One thing that I would really love to go away is this trend (that has been happening for a while) of using books merely for decor -- especially if they have stuff on top of them. I'm not taking all that stuff from there just to open a coffee table book! Also, what if water from vases seep into books?

Same! I often have a colour I really want but you get the worry that doing all four walls in it would be too dark - so having one accent wall and the others in a close-to-white colour is perfect! I've never done all the other walls white though, that's a bit jarring - off-white in a tint close to the accent is the way to go :)

I agree. I don't see a problem with accent walls, unless it's a colour I don't like, but that's just a personal preference - has nothing to do with the style itself. My house is somewhat open concept and one room flows into another. It can look very bland when painted all one colour, so I find if one wall has a different colour, it breaks the monotony. I don't think of it as dated, it's just a design choice that makes sense in some instances.

I don’t think accent walls are bad-I think they’re great when done well. I’m a big fan of color and texture in a space. I think they can add dimensionality into a room, and there are so many ways to make accent walls, from very expensive to very affordable. I think the problem with accent walls when everyone chooses to do the exact same thing as everyone else.

Color and texture is great! Only committing to one wall makes it very jarring and unbalanced, heavy on one side. If you're gonna Limewash, or wainscot, or paint, do it for all the walls!

I will defend my accent wall to the death! I have an open concept living/dining room that's one long rectangle. One end of the rectangle is essentially dead space due to the placement of the entrance to the kitchen. I can only put storage pieces there. Painting the wall a darker color visually foreshortens the room and helps integrate the dead space with the rest of the room.
@channamasala1

@@12345678abracadabra Not everyone owns, and it's easier to put back a rented space as it was if you just did one wall. It *can* make a space look unbalanced, but I don't agree it *necessarily* does so.

I have an unintentional accent wall in one bedroom. I repainted and barely had enough paint to do 3 walls in the room, so I left the darker color on the window wall alone. I was trying to refresh the room without spending money, using paints I already had. I'm wondering if I just painted the "accent wall" a lighter color, so it wouldn't be such a big contrast, maybe that would make it look better.

Totally and you should decorate how you want to decorate. If you are a person who wants to change to follow every trend and have your home look like every influencer home on here, go for it. If you dont care about "dated" or "trends" and love your fuschia accent wall, keep it! Your home should be filled with things you love, not what other people love or tell you that you should love or hate.

Having a shower stool when you don't have a ledge for your tub (I think those freestanding tubs are really silly and a trend that will die) is actually handy. I also think paying $150 for a nice teak stool when you don't have a built in bench for your shower (and most showers really shouldn't have them because they take up a lot of space, drive up the cost of construction and allow water to pool) is handy for shaving legs or for keeping some of your products on there.
@thornyback
@thornyback Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. The freestanding tubs next to a wall are the biggest dirt-trap I've seen in my life and to top it off there is no place to put your stuff like towel, glass of wine, book, soap etc. They look very pretty but they are about as impractical as tubs come. Give me a beautiful built-in with a shelf and minimal cleaning.

After having major abdominal surgery this past spring (I'm recovering well, thank you), I needed a shower stool in order to wash myself. I bought a very basic medical stool, not at all attractive but sturdy, waterproof and cheap. Turns out, I love having it, even though I no longer need it. Sitting while shaving legs is wonderful. I can put it next to the tub to hold a few things when I take a bath. If I'm tired, I can use it for a night time shower. Saying that, not just any stool will work. It needs to be 100% waterproof, have non-slip feet, and not give you splinters if you sit on it. Wood, even teak, won't stand up well to constant wetting and drying out - it will look bad (and raise splinters) well before it fails completely. My humble medical stool won't do any of these.

So unpopular opinion - but I like a well done accent wall. Sometimes I think they look really good, and can add to the space. All white walls can get boring. Same with all green walls, or all blue walls. Painting your room black can get too dark, but sometimes painting just a piece of the room works.
@pippadawg7037

An accent wall uses contrast to solve a design problem. KZbin decorators give a lot of bad advice and Nick is no acceptation to that rule. He tells his audience they don't "need" an accent wall and he has never seen their space. He doesn't know. Also like most decorators of no particular fame or fortune, he is a one trick pony. He can give you his look and nothing else. So you had better like his apartment a lot. I don't. There is nothing special about it.

The only one I somewhat disagree with is the accent wall. Obviously, it looks tacky if it's some cheesy color like fuchsia or lime green, but I think if you choose a beautiful sophisticated shade that works with your overall color scheme, it can visually pull things together and look quite good. @@lithopheliax61x5 While I agree that wood is not the best material of choice (I'd go for a sturdy plastic that's actually feasible to clean), a mere nook on the wall doesn't cut it for shaving legs. The height is usually wrong, you'd have other objects in there, and it eliminates the possibility of seating (which some people might need for a number of reasons). If you like to read in the bath, or enjoy a glass of wine or champagne - as many of us do - then those stools make an awfully useful side-table. Somewhere to set down your glass or your book. Or place a candle if you want a more restful (or perhaps romantic) vibe. So I would say they're very definitely practical. Especially if you have a bathroom (like mine) where there are no window ledges or other surfaces to place something within reach. Sure, you can have one of those tray-tables that straddles the bath. But to me they're a more cumbersome piece of clutter than a stool/table, in that they get in the way of you actually having a bath. And if your book or glass is knocked and tips, then it's in the water, rather than on the floor. And a wet book is no fun.

Would you call your navy wall in the background an accent wall? Why or why not? I have an accent wall in my living room, i live in an open mcm home, and it's hard to know where to start and stop with paint when you want to one room to have a different wall color. I think some style homes can handle an accent wall. MCM design often features an accent wall. Totally agree with the aggressive wall moldings though.

