Having a shower stool when you don't have a ledge for your tub (I think those freestanding tubs are really silly and a trend that will die) is actually handy. I also think paying $150 for a nice teak stool when you don't have a built in bench for your shower (and most showers really shouldn't have them because they take up a lot of space, drive up the cost of construction and allow water to pool) is handy for shaving legs or for keeping some of your products on there.
@thornyback Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. The freestanding tubs next to a wall are the biggest dirt-trap I've seen in my life and to top it off there is no place to put your stuff like towel, glass of wine, book, soap etc. They look very pretty but they are about as impractical as tubs come. Give me a beautiful built-in with a shelf and minimal cleaning.

After having major abdominal surgery this past spring (I'm recovering well, thank you), I needed a shower stool in order to wash myself. I bought a very basic medical stool, not at all attractive but sturdy, waterproof and cheap. Turns out, I love having it, even though I no longer need it. Sitting while shaving legs is wonderful. I can put it next to the tub to hold a few things when I take a bath. If I'm tired, I can use it for a night time shower. Saying that, not just any stool will work. It needs to be 100% waterproof, have non-slip feet, and not give you splinters if you sit on it. Wood, even teak, won't stand up well to constant wetting and drying out - it will look bad (and raise splinters) well before it fails completely. My humble medical stool won't do any of these.

The only one I somewhat disagree with is the accent wall. Obviously, it looks tacky if it's some cheesy color like fuchsia or lime green, but I think if you choose a beautiful sophisticated shade that works with your overall color scheme, it can visually pull things together and look quite good. I will defend my accent wall to the death! I have an open concept living/dining room that's one long rectangle. One end of the rectangle is essentially dead space due to the placement of the entrance to the kitchen. I can only put storage pieces there. Painting the wall a darker color visually foreshortens the room and helps integrate the dead space with the rest of the room.

I have an unintentional accent wall in one bedroom. I repainted and barely had enough paint to do 3 walls in the room, so I left the darker color on the window wall alone. I was trying to refresh the room without spending money, using paints I already had. I'm wondering if I just painted the "accent wall" a lighter color, so it wouldn't be such a big contrast, maybe that would make it look better.

An accent wall uses contrast to solve a design problem. KZbin decorators give a lot of bad advice and Nick is no acceptation to that rule. @@lithopheliax61x5 While I agree that wood is not the best material of choice (I'd go for a sturdy plastic that's actually feasible to clean), a mere nook on the wall doesn't cut it for shaving legs. I agree, agree, agree with you on this. When I look at someon'es design in a room I think 1) is it really functional 2) how difficult is it to clean and maintain. All the vignettes (stools w/stuff on them in the bathrooms, cutesies on shelves especially in the bath & kitchen, around the sink getting water splashes, and stuff next to the cooktops getting greasy & dusty) I see require so much dusting and cleaning that the cuteness just isn't enough. And they ARE cute! 1 & 2 eliminate about 90% of what I see designers doing. I do love the look of the wood piece accent walls, but I would paint them the same color as the room (the texture is enough) and be aware that any line that is not vertical will be a dust collecter. That is A LOT of dusting to be done! I guess you can tell I don't have a maid LOL! Thanks again for your video, Nick!

You are so right about the excessive pillows. How are you supposed to sit on a sofa when there are six pillows and no place for you to actually sit? I used to have lots of pillows on my bed also - now I have the pillows we sleep on covered by two pillow shams each. All white - lovely to me. Love your videos😀

Love your channel, Nick! I need about 6 feather pillows to feel comfortable. I love making my bed a nest and propping myself up while reading. I even carry my down pillows from my bed to my sofa to watch tv. I also am guilty of a mini lamp in my kitchen with a 15w soft bulb but I do love to have it on at night like a nightlight. I am glad that you were NOT talking about accessibility stools and chairs in the bathroom. That is the one thing on my wish list to get, but, being in a condo, we have a couple of special assessments coming up, so those come first. Tie between electrician +Dishwasher/ shower seat for next in importance. I agree that smaller spaces are not conducive to curved furniture or oversized lighting. As for pillows, there are some medical conditions where a person literally needs 20 pillows on the bed, as the chronic pain can move to different places on the body, and there's a pillow(s) for each spot the pain sits.

So true on the pillow issue on the bed. I’ve never been one to have more than two pillows or three on my bed, but some people I mean you can’t even see the bed the cover the entire bed definitely takes about an hour to take them off.

