Another plus for the DJI is the receivers' screen is on the back and not the top. This means you can easily see the screen when it's mounted to your camera. On the other hand while the rode's system for exporting audio is slow by comparison, I do like the ability to add in and out points and only export the section I need.

In the real world distance test, the signals are reasonably comparable, but OMG, the DJI takes the prize for sound quality. The Rhode is bright and tinny with a lot of background noise. The DJI sound is well rounded and with very little background noise. You can hear the same thing though less severe in the clipping test at 19:00 and the mic at 3 feet test at 21:10. That sealed the deal for me, because the sound is really what it's all about. All the features are just conveniences, but in this case, one product seems to have the best of both. I'd been planning to get the Rhode for quite some time, but the DJI just took it's place on my gear to get list.

That's a good point on the outside test. The DJI audio was much more focused on the voice. I'll do more outside tests for a follow-up video for a true side-by-side comparison.

@@DroneFilmGuide That's definitely part of it. The Rhode EQ is also focussed on the higher end, whereas the DJI EQ profile is more even, perhaps even weighted a bit to the mid-lows. At least for the male voice, this provides a richer sound. Maybe have female and male testers to see if the Rhodes EQ profile is better for a higher voice. Personally, I think the DJI is going to sound better for both. FYI, I'm a sound guy, and was listening on professional reference headphones. More standard headphones/speakers might not show such a wide difference, but it is there.

Thank you for the comparison, having already purchased the DJI, this was more of an affirmation with me. And you probably know that firmware has allowed for improvements already, like dimming the indicator lights on the DJI transmitters. I'll be testing out a use-case for plugging these in directly to a very loud event PA system, via XLR to 3.5mm cable and attenuator. If it works, then I believe I found the near perfect solution for my typical event coverage shoots. I do wish there were an internal 20, 30 or even 40dB pad so that I wouldn't even need a barrel attenuator, but that's a minor quibble on my end. Cheers!

Did it work ? I bought this product this week . And I brought it to use in a live event and after being 4 meters away from the transmitter the audio started to clip a lot . @OrenArieli
@OrenArieli 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlexandreCalvario you can plug a line level output into the DJI and it will transmit and record...but the caveat is that some line-level outputs are 'hotter' than others, and if you're going from a speaker output, it will surely distort and clip. When you're going out from a DJ's board via RCA to stereo 1/8" plug, it should be okay, but you'll want to monitor it on your receiver. If you find that you have to turn the gain down quite a bit, then you're dealing with a hot signal and it might distort when the music cranks. My go-to for the past few gigs has been speaker out to a Zoom H5 recorder, and then using the DJI to transmit from the headphone out to my camera. In essence, the Zoom H5 is my main source, but I can monitor it and have a great sync track available on my camera as well. You'll still want to carry a barrel XLR attenuator with you, as some systems need 30 or 40dB cut before going into your Zoom recorder.

Both sound great. I prefer the fullness and balanced sound of the DJI, but you could argue the Rode is slightly more clear. With that being said, the Rode also has a harsher high-end that emphasizes “s” sounds and can sound ever so slightly tinny. As far as utility and convenience, DJI wins hands down and would be the clear choice for me.

One thing make me hesitate a lot and it is quality in the long run. I mean rode gives you like 10 years warranty, but no one talks about DJI very bad aftersales services and even more so parts. I have had 3 DJI drones and each with problems. One is lying in the sea. But my Phantom 4 pro has 1 battery that has completely swollen, and another one looks a bit like it. Yes I have not fly it a lot during the last 1.5 years because of restriction lockdown in my country because of COVID. But now I cannot get this battery anymore, it was even difficult 2 years ago and the price has sky rocketed. In fact it is my latest battery that was barely used that is swollen. So how much time will DJI support its product. Or it is like Chinese junk that you have to rebuy completely in 3 years!!!

I've been using the Rode WG2 for sometime now and they have not failed me yet. Other than the fact that last weekend, I was out in -3 C temps filming and thought the transmitters and the receiver had enough power to last a couple of hours. However not the case and discovered some of my last couple of recordings had no sound for the camera, so I had to stop and charge them up a bit in order to finish my filming. I usually charge them up the night before to ensure I have "all-day" power, however this time I did not. They were sitting for about a month without being used, and I thought they would have still had a high SoC. Lesson learned and will be getting me one of those 3rd party charging cases for my Rode WG2's. Great comparison video so thanks for this and I too, will keep what I have in the WG2's. Don't really see a need to change.

