My view: if you’re buying designer goods, they should be of high quality. Many brands charge high prices but use low quality materials or sweatshop labor (see Dior). Another pet peeve of mine is the brand name/logo being all over the bag. I’m not a billboard!!!
@davidpachecogarcia
@davidpachecogarcia 5 ай бұрын
Designer items are more about giving you something that is unique or straying away from the more regular items. This doesn’t equate to high quality…unless the designer has focused on that aspect to design around. The LV canvas they use in a lot of their bags was created to withstand the elements better than leather. However, today, I’m pretty sure they’ve cheapened on the cotton quality which is why it feels so flimsy now. This is a bother conversation on how the owner of LV is trying to make even more profits off of the many brands they own.

"the brand name/logo being all over the bag" One thing i noticed long ago the 'cheaper' the item, the more branding that is on the item. The most expensive items have practically no branding on them. The items with brand name/logo all over them are for insecure people.

Designer jewelry always seems like an extra scam because a local jeweler will make you high quality pieces (from high quality, pure metals, real gem stones, whatever else) for a fraction of the cost.

And they're not even custom to you. None of the clothes or jewelry are. The fact that they are ready made and you can pick them up in the store/online. Besides the champagne and snooty experience from the shop employees, what high value/high quality item are they actually selling you? Whenever my peers or acquaintances says oh but you're purchasing high quality goods...I always looked at them and said, no you're not. You're buying the name and aesthetic lifestyle that it brings.

DO NOT buy jewelry from brands unless that’s what they focused and started their brand in. Most likely they’re just trying to expand their product range and they’re def not experts in that field. Designer is not custom. With designer you are buying into their “world” or their idea of what fashion should be.

I had this sad experience where I met a wealthy guy, and he was basically handed everything to him and given a trust fund, but his dad never loved him at all. I saw him struggling to pick between 2 luxury watch brands that are basically worth a large rent payment. He claimed that his dad could afford tons of Ferraris, so he wanted to get him something that would be special. The reality that I saw was that he was getting him an empty gift that would still not win his dad's love, but it's all he knew what to do.

Funny enough, selling my entire bank and buying an expensive cosmetic item on RuneScape when I was a middle schooler de-influenced me from status symbols. Instant gratification is a HUGE factor, especially if you have impulse control/dopamine issues. It takes constant effort to curb the desire to pick something up because it feels so good to "win" (yes, I've got severe ADHD), but a trick that I've implemented is to add goods to my cart (or saving to a wish lift), or to walk around a shop with whatever it is I'm mulling over purchasing for at least 20 minutes. More often than not, I end up abandoning the item.

A few things I'll add as a watch collector who has been into the hobby for most of my life: it's a common misconception that watch collecting is a rich man's hobby. Sure, there are those seven-or-eight-figure watches you’ll see on the wrists of celebrities or members of the Saudi Arabian royal family, but the reality is that 90% of collectors are in it for reasons beyond just brand names or impressing others. To say that watches are purely for flexing is a bit of a near sighted judgement because honestly, in any room you walk into, maybe 1 in 100 people will ever notice your watch. Most other collectors like myself I know are desk jockeys who work 9-5, and we always put a lot of thought into each purchase because these things cost a lot of money! Really, there's different reasons for everyone, but for me, watches are the perfect blend of mechanical engineering and art. It feels like wearing a piece of art and history on my wrist rather than just jewelry. Plus, there's the added bonus that these can be liquidated anytime and anywhere in the world if you need to.

Exactly, I think like everything if you aren’t buying it for yourself and yourself only the purchase is flawed. I always strike up conversations when I spot somebody with an interesting watch and it’s becoming increasingly a thing that they have no clue what they are wearing/go straight in with the price! Just yesterday I was in the pub and pointed out a guys seamaster, mentioned it to him and the first thing he said was how much it cost him.. why does that matter? I cannot fathom spending 6k on an item you have zero interest in.

I have to carry my items around well use a beautifully crafted piece made from a heritage brand with a long history in leather production, hand stitching, vegetable dying etc. the average person also can't identify these bags that aren't the logomania ones. I’m a designer and I love designer items because they offer something you can’t get anywhere else. I appreciate the detailing or use of higher quality materials. With that being said majority of the items that are labeled “designer” or “luxury” do not fall into this category. Especially at most malls you can drive to in the USA. The horror to see the quality and faulty stitching at Gucci or LV pieces and they’re charging several hundreds or thousands for subpar products that frankly have not been innovated in decades!!! ☠️☠️☠️ Robbery !I also do not follow any fashion influencer because they’re peddling mediocrity when it comes to buying products. They don’t criticize these bad business practices or products. Also, I never buy anything to try to impress someone. I’m the one trying to impress myself. Which sadly for my designer sensibilities but great for my wallet is def lacking with so much overpriced trash being put out at so many brands.

Oh, finally someone mentioned it. Those mini bags are so silly because the profit margins are way, way higher. I don't understand it. One time, I bought a wallet-I think it was in 2011, though I don't remember for sure. It was made of real leather, but it was brandless. I think I paid $20 for it. I only replaced that wallet because I got bored; I used it for almost seven or eight years, and it was still in pristine condition. It was still amazing. The leather had a pattern similar to Bottega Veneta, but it wasn't a fake-it just had a similar style without any branding. I'm also using for around 4 years a drawstring bag that I paid $7.99 for, and I basically wear it every day. The bag is fine-it's made of thick fabric from Timberland, which I bought at TK Maxx. It's so practical and convenient. I just don't understand how someone can justify spending $2,000 or $3,000 on a small piece of leather. It's insane how powerful marketing can be.

