**Corrections for this video** *Please Read* I said two things in the video which were incorrect. One was just a brain fart and the other was pure ignorance. 1. The 42RE does NOT have 4 gears plus overdrive. It has 3 plus overdrive. I have been working on the 545RFE so much lately that I described the wrong transmission to you all. This error does not change how I feel about the 42RE. 2. No Wrangler ever had the 3.7L engine. The JK/JKU had the 3.8L. The buddy in that story always called his the 3.7L and we would commiserate together on how much we hated our engines without ever realizing he was mislabeling his. I never questioned it as my Jeeps of similar year had the 3.7L. It made sense at the time. This does not change in any way how I feel about the 3.7L, it just gives me another Jeep engine to hate as well.. the 3.8L pushrod POS. As always, I apologize for these error and thank those who pointed them out to me. I hope you are able to see past these mistakes and enjoyed the video anyway. Thanks for watching!

Hey now.... The 3.8 may not be a high power engine. But They are one of the most reliable american v6 pushrod engines ever made. GM never had a V6 pushrod engine that dependable. As most of theirs suffered from intake manifold gasket failures. The 3.8 does 300k+ miles no problem. The trans they pair with them on the other hand.... The 3.7 was a Meh Engine for sure. Suffered from reliability problems too. The 4.7l was a much better engine. The 3.7L's also got the mercedes transmission, and not the better 545RFE. IMO part of the reason why they feel sluggish and have low toe rating. My WK with the 4.7 has over 200k miles running strong. The 08+ 4.7l with the new heads had awesome power and decent mpg. Was a solid alt to the Hemi in those years. 4.7's are super easy to work on too. While the AW4 was a great transmission. I really wished the 4.0 got a 545RFE with the JK's. That would have been awesome. Totally would have taken that over a AW4 option. Sadly we got the 42re.

@@Miohunter444 I definitely forsee a future frame change. The sillys at Chrysler foresaw they should galvanise the body so it will be rust resistive. But they thought nothing of doing anything preventative to the ladder frame, short of a quick layer of paint. But I have planned ahead. I already know where I am getting the frame. It will be thicker and galvanised. When the eventuality of frame failure does happen, and sadly it will, it will not end our long relationship. Windi will get her frame replaced. I owe it to her. As for now, I sand, prime, and paint the frame every year in spring and repaint it in late autumn. It has done a good job of keeping the rust fairies at bay. But it will only slow the inevitable down.

Dana 44a also known as the 44HD is actually a very good axle even though the center section is aluminum. With a pumpkin skid and truss kit you've got an axle stronger and lighter than a standard Dana 44. The only real downside to the 44a is the lack of support with lockers. If you have the Varilock diff in it and matching Varilock front axle and diff then you've got gold as these are extremely effective progressive lockers with proper fluid. If you have the open diff version then your only real option is a lunch box style locker which is also very well available.

I would guess they got 44s because they have poor infrastructure and they would be used more as utility vehicles rather than family haulers. Plus you need strength, especially when you might have little money or trained workers to fix your car. This is why simple, brick like cars are still very popular in countries that demand work horses. Rangers, Bare bones Land Cruisers/Land Rovers, small pickups etc.

Mopar is weird - the 42 RE is mechanically the successor to the older Torqueflite 904. The transmission was used behind slant sixes. So, when they used slants in dodge trucks and taxi’s, the auto option was a Torqueflite 727 using a factory adapterplate. WHY did they just not use a 46RE, or rather RH with bellhousing to match the 4 Litre?
@s3vR3x

slight correction: the 42re is a 4 speed only. no 2 second gears. It's actually a 3 speed torqueflight A500 with a 4th gear over drive unit bolted on the back. On dana 44s they did the center out of aluminum for two reasons. 1) no corrosion 2) acts like a heat sync keeping the fluid & your ring gear cooler while towing. I agree with you on the fact that the 4.0 wasn’t designed for the Cherokee, but as long as all your cooling components work, you will be fine. I have done some off-roading mine and I have done a lot of sitting still idling and revving it up. As long as you understand it’s limit you will be totally fine. Only once have I slightly over heated it, and even then it only got hot enough that it ejected some coolant all over the place but the thermometer said that it was only just above 210 degrees the whole time. Plus, I have fixed that problem by making it so that I can turn the e-fan on no matter what so it is always cooling the engine. Watch that video if you want to. Thanks for the vid, I loved it!