I run the go 2 system and have not had any issues. The UI is a bit annoying, but I set it up once I purchased them and haven't had to go back after that. (Never record far away from camera, so drop outs haven't been an issue.) The DJI seems to be more user friendly out of the box, which I can respect, but I prefer the sounds of the Rode. End of the day, if you know how to use your editing software, you can make them sound identical. Grab that $50 dollar charging case off amazon, and now your Rode has the leg up on battery life once more. Just account for that in total pricing.

Good point. I'm not sure how you can find the Rhode's sound better, though. Listen with quality headphones side by side at 15:00, 19:00, and 21:00. DJI cuts out a lot of background noise Rhodes lets in, and has a much better EQ profile by default, at least for the male voice. You're right that those things can be corrected in post, but if you don't have to, that's a big time saver. Maybe not a factor if you're only editing short videos or plan to cover it with a soundtrack... but personally, I'd rather have the best possible in-camera recording requiring the least work in post.

@@backpacker3421 By the time I got to this video, it was the 4th video I had watched on the DJI (2 previous being side by side comparisons, 1 video was just a guy using it for the first time type thing.) Across these videos, I always found myself glancing at the screen while the Rode mic was the one in use. As you stated, my headphones are likely poor quality, along with that everyone's ears are different. To my ears, I prefer the Rode. I am listening on a cheaper pair of JBL over ear headphones, so I am sure it doesn't really matter. at 15:00, this wouldn't apply to me as I am never more than 15 to 20' away or recording in traffic. As for wind noise, I've seen both perform well (via youtube videos) in low wind applications. Neither of these would do great in high wind. At 19:00, I use the manual settings in my camera audio, which greatly improves the sound quality. Personally doing it this way, I haven't had any issues with background noise, but once again, I don't record in those environments. At 21:00, I would throw that test away. I do agree that DJI sounded better in this bit, but when am I ever going to record with the mic 1" from my chest, facing my chest? I clip the mic to an apron or shirt facing upwards and it sounds great. To that point, I suppose DJI pics up better indirect sound? These are just my opinions, and of course I have had hands on experience with Rode, so that is my preference. People should buy whichever sounds best to them, or is best for their application. Rode just does it for me.

Hey Jude all that said, as a professional sound engineer using nearly every mic you can imagine, if you have for example someone with a speech impediment, I’ll always reach for the mic which boosts the 4-6k range to try to receive as much of this range which can be slightly less pronounced in that sort of a vocal. Additionally, placement of the mic also effects the reception of each receiver pick, as in taking into account any level of proximity effect - (how much of certain frequencies are collected or lost over a given distance). By speaking directly at the mic on the stand in front of him, it may very well be considerably different from being used on a lapel. Another thing to take account of is whether or not folks intend to use the built in microphone or whether or not they choose to avail of a lab mic plugged in. I for example have a pile of Sennheiser MKE2 GOLD lav mics, which as I’m sure you’ll understand would sound just as different again from the original packs mic as the DJI lav mic will sound. At the end of the day, many folks using these really are using the recording feature as a backup only, using the TRS stereo jock output to be popped into the DSLR or Camcorder styled affair like some of the Canon XA40 that I have on fleet. Currently I have a Set of sennheiser EK/SK100 receivers/transmitters for use with any of my sennheiser wireless mics at all, but they are much more bulky on my Sony A7iv and that adds a chunk of weight to my DJI Ronin RSC2, so for me this is a weight reduction effort, the fact that I get some backup recordings is just a bonus to me.

Well done and thank you!.. This is a very good example of how to review and test a product properly. In short, after research of some products (RODE WIRELESS GO II, SARAMONIC BLINK 900, HOLLYLAND LARK 150, GODOX MOVELINK) for very first time user for wireless mic, my choose is DJI MIC for this time. At the moment I wrote this comment, there are 17 videos about comparison of this two devices on entire KZbin in all Languages and I literally watched ever single one. I have to say this is the best comparison video. All the questions that I need to know before purchase was answered. More important one for me is that you give all the information and do tests in objective ways; not saying like other reviewer: "this sound beter that other", you give us the results and we can hear, think and decide which one is best or suitible for us. Maybe I don't care latency or no need charger case but some one needs, background noise level my red line but maybe some people doesn't care to much.