I can buy a submariner today for 10-12k , wear it daily for 50 years and sell it for the equivalent 7-8k is today. So 5k divided by 18262 is 0,28$ per day. When I visited Florence, we toured the Peruzzi leather goods company. They showed us how things were made, and our tour group got a discount on purchases. I bought a cute small fuchsia purse, very pretty, but I should have known how impractical it is. I’m so not an itty bitty purse person; I usually take the bus, so I need to bring with me whatever I need while I’m out like a water bottle, my phone, a crossword puzzle, some compact shopping bags, etc. The mini bag works for clubbing, but.. oh yeah, I don’t really club 😂 So it’s a bit of a regret, although I don’t think it was too expensive (wish I remembered just how much, but it wouldn’t have been much over $100 I hope). They did have some beautiful silk scarves sold by outdoor vendors, very reasonably priced, wonderful quality, great choice for gifts

@@dalyxia ok the CPUs and PC parts in general area actually an awesome example (including PC games): I was replacing some parts of my old pc recently and I was looking at the AMD 5XXX lineup. I tried to decide between the 5700 and the 5800(xd) and used youtube comparisons and benchmarks to make my decision. Ultimately I went for the 5700 because it consumes less power and I don't play AAA games and the minor bump in performance didn't justify (for me at least) the much higher price. meanwhile I have a colleague who buys top of the line cpus because he wants those parts to last at least 3 years which is insane to me. PC parts are hands down a money sink for men. And the justification for those are the newest PC games. Thank god I don't play demanding games 😂

Let's run the numbers. An entry level Rolex costs $6,400 at minimum. Let's assume you buy a new Apple watch every 5 year, because that's the updates support of the Apple Watch (and you can use it for longer, just because it no longer receives updates, that doesn't mean it stops working). You can buy 16 apple watchs in 80 years, at 400$ each for the price of one single Rolex (the cheapest).

I'm so minimal (I guess) that I mostly buy from Lidl or second hand from charity shops or Vinted (a few times a year), and I declutter often, since I get anxiety from clutter. I donate and save some of my salary each month, which I wouldn't be able to do if I spend it on things I'll shove in my wardrobe. I'm surprised that people would spend so much money on needless stuff that they don't need. I hope the trends change to minimal and sustainable living instead of endless consumerism .

The thing with watches, particularly Rolex, is after eating cheesecake for 8 years you’d have nothing, but if you had the Rolex you’d be able to sell it, potentially for a profit. The other part of watches is some people like them even though we don’t need them for time or to be flashy. Some people wear $300 Seiko or $500 micro brands or a $6k Omega that was purchased grey market for $4k and gifted to them and nobody they interact with knows a thing about watches and they probably assume it’s not expensive.

Watch guy checking in and I just wanna say my take: she’s not wrong. Watches aren’t necessary for life. But to be fair, there are a lot of cheaper options that are just as historical. G Shocks come to mind. Every watch guy loves a G Shock and they can be had for $50 more or less and they are tough as nails. Seiko is another brand that comes to mind. That’s the brand you go with to troll Rolex lovers and remind them of the cheap Japanese brand that nearly sank the wealthy Swiss brands with their cheaper and more accurate watches. If you want a swiss brand for one less zero, go with Tissot. I have a Tissot Le Locle that I got for sub $500 and it’s great. To summarize, all things are great options if you want a watch for cheap but like art, they aren’t necessary for living. You can go without them

I wanted to add something about the Van Cleef bracelet. It is solid gold, so part of the price can be justified. However, if we look at the typical grams of 18k gold in each bracelet, the Van Cleef bracelet has 11.05 grams, priced at $10,000, which equates to approximately $905 per gram. In comparison, reputable stores on Etsy offer 18k solid gold bracelets for $1,177 with 9 grams of gold, equating to approximately $131 per gram. This means the Van Cleef bracelet is about 592% more expensive per gram than the Etsy alternative. I rather put that money in ETFs.

Definitely not worth it, however cute they are.Also most people addicted to their phones keep them in their hands, not in their bags, so a bag can be tiny. And may I add that I like it when you show what kind of houses you can buy for the price of one watch. I think it illustrates perfectly how ridiculous the luxury items are. One thing that must be mentioned also is the opportunities you lose when you spend your money that way: you can pursue a higher education, afford the living costs to do an unpaid/badly paid internship that will help your career, travel etc.Oh, and yes to part 2 of this video (and generally yes to video from you!)

I think something as well for me is that the people who buy these things buy A LOT of it. I can absolutely understand someone saving up and buying a luxury handbag or scarf, or whatever because they've loved it for years and plan to use it for the rest of their lives. That special bag you bring out for holidays or date nights or something could be a really special thing that you maybe even think to pass down one day. BUT buying a whole collection of them? and just piling them in your closet is insane. Watches, you literally wear one at a time. why do you need 50.

A few things on the Rolex thing: Rolex prices are coming down but resale prices are still really high. Second, people will defend the purchase as an heirloom to pass down. This is more likely than things like the bag. However, to keep the watches running properly will also cost several thousand over the lifetime of the piece, so the real cost is higher

While I agree with most of your points, the watch one is where it's just a case of "out of your tax bracket of understanding". Especially when talking about the Patek. And no, I'm not a dude trying to justify his spending habits. I'm a girl from a family/background where collecting such watches is pretty common. Nobody is buying those to 'signal wealth', because they're basically out of reach for anyone who isn't already good with / has a lot of money. I get a lot of comments when I wear a Rolex, because it's so well-known. I get zero comments when I wear a Patek, except by others who are wealthy and know how to spot them. At that level, it's silly to use a compounding interest calculator to justify it as a "silly expense". 30 years of 7%? My mum's Jaeger went from 90k to 170k in a year. A Patek a friend bought for 800k went to 2m in 2 years.