I definitely understand the point of misplaced or wacky painted or textured accent walls. But they're certainly useful in the right set up. And they work a lot better if they're integrated into the color scheme. Like a warm natured toned room and your beige walls and dark wood furniture were accented by a sage green accent wall.

i have a curved sofa in my apartment and you are so right about everything you said! you lose so much space on the curves and the curves make some parts of the sofa less comfortable to sit on. and it is impossible to nap on (but i'm not much of a napper). it's still gorgeous to me as i really love the art deco vibe of it but i wish i had thought of these pros and cons before going in on it years ago. great video as always.

Love the anti influence! 😄❤️ And I got to add.. As a painter I applaud this approach to ✨The Accent Wall✨. 😁 If you have a lot of paintings, wall decor, etc (and you're not a maximalist) I usually don't recommend an accent wall. If you wallpaper an accent wall; consider picking a color from that wallpaper for the rest of the walls. And if you'd rather paint, complementary colors usually look amazing. If you're not super bold with color it still works very muted (same color but with "more white", if using the NSC chart). Here in Sweden we usually wallpaper everything, so that's my personal preference, but color _can_ look so good! It's worth putting a little time and love into and not just "lime green, so they'll think you're interesting". 😂👌🏻

I'm gonna come out in defense of accent walls in specific situations, as long as they're not random. Let's say you live in the subtropics (like me) and apartments are...maybe not what Americans are used to, and despite your best efforts one might get 'wall cancer' (when the paint bubbles and flakes due to humidity, especially if you are trying to be environmentally friendly and not using an a/c that much). It's easier to fix up and repaint a white wall, but getting more paint for an accent wall...well, you'd better hope they still make the same color or that you saved the info for that color (in our case, the name was not enough as Nippon Paint had changed all the names!) So you do one wall, because you can maintain that, but not every wall. Or let's say you rent and you can imagine repainting one wall when you move out but would prefer not to repaint every wall. Not everyone owns, but that doesn't necessarily mean they want all white, if they can get permission to do something to a single wall. The same is true for wallpaper, even peel and stick. If you're renting, it's a lot easier to tear down one wall of peel-n-stick but not a lot of fun to take it down on every wall (and then wash them to remove any lingering adhesive or repaint areas where the adhesive took off paint). As long as your colored wall is your focal point wall, I really don't see a problem with this. I guess it's dated, but if you like it, who cares? I don't care for all the weird extra molding though. It looks like more skinny surfaces to have to dust. I'll also defend stools if they're used for an actual purpose, e.g. next to the bath as a place to put a glass of water or tea, or burn a nice candle, or keep your face mask for when you're ready to put it on. Or if it's in the shower, it can help if you don't have a product shelf -- not everyone has tile that those suction cups will stick to and plastic storage looks cheap -- and some people use them to shave legs. Ever tried shaving your legs in the shower without something to hoist the leg you're working on up? It's a massive pain, especially if you have product in your hair or want to keep your hair dry (not everyone washes hair, or should wash hair, every day -- but leg shaving without a stool or other apparatus is a great way to get wet hair).

Stools are pretty much non-negotiable for Japanese bath rooms (as in the room which is the bath/shower), as in Japan, people often wash while sitting before getting into the tub. I've got one. It's also very useful for shaving legs or if I'm just really, really tired and want to sit during a shower. Which is definitely a thing as I get older and it has been a long day.

I’ve lived in Japan for 15 years and do not have a stool in my bath/shower room. I don’t feel a need to sit down while showering, nor do I want something else to have to scrub!

@@KnittyElf Sure, and I've been here 16. There are plenty of things I do "the American way," but my comment was referencing the cultural view as a whole. There's a reason why if you go to Nitori or Cainz or whatever, they have an entire section of bathroom stools.

@@nippolitica I would argue they’re not as “non-negotiable” here as you say, though. Maybe it’s because I live in Tokyo, but no one whose apartment I’ve been to has a stool in their shower, and my husband has also never expressed interest in buying one either, thankfully. My in-laws in the countryside do have one, though.

@@KnittyElf That's a fair nuance. I lived in Tokyo for two years, but have mostly lived in suburban or rural areas. I currently live in a machi a few hours commute from Tokyo. Okay, I'll amend. "As always, Tokyo is an exception." I really do recommend that stool when your knees start to go as mine finally have. Unless you like sitting directly on the floor of the shower or shaving in the bathtub (not my thing).

I like Nick Lewis because he isn't in the business of pushing trends for their own sake. As far as I know, the vast majority of rooms are rectangular LOL. And when it comes to influencers and what we "need," we don't "need" any of it. Most trends are as much determined by what manufacturers and stores want to sell as by consumers. Trends are all about endless consumption, whether it is in furniture or clothes styles. Aesthetics and practicality, though, are timeless and equal good design. If you like something that works well in your home and you can afford it, buy it; if not, don't. Influencers are too often nothing more than pushers of their own tastes.