I'm of two minds with all these settings in both. I have the older wireless go. Turn it on and it works. As I age I hate tiny pokey screens, I tend to use mobile apps. Great to have loads of flexibility but frankly, I just want it simple. It's bad enough having to check all the settings on my camera so I like to just plug and play with the sound. To each their own. BTW why does every you tuber complain about the rode logo and shiny finish... Just flip it over and put the clip on the outside. And with a lav. I shove the transmitter in my pocket... Totally put of sight. Surely others do the same.

Just on a side note, when boosting a low signal in the example you provided here at 19:50, your still in a 'controlled room'. So boosting it does not sound so bad. But if your in a noisy environment, you will be boosting all those noises as well. I know its easier said then done, but there is no replacement for Signal to Noise Ratios.

You think that would be any different from just boosting the gain on the TX/RX/Camera? I feel like that too can bring whispers from the back row into the recording. At the end of the day, it's physics: If your subject is talking just a hair louder than the ambience the only solution is for Uncle Joe to yell "Louder! We can't hear you!"
@doublemm06
@doublemm06 3 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely correct. If you do a straight boost with no adjustment to your input and output to get a better signal to noise ratio than yeah that will be the result, but if you make those adjustments then you should be able to eliminate a good amount of the background noise and still boost your audio. Also keeping the microphone close to the source helps as the louder and more clear sound will cut through the background noise.

Great review, thanks a lot, made my decision much easier to go with the DJI. One remark: A PAD is not a compressor or limiter, here is a definition : The Passive Attenuator is a purely resistive network that is used to weaken or “attenuate” the signal level of a transmission line while improving the impedance match. So it just attenuates a signal level, not compressing or limiting it.

One thing missing for me in all these review videos is a direct size comparison between the Rode receiver and the DJI receiver. In the charging box, the DJI receiver looks far larger than the Rode. But I don't know if that's just a trick of perspective or is it really twice as big as the Rode receiver? And is it far heavier because it has the touch screen? I'm wondering if the DJI receiver would be too large to be sitting comfortably on top of a GoPro or a similar small camera. But I don't think I've seen a single image of the two receivers sitting side by side or on top of a camera.

I'm a recent new user of the Rode WG2 system and you forgot to mention the very useful handheld accessory for the Rode which turns it into an interviewer style mic complete with pop shield. This recently saved my day when doing a walk and talk with a corporate client. We were able to get impromptu interviews, testimonials, and it saved me loads of time. Also the clip it on and forget it system is great for nervous subjects as you're going to get the candid moments before and after the actual camera rolling section (where they freeze like a deer in the headlights!). These candid moments can produce great audio clips that can be used in the final production. One other thing you forgot to mention is that with the Rode software you can choose which bits of the overall backup audio you want to export, you don't have to just keep the whole thing. I didn't know this at first and was having to save big chunks of silent audio or people shuffling about getting ready. With the selection method you only need to export the things you want to keep. Agreed, the software to get the files out needs a rethink, we need better waveforms (to choose those bits to keep) and definitely we need a simple batch output. Also, the export doesn't remember where you last exported to, so you have to keep defining the path. Simple updates to the software will make this a complete pro system.

As a run and gun professional Filmmaker, the DJI is an obvious choice over the Rode. The Rode is just not functional enough in a fast pace professional enviornment. I cant have app slowing me down or having to use the computer software to move files. I hate the buttons on these wireless mice, the touchscreen is so much more intuitive. And the charging case for the DJI is an absolute must on a functionality standard but just a standard for the market. Chinese copies of these mic systems come with a charging case and more accessories. Kind of insane that a pro audio compnay as big as Rode is slacking compared to smaller or companies were audio is not they're primary business. Rode needs to do more because they're competition is undercutting them, they cant rely on their brand name forever.

My guess is that they will release a more expensive Model that is a direct competitor to the DJI… but whatever they do, their absurdly limited app needs to be fixed. Onboard recording is a great feature that is largely ruined by the tedious transfer process.

Very good video. I’ve been using the Rode II for over a year but today I went to connect the transmitters to the computer and I kept getting an error… seems like Rode helped me make the decision to get the DJI to replace the Rode. Ordered the DJI and will use it for client work from here on out… and my Rode II will now be for ZOOM meetings.

