The DJI seems great, but to me it’s priced really awkwardly. It’s almost too expensive to be in the same league as this, but it’s still cheaper than a “pro” system. But if I’m already spending that much money, I’d almost rather spend a little more and get a truly professional setup from Sennheiser or Sony.

Great one as always! I want to love my wireless go ii’s but for me they clip a lot in pretty much every setting. and I feel like I can instantly tell when someone is using it because it sounds a little crunchy to me compared to some higher end wireless systems. But that’s just me. And Potato Jet I guess lol but overall it’s a beast when it comes to use cases for ways to use it. It’s nuts!

@SoundSpeeds3 жыл бұрын
Tom, I'll start by saying I love your videos. They always make me smile. Ok... Now to add a few things as only crazy people (like me) can. The Rode Go is a 3.65mw wireless system vs the Deity which is 25mw. Power is logarithmic though so a lot more power gets you a little more range. The Pocket wireless system also works within the Connect system and is supercharged when using it with Connect wireless products. Now for something I didn't find fair... your outdoor range test. You mention having a license so I'll assume that's part 107 so you likely were holding your drone controller while doing your walk test, right? If that's the case, the wireless frequencies of the drone controller could have been creating RF spray affecting the wireless performance of the Rode and Deity not to mention interference within the same frequency range. That's likely why the outdoor range test in an open space was so short for both systems. Am I right on this? I "watched" your video while driving home after work so it was more listening and an occasional glance up at a traffic light. Overall though, fair comparison and I enjoyed it.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
I think you're 100% right about the drone controller being a potential source of interference. Next time I'll have to get someone to help me so I can keep it away from the remote. I have no idea if it's the same type of thing or not, but I did the same test with my Hollyland wireless video system and had no issues with interference at all 🤷🏻♂️
@SoundSpeeds3 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck I know at least some Hollyland products operate between 5.1-5.9 GHz so they shouldn't interfere with 2.4GHz wireless at all. If anything, it would work the other way around. Drones can also have different bandwidths they can use in flight. The Skydio, for example, has 20, 40 and 80MHz bandwidth modes and 80 is technically using the entire 79MHz legal spectrum that Wifi and 2.4GHz wireless would use. You might look and see if you can minimize the bandwidth your drone operates within and see if the range increases. Who knows, that may even be another Tom Buck video - Best drone settings when using the Rode Go or Pocket wireless. Just thought I'd throw that out for your consideration.
@nathanksimpson2 жыл бұрын
I was about to comment something similar to this. Most DJI mini/smaller drones use 2.4 and 5.8GHz. In the controller software you can sometimes limit the drone to the 5.8 frequencies which could solve your problem. I really enjoyed the live drone footage showing your progress awy from the receivers. Very illustrative!

I legit thought that was a Canon XL2 in the background for a few minutes. Haha. When compared side-by-side, the Deity definitely sounds as if it captures more low end while the Rode Wireless Go has some type of high pass filter that can’t be bypassed. Like you said, if you have the Rode, you don’t need to run out and get the Deity. But if you’re in the market, I’d go with the Deity unless you need the Wireless Go II. I have the Rode Wireless Go and it’s been great though it does occasionally drop the connection in my family room/home theater where I often record videos, even with direct line of sight. It might be due to the 10-15 2.4Ghz devices in that room, but honestly who knows?
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
It's a Canon XL1S! I've been meaning to make a video about it for a while, but ended up being distracted by the Canon L1, which is going to be next week's video. I was also wondering if other devices (like my drone controller) would interfere with the 2.4Ghz frequency.

Great video. Really enjoyed the outdoor and drone shots. You should go outside more often (as should I). The Deity sounds better and is a much better value since it includes the lav. The Rode Lavalier Go mic is currently $79 which means you spend $278 to equal what Deity gives you for $169. Really a no-brainer considering you get better sound and avoid the awkward look of having the transmitter clipped to your shirt. I have the Wireless Go II. As you pointed out, it costs much more to get 2 transmitters. Being newer, it adds other features not found on the original Wireless Go like finer gain control and backup audio.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
The backup audio is super cool. Definitely eliminated any worries about dropping a signal while recording.

