This is such a problem. Many people spend their lives working jobs that do not make drinking water or trips to the bathroom easy. So they learn to ignore thirst cues.

It’s not just about water. It’s about the minerals the body needs in order to be able to use the water properly at cellular level. And that doesn’t mean crap ‘electrolyte’ drinks, it means getting lots of minerals from decent whole food. Failing that, taking a good electrolyte supplement. Without enough minerals the water just goes mostly straight through. Getting enough potassium from veg & fruit, juices, smoothies is important as potassium is a fluid balancer in the body. It helps the cells hydrate properly & that means they can cleanse themselves far more effectively, & the body can detox far better. That’s one of the reasons why Dr. Montgomery’s raw protocol works so well. It gives the body the tools to cleanse & heal far more effectively. One way I know when my cells are dehydrated is when my finger pads are thin & wrinkly. When my cells are hydrated my finger pads are plump & firm. Another clue that my cells are hydrated & I’m getting enough potassium is that I don’t need to pee at night, well, far less often.

As a 72 year old fairly active guy I make sure I drink 3 quarts of water EVERY single day. I feel better, it aids digestion, also helps maintain my weight so I don't mistake thirst for hunger. Great topic!

At times, I drink a lot of water, then my life takes a turn otherwise (more stress, new schedule, etc) and I don't focus on that need so much. During these times, my bp is markedly higher. I keep going in these cycles, even when I know what will happen 😑

The three pillars of health are water, sleep, and nutrition. You can not survive without all three. Dehydration is rampant in the U.S. Dehydration can mimic so many diseases that you may spend days in the hospital being tested before the doctors figure out that you are merely dehydrated. There are plenty of people still paying down huge hospital bills because of simple dehydration.

Dr. Montgomery, as a registered nurse, I love to learn. My background is in hospice and palliative care. Under normal circumstances, we discourage IV fluids because, based on experience as well as peer-reviewed studies, if there's artificial hydration in the last month of life, not only is there a risk for fluid overload because the heart is trying to shut down, but also the potential the person will linger during the dying process because the body needs to get the excess fluids out of the system. *** If I may ask you to learn from you, what would be some key observational areas that a nurse can do onsite (not in a hospital setting) to rule out the person is not yet within the < 30-day mark from death but is simply dehydrated such that they appear to be dying? Thank you.

There are no specific tests to determine the potential 30-day prognosis of a given patient. The best thing to do is to define the objectives of everyone involved. If the objectives are to give the patient every chance to live, then you should proceed accordingly.