Hi, there is a misconception about the PAD fonction in the rode microphone. The PAD is NOT a limiter that compress the signal to prevent clipping. Activate the PAD lower the input gain, it is why you had to add way more gain than the dji after. So basically you just lowered the input gain and add more input gain after. The PAD is usefull when your source is very loud and is clipping when you don't even add gain, the PAD set a lower input gain to prevent clipping but it does not compress the signal at all. Other than that, thank you for your in depth comparison!

I really enjoy your very thorough review and I completely agree about Rode's conspicuous (and garish) glossy logo. As soon as I purchased mine, I cut out some heavy (matte finish) black paper and taped it over the front of the transmitters. I like their product, but I paid for it and don't feel a need to advertise for Rode with a shiny billboard right below my interviewees' faces in all of my videos. Thanks again for making this video!

Great review and tests. Covered everything I need to know. I'm using the Rode system for weddings for about 2 months now, and the transmitters always clip when someone gets too excited. With the PAD on or off all recordings are clipped. There is no way of adjusting the transmitter levels at all. Just the output of the receiver to the camera. I think you call it "global level". That doesn't adjust the transmitter and you end up with crap audio the recording. Here is a good test you can do next. Attach both transmitters to a stage performer and see the recorded levels. Let me know if have experienced this and if you have found a workaround.
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're right, the audio recorded internally to the transmitters can't be controlled - only the pad. But the gain control on the receiver (0 to -30) does affect the levels of the audio outputted through the 3.5mm jack on the receiver into the camera. So with -30 on the transmitters and levels kept low on your camera you should get by but the backup recordings on the transmitters might be worthless as you say.
@doublemm06
@doublemm06 3 жыл бұрын
You don't actually control the transmitter volume on the DJI. You cannot physically adjust the volume on something from another device without some form of remote access to the device, even if its something as simple as an infrared remote control, which neither the Rode nor DJI have. What you adjust is the amount of input the receiver is getting from the transmitters, not the transmitters themselves. You would have to be able to adjust the transmitters themselves physically to adjust their volume. So while you do get more flexibility with the audio received at the output end, it wouldn't prevent the transmitters from clipping (except maybe at times in the case of the rode and softening the pad). As these transmitters don't have adjustable volume themselves what you need to look at is the SPL in which case DJI wins with 114spl compared to 100spl on the Rode. So the DJI is less likely to clip shouting into it as it can handle more sound pressure. But honestly directly speaking into these mics they will not be great for shouting. Its best to place them somewhere where the microphone is not directly in front of your mouth, or use lav mics to reduce the amount of input going into the transmitters as lav mics tend to be fairly quiet.

I have the exact same issue with clipping on the RODE. Regardless of how I set the levels or pad I can easily clip the audio. It’s one of the most basic things of any audio system and I can’t believe RODE messed this up. The DJI either has a greater input range or a built in limiter because everything I’ve heard is clip-free.

Very in-depth review and well done at that! I have to say, it seems that the Charging Case is very handy, and I hope we'll see this with more items in the future (not just mics). Love the side by side comparisons, and as you say both have great audio. DJI seems to have hit the convenience factor nicely on this set. May have to set aside some green for these when they come out. I've been wanting to switch from a corded lavalier to wireless.

Reasons why I need the Dji mic, convenient for all my devices and it is completely versatile no need to buy extra stuff to make it work. It’s perfect for me. Been waiting so long for a rode mic killer, I think they did it! Now let’s get a 32 bit float on version 2 😍 1. the clips for iPhone recording and camera recording versatility is insane. I use both iPhone and cameras and even go pro and it is so convenient to not worry about Trs cables or trrs cables etc. (With rode thats an extra +$50 to buy the USB C and lightning adapter, and no need to get a phone clamp with a clip for the rode receiver $20) so for me that’s a +$70 The charging Case, it’s not just a case it’s functional too! To buy a similar one for the rode mic it’s 3rd party and +$70 So the Dji is $529 cad and the rode is $369 cad, but for the extras I need it’s +$140 bringing it to $519 and for the convenience…. I think the Dji is definitely worth the extra $10 for me. The only reason I would buy the rode mic is because of the Pad, snd the app looks more convenient snd more versatile and the battery life is almost double