And now you'll have to do this all over again with the DJI option. Bad timing, but still very informative!
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
I'm honestly not interested in the DJI. I've got a few personal gripes with the company itself at the moment, but more practically, it's 2.5X the cost of the Deity so I don't even think they're direct competitors. At that price I'd rather spend a little more and get a full fledged pro system from Sony or Sennheiser, so I actually think that while the DJI product itself looks super cool it's priced in a very awkward place.
@zeluisbelo3 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck You got me curious on the gripes you mention. As for the price, the DJI has two transmittors/mics for one receiver, which is in line with the format of the Rode Wireless Go II, they are priced very closely and I think the DJI even got a charging case. That's more of a fair comparision. Maybe a future video if you pardon DJI.

Hi Tom, thank you for the objective review. Would you consider reviewing the dji mic that cam out a few months ago. And compare it with the rode go 2 and diety. I watched about a dozen reviews of dji mic but they all are like commercials for dji and not very objective. It looks like dji sponsored a huge number of KZbinrs to compare dji and rode go.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
The DJI mic looks pretty neat! You’re right that DJI is pretty aggressive with marketing, but from what I know they don’t have any input on the final videos. My only issue with the mic at this point is the price. I think the simplicity is great, but it’s almost in the range of pro level Sony/Sennheiser systems. I like the Rode and Deity options because they’re so affordable and make it easy to out good audio in the hands of anyone. 👍
@VisualCody3 жыл бұрын
Personally think the Deity sounds better. the Rode seems to have some kind of low cut filter on both the internal and external microphone. Good for removing handling noise but something I could do in post would rather have the full range which the Deity seems to offer Both great systems but I have to agree with you the Deity seems to win out in every aspect

Is there a setting that fixes this or any suggestions?

Hmm, the sound pads should be the same quality as everything else. The only thing that comes to mind is potentially a bad cable or the cable not being a "true" TRRS cable.

Now you have to do a comparison between the Deity Pocket Wireless, the RODE Wireless GO II, and the DJi Mic that should be released soon.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
The Go II's built in recording is AWESOME. I'm definitely interested in that. The DJI mic looks super interesting and they always make good stuff, but they're also kind of on my poo-list at the moment, so I probably won't be getting one. I also think it's priced too high. In my mind, these are very consumer-based products and the $200-$300 price range makes sense. The DJI isn't much more expensive, but once you get near the $400 price point it almost makes more sense to go further and get a truly professional system that will give a LOT more in terms of features, reliability, and usable lifespan (Rode and Deity both offer higher end systems and other companies like Sony and Sennheiser have some pretty legendary stuff). The difference between these simple systems and something like that is huge, and I think DJI is pricing themselves out of the category.

@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point! I don't think the drone remote was interfering, but that's actually an interesting point 🤔 My thought is that while it seemed like direct line of sight, there was a slight elevation change, so maybe that did something (along with me facing away from the receivers).

The presence of the Deity is very impressive. But then again it's Deities signature... I must say I was kind of shocked at how thin the Rode sounded. Sure with some EQ, it would brighten it up. To my ears at least I really did not like the sound from the Rode. I 100 percent agree that a lav mic is where these make the most sense and I was expecting the Rode to improve but it sounded just as thin and I have used that exact lav through my Panasonic GX8 and gotten better audio. I think overall it is brilliant that consumer-level wireless audio like this exists now because for the longest time people had to pay similar money for awful cheap receivers that were not reliable at all! And seriously hats off on your production level, really go above and beyond

But I will definitely consider the deity until I get the Dji maybe when rode makes the iii they’ll copy the AirPods case design which I love ❤️ You have the best reviews Tom u should be proud of all that work especially that intro 😍

Some filmmakers still use old Rode large boxes, they say that signal is more reliable than new Rode Wireless Go. But Rode Wireless Go II is totally different beast, it have own memory in remote also.

If you ever have occasion to revisit these, it'd be good to know if they can charge and record at the same time, and if they can, if they pick up interference noise from charging.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
The receiver uses its only USB C port as the output for the camera via a USB C to 3.5mm cable, so it can't be charged while in use. But I just tested this with the transmitter and it WAS able to keep transmitting while connected to the charger. The red light was blinking on it, which usually means it's charging (it wasn't muted). 🤷🏻♂️

Hi Tom, during the long range test, was there any 2.4 GHz (WiFi) signals emitting from a phone in your pocket or the quad-copter controller? These may have swamped the RF signal. This is a common problem in offices with multiple phones, laptops and other devices connected to the WiFi. Something to be aware of after a field test, when the crew shows up to the shoot and range suddenly drops to 10 feet. 🤨
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
I think that's a very real possibility that I didn't think of at the time (especially with the drone controller). 🤦🏻♂️ If it was from the phone though, that's different in my mind since as "consumer" grade products these are likely to be used around phones quite often.