As an owner of an 04 WJ, I must say I got unlucky to have the 42RE, Dana 30/35C combination, Quadra-Trac II etc etc. I like the 4 liter don’t get me wrong, but if I’m already rolling and I need to really get on it and pick up speed, it just doesn’t have the beans. I’m on my fourth 42RE. Every time they break, it’s due to the torque converter welding itself together or 2nd gear exploding and shooting bits of gear out the oil pan. As I type this, the fourth one in it now has been rebuilt once with a new torque converter that welded itself tighter. And I by no means go off-roading with it as it’s my daily driver. The transfer case I believe got hot at one point and therefore is always sending power to both driveshafts regardless if it senses speed difference between front and rear. I take the front driveshaft out during warm months and my fuel mileage goes up to 16-17 city. The diff on the D30 makes ungodly noise, the CV joints at the hubs bind up if I have to turn sharp. The D35C blows axle seals left and right. And I do my damndest to service everything on a regular basis, but alas it makes no difference. I will eventually do a 4.7/545RFE swap and throw a select-trac in as well (as I grew to love the trans in the 5.7 WK I had). I would do a complete regear of both axles and chromoly axle shafts up front to eliminate the CV joints, but is it even worth trying to beef up a D30? I love my WJ and I could never compel myself to let anyone else have her, nor do I plan to make it a MOAB rated rig, but sure cannot afford to keep replacing these same parts on a regular basis. Oh well, over the next year or so as funds allow, I’ll rectify these problems and she’ll be good as new.

I bought my 1990 YJ new, my 1997 TJ Sport new, my 2012 Sahara JKU new also. But I could never bring myself to pay for the JL new. I would be paying for forced design flaws I do not want. Once it has been around and I figure a permanent way to disable the design flaw disguised as a feature, I may get a JL. But not anytime soon. There is no way an engine that is turned off, goes to zero oil pressure, and then gets turned back on again, over and over, is going to last as long as an engine that is allowed to idle and maintain proper oil pressure and operating temperate.

Hey, thanks Doug! You basically answered my questions about the other remaining two-letter model codes I was wondering about from the last Jeep Insult Video! I've owned an XJ with the 2.8L V6. Yeah, it's not fast at ALL, but mine was not as bad as everyone seems to say. It never ran right from the day I got it, always ran rich, smoking black whenever I would get on it. I got it with 165,000 miles on it, and finally sold it with 280,000+. It had the 5-speed manual, which I think was its saving grace. that, and the fact that it was a 2-door😉. It always had a bit of an oil leak, from the rear main seal most likely, but never had any big problems, and it was actually quite torquey. They were rated at 145 lb-ft which was a good amount more than the 2.5L 4-banger. Especially in low range, I was never of want for more torque. More horsepower, DEFINITELY! LoL 😂. I couldn't keep speed up a hill on the interstate to save my life, but I once had that thing hub-deep in sugar sand going up hill, and the engine was lugging and starting to knock, but refused to stall. Then I looked down and realized I hadn't even put 'er in low range yet! Slapped 'er in low, and got out of there no problem! Another time, I was camping at Elephant Butte Lake in NM, and I found a pallet someone had abandoned there on the beach, and I decided to take it for firewood. I didn't want it inside the Jeep as it was covered in sand, and the roof rack didn't work because I didn't have any straps to secure it. So I got out a crappy little tow rope I had, and hooked it to the hitch, planning to drag it back to my camp site. I had 275/60R15's on it at the time, which were AMAZING for the sand; the Jeep literally floated over everything. I drove for a while, then the rear started to axle-wrap and I was like, "huh, seems like a bit of an easy spot to need low range" but I went ahead an shifted into low and kept going. Then, about 100 yards more, and it started axle-wrapping, AGAIN! I though, "Wow, I really shouldn't be getting stuck here, what the hell's going on?!". So I got out to look around. When I got to the back I was like, "Where the hell did the pallet go?!". The I saw the tow rope was super taught and led right down into the ground and was impossible for me to pull out! That pallet had worked its way down into the sand as I pulled it along. It was no less than 3 feet under by the time it started impeding the Jeep. I just unhooked, turned around, and pulled back the other way to get it out. BTW, that pic of the old grey XJ you show near the end... Did you notice someone put the freakin' grill on UPSIDE-DOWN?! I hate when people do that. Shows how little they pay attention to what they are doing!