@@LouisLuzuka I will have to figure out if it's truly a manual gain control on these DJI sets. If it is, I'm picking a set for sure! Yes, it is bigger, and a bit more expensive, but if it can be set to manual, I don't see why I won't try them. Because sadly both Sennheiser AVX and RODE Wireless GO have automatic gain, and it is probably good enough for most, but I don't want to compromise like this. What AVX has however is a less crowded wireless bandwidth and locking mics, but I don't know if the automatic gain isn't still a deal breaker.
@LouisLuzuka
@LouisLuzuka 3 жыл бұрын
@@samuel.gabura oh thats tragic, I don't trust auto gain T_T if you find out let me know because I bought cheap stuff before in the past and I dont' mind paying for it if I have something that will work, I just can't deal with something I can't trust... I mean most of the time is good but I prefer to have it dialled in. I guess technically I could have a backup audio for redundancy, its always good to have a back up especially if its a 32 bit float but some moments you can only get the shot / genuine reaction once, and its better to get it done the right way. you brought up a very valid point my friend.

Thank you so much for this detailed test, which has decisively influenced my decision to switch. I have twice within a year at important events with Rode had significant problems. More specifically with the recorder function and the later transfer to the computer. Either the software (Rode Central) crashed immediately when the device was connected, or in the course of processing. In the event a year ago, I could not even save the raw data to send to Australia for conversion. Today I was somewhat lucky that at least that worked. So I'm switching now and hoping it will go better with Dji. Just having the data in a ready to use format is a key advantage of Dji for me, as RODE support is not manned on weekends so I can no longer take on time critical jobs with RODE equipment. What also bothers me a lot with the Wireless go products is the lack of ability to get replacement units in case of loss, or destruction. Even the smallest materials can only be purchased with difficulty, or not at all. The only alternative is to buy the complete set new. And when the (German) support tells me that I should be happy because I can build my own replacement devices for future events, I am completely finished with this company. Note: Both my computers and the Rode hardware and software are always maintained and up to date.

Thank you, GREATLY, due this comparison. I was close to deciding on the Røde, until (through another KZbinr's video) I found out about the DJI Mic. At that point, it was " six of one, and a half dozen of the other"...literally, 'on the fence'. Thanks to your comparison, I feel the DJI is not only the better choice, but also the smarter one. One point you didn't (but could have) covered is the cost difference. On the surface, the Røde appears to cost less. However, as DJI includes the charging case, and Røde charges extra for it, in the end, the DJI is on-par with (and, depending on who one purchases through, could cost less than) the Røde. The 'mortal' of this story is, I'll be getting the DJI. Thanks, again.

I listened to this while doing some work with my hands. As someone not knowing which system was which; in some sound tests I heard tiny difference but either satisfied my ears very well. The only downside with both of these is the recording format; that I would like a complete idiot friendly floating point (fpADC) based system that just promises to capture perfectly without manually setting volumes. Integer based systems where you need to set gain seems a bit unnecessary/ old fashioned in 2021. Having a recorder/transmitter system that captures perfect fp32 audio internally and also outputs a good analog signal to the camera seems like a great future product.

So every single time you want to record you need to push button on the transmitter? Is there a record button or a turn on to record function on the receiver? Kinda the same way the Rode works? I prefer that i’m in control, which is the one that holds the camera, instead of the mic(transmitter) in other words, it needs to be a single step to get it to work.

RØDE has added a bulk export option to their software for getting files off the transmitter. The reason they use proprietary formats is so they can track when the connection was lost to the receiver, as well as place markers. Perhaps they COULD have used a sidecar system instead, making things easier, maybe they'll do that with the next generation of hardware.

If I didn’t already have the GOII I’d be seriously looking at buying the DJI but the extra features won’t improve my output. The biggest advantage is not having to export files 1 by 1, I have had to retrieve the audio from the transmitters a few times due to interference (or just wanting to get natural conversations had off camera - not in a sneaky way) and while it’s great that you can do it, it’s tedious and time consuming.

I recently purchased the Wireless Go II to and had to return them because the second TX would completely die when it reached 60% then when you plug it up to charge jump back up to the correct % then fluctuate once you take it off and it reached 60% again. Sent it back for a replacement unit and boom now the exact same issue is occurring but this time only on the first TX. I'm running the latest software and firmware and given my need for the devices I've just reserved myself to having the first on constant battery power while using it since thankful it allows for that.