After watching this review I have to say it is pretty good. Obviously Tom's opinion. Here is mine: When was the Rode Wireless release April 2019... Deity.. November 2021. This is over 2.5 years in difference and we all know how fast tech moves. Imagine reviewing a 2 year old Samsung to a Shiny new Apple, actually be it any device from Laptops to phones to cars?? Makes no sense.. So yes Rode does have a newer version, Wireless Go 2. I would of loved a review of a single receiver from this model, I know pricing is different but I think this clearly have the Rode as a winner.. I would not say Deity is a copy of the Rode Wireless 2 but they did release this device after the wireless 2 was in the market for many months and yet we are comparing it to the older model. If anything this shows me the quality of the Rode Products. I do not doubt Tom's integrity for one second but if I received a free item to review over an older tech model which I purchased of course I would love and be stoked with my new free gift. Even if their is a disclaimer there is obviously a subconscious aspect to it. I also think for anything professional the Rode Connect and rode Central add so much value to the Wireless Go product (you can tune the sound to your liking so it is a winner every time!).. Lastly I believe the Rode is made in Australia, please correct me if I am wrong but I love to support diversity in supply. Disclaimer, I had no preference between the two brands but after doing further research Rode is my Go II
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
I love Rode and have a ton of respect for them (and yes, everything is made in Australia, which is fantastic). The old vs. new argument is a valid one, but this is interesting to me since Rode and Deity specifically have a history of leapfrogging each other with products (sometimes Deity is first and other times it's Rode, but they each have a lot of VERY similar products). As for free vs. paid, if anything I would think that I'd be biased towards the one I paid for 😁

If there was no Rode Wireless GO II, without a doubt the Deity is the best choice. Now, compared to the RW GO II, which has new features, it's hard to compete. The Sennheiser XSW-D is pretty good too. But in addition to being more expensive, it also only has 1 transmitter and doesn't have as many features as the RW GO II. But the sound is better.

These are still the easiest to recommend. The DJI mic is also very popular, but I haven’t used it. If you’ve got the budget, a pro-level system like the Sennheiser G4 will put you into a different level.

In regards to the “gain” options, I noticed that the Rode Wireless Go doesn’t actually control gain… it only controls the volume of your receiver’s output to your camera. Does the Diety control the gain on the microphone side? I only ask because the Rode is INCREDIBLY easy to clip and digital clipping sounds absolutely terrible. If the Diety can control mic gain specifically, that would make it beat the Rode hands down.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
I believe they're the same in that regard (receiver output being what's adjusted), but the Deity has more increments so I've found it easier to dial in the level I want.

Great review Tom - important for folks who want to use the wireless systems! I was disappointed to learn that both Deity and Rode do not have replaceable batteries. Leaves you kinda stranded when a battery change is needed and I feel that is a poor design choice! Big thumbs up on your video 👍👍👍

Great Video but I always wondered for real… Why would I want to film in one room and walk 4 rooms away. 🤣🤣🤣. @mattwruff3 жыл бұрын
We can agree to disagree on what a good-sounding Mic is. The Shure TL48 or the Countryman B6 is an example of good sounding Lav's! Trouble is the Rode (and I assume the Deity) don't put off enough power to use a good lav mic. Now based on sound through Sennheiser studio headphones the Rode Mic sounds better than the Deity but neither are great. You are correct that these are better than nothing at all and you're also right about not just using the 'brick' but using a Lav to hide the brick. I think as with most things it what you can afford. If you need wireless but can only afford the Rode/Deity then there you go. I have Rode Go, RodeLink, Pico 2, Lectrosonics and my primary system the Shure Axient Digital that cost well a lot! But as with most things you get what you pay for. I will point out that I people spending $5000 + for a camera to shout 4K and then only spending $200 for the audio and I think that's the problem. I would rather people buy a Sony ZV camera with good lens for $2500 and then spend $2500 for good audio but then again I'm old school...
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
For $169 I think it's tough to go wrong, but you're 1000% right about the expensive camera paired with chap audio example. I would pretty much always recommend investing in audio BEFORE investing in new camera gear. A lot of people have also brought up the Wireless Go 2 or the new DJI wireless, but once we're getting in to the $300-$400 price range, then I think there's a good argument to go with a much more professional option option. For the price I think the Deity is tough to beat.