Bathroom stools, you don't need them unless you need them. They are pretty useful if you don't have a ledge to help reach your legs and feet for cleaning, cutting nails or shaving.

I agree except for the stool in the bathroom. I use it to sit on when bathing the kids, I use it as an end table to set things on when taking a bath, I use it as a stepping stool if I need to reach higher, I use it for many things. Stools are useful

I agree, agree, agree with you on this. When I look at someon'es design in a room I think 1) is it really functional 2) how difficult is it to clean and maintain. All the vignettes (stools w/stuff on them in the bathrooms, cutesies on shelves especially in the bath & kitchen, around the sink getting water splashes, and stuff next to the cooktops getting greasy & dusty) I see require so much dusting and cleaning that the cuteness just isn't enough. And they ARE cute! 1 & 2 eliminate about 90% of what I see designers doing. I do love the look of the wood piece accent walls, but I would paint them the same color as the room (the texture is enough) and be aware that any line that is not vertical will be a dust collecter. That is A LOT of dusting to be done! I guess you can tell I don't have a maid LOL! Thanks again for your video, Nick!

…. a milking stool, and you live in the suburbs…. You are relieving so many of us from pressurized consumption. Looking at Jackie Kennedy’s summer houses. There is a smaller one, she and Jack bought at Hyannis Port in the fifties. The living room has a sofa, a smallish coffee table, super low chairs with super low tables, big pillow on the floor. So understated. A message is also that she never changed things. If an upholstery wore out, she reupholstered with the same fabric. Somehow, I love that.

I love how you say you don't need this or that, but it you love it and have space then go for it. So many designers give the impression you need to do this or that and stick with trends, so it's a breath of fresh air to hear a professional say "if you love it, go for it" whole also not pressuring anyone to feel like they are lacking if they don't want something

Our bedrooms have accent walls and that hue is repeated in the space for cohesion. The 4 bedrooms have their own colour, 3 primary and one secondary. The trick is in the degree of saturation and in our home the colours are deep rather than bright. I enjoy colour and the bedroom isn't a public space like the loungeroom. So in a nutshell, no one needs an accent wall but l like them 🙂

ok yes, an accent wall isnt totally necessary. no visual design element is necessary. but accent walls arent bad. you have one behind you, as well. sometimes having the whole room one color can feel overwhelming or boring depending on the color. maybe someone doesnt want every wall burnt cienna but they still want to add some warmth. its a nice way to create dimension or texture to an otherwise flat surface. with any trend, dont feel like you need to hop on the train. do things because you think it works for you and its what you like

Keep in mind, even though he’s saying accent walls can be unnecessary, he’s not saying they’re bad. Not everything on the internet will apply to everyone. He’s just trying to help people not get too involved with trends and constantly make unnecessary changes to their home. He even has a navy wall in his background to separate the dining area/ hallway from the rest of the space which can be helpful in an open concept. He’s simply saying that you shouldn’t do it if it doesn’t serve a design purpose.

Because I respect you, I take all of this advice as "don't feel you have to do this just because it's a trend - do what works for you." As a disabled person who needs a shower stool and 9 pillows to get her body comfortable at night, imma do what I gotta do :P My husband has always had an issue with decor for decor's sake. I'm not talking about hanging pictures, but things like a stack of books and vases, "guest" soaps, bowls of balls, etc. A bathroom seat is a useful thing, an uncomfortable tool piled with stuff you don't need in a bathroom is ridiculous.

Some of these I do, some I don’t! 1) stool in the bathroom - mine is from IMEA and is plastic. I use it to prop my feet up when I’m on the toilet, to sit on when shaving my legs or to put stuff on that doesn’t have a space in the bathroom but shouldn’t be on the floor. 2) pillows on beds and sofas - my bed has four pillows of various firmness. Two are great when I side sleep. Two are great for back sleeping. I have some others that are mainly for when I’m sat in the floor in my bedroom. They usually live on my bed but I don’t use them on the bed 3) accent wall - I’m waiting for another half a year before I do my accent wall. It’ll be a wallpaper scene with birds and colour. But then again I’ll also be painting the white walls the same colour as the main colour of the wallpaper when I get round to it.

I have just redecorated an accent wall with wallpaper ,for the simple reason that I fell in love with a rather dark and dramatic paper that would overwhelm my small Livingroom if used on all 4 walls ,but looks (imo) pretty stunning as a backdrop for a couple of bookcases and a desk .I'm just going to go ahead and say that the oversized lighting looks rather as if the mother ship is coming in for a landing on the dining table .They really do give me close encounter vibes .

I needed a shower stool when I developed cardiac and respiratory issues and couldn't stand up in the shower. Sitting on the floor in the shower isn't fun and life is already hard enough when you're sick. I cried, many times, because I felt so pathetic on the floor in the shower. I still need it to a certain extent (standing + hot water = faint. Faint + tiles = head injury), but I really love sitting in the shower.

We are shower people more than bath people, so we didnt mind that the free standing tub is less practical, hence the stool ; We style the stool as a plant stand, and for the rare occasion we actually use the bath, the stool holds our soap. 2nd, the teak stool is also useful as a ledge for shaving .somethere to rest the foot, when the shower doesnt have other kind of built in seat of ledge 🤷‍♀️

I definitely understand the point of misplaced or wacky painted or textured accent walls. But they're certainly useful in the right set up. And they work a lot better if they're integrated into the color scheme. Like a warm natured toned room and your beige walls and dark wood furniture were accented by a sage green accent wall.