The dauntless was a 225 V6, but Buick did make a 198 version for economical purposes. I rate the 225 up there with the 4.0 six cylinder as a good motor. If it were me I would rather have seen that motor back in the XJ than Chevys 2.8 V6. Or they should have designed the Cherokee around the 4.2 six cylinder, but again that motor had a single barrel with only 112 horsepower. The four cylinder had a two barrel with 105 horsepower. On the axle question I say blame the government. Thanks for the rant. I read to much. Great video.

I had the 3.7 in my Dakota and it lacked power and got horrible fuel economy. It was also a very noisy truck. I have a 2006 Chevrolet with a 4.3 L in a manual that is far quieter. The penta star 3.6 L is a great engine. It has more power, much better fuel economy and a lot quieter. As for the GM 2.8 L, I had one of these in a 1986 Camaro. Even with the multi port fuel injection, it didn’t have the power to get out of its own way. This is especially true with the automatic transmission. Allegedly you could get some speed out of this with the manual, but it would still take you time to get there.

I’ve definitely noticed some of the pain in the ass aspects of the 4.0 in XJ. Accessing the rear most valve cover nuts is frustrating experience, as well as change out the firewall to engine ground cable (ditching the OEM aluminum flat braid for copper cable from Big 7 kit). The space for doing oil filter change is not great either. It’s clear about the “shoehorn” done to fit it in, even with firewall alteration to make just enough clearance. But the 4.0 has been so damn solid, and never had any issues. The Cherokee rebadging to Liberty for US only had my eyes rolling. But one solid evidence of its lineage is the fact that you can direct swap “Liberty” rear disc brakes onto XJ, including the parking brake cables. Only thing you have to tweak is using ZJ soft brake hoses and proportioning valve (I don’t like the one piece soft and hard line combo they changed too on Liberty- $400 or more for that and it doesn’t work without mods on xj anyways. No thanks). The Dana 44 thing surprises me - they are least could have offered it as option through life of the XJ run. I didn’t even know a Dana 44 for front existed - wow. If money were no object, I’d likely export front and rear 44s and drop them in (through as a mostly daily driver occasional light off-road or foul weather, the Chrysler 8.25 seems to do fine).

I've replaced the relay already and then one day i noticed it wasnt turning on so i wiggled the connector that goes to the fan and it turned on. Only thing is its kinda difficult to turn the fan on now. Only thing saving me from overheating is the mechanical clutch fan but even that doesnt help the A/C much. the 42re's greatest single flaw was the shitty design desision to prevent lube circuit flow in park. the idea was to crank up the vehicle in park and allow the engine and transmission to come to operating temp before moving in the winter. Well, if you park somewhere to eat, you can roast your clutches and steels in short order idling in park on a hot transmission. aside from that and the electronics, it's not THAT much different than the old school torqueflite 727 from classic MOPAR.

Also I can't seem to get rid of the source of a "service 4wd switch" code. The fluids we're topped off but the message still fluctuates on and off. The fuses are fine from when I checked last. Just a lot of troubles in what's a fairly low mileage (85k, 10k is mine from the last two years with constant oil changes every 6 months.) So I don't really know how to feel about keeping her. @@TengrioftheCrimsonSky Well the only place you would have 90w in a Grand Cherokee is (should be) the differentials. Maybe you have a blow axle seal? You can usually tell because the inside of your rim is wet from the escaping oil. As for the 4wd light, that is like an issue with broken wires behind the EVIC. Those Grands are notorious for wires breaking and causing strange error message. You may want to consider getting behind the dash to see if the evic wires are all intact
