How To Build a DIY Vocal Booth For Under $200! | Build A Portable Recording Booth

I finally built mine. Sharing my homework in case anyone runs into the same issues I did. The 1.5' lengths (which I read as 1'6") should be 1'5". If you cut the 12 sections to 1.5' (1'6") they won't fit, but you only need to cut one inch off of each of the 12 sections to make it work. I think they intended the 2.5ft (2'6") sections to be 2'5" also. They'll still fit together, but at 2'6" your blankets will hang a couple of inches off the floor. As before, if you've cut them to 2.5ft (2'6") you only need to cut an additional inch off of each section. The blankets have loops, not just grommets, and they'll fit the 1 1/2" diameter PVC pipe like sliding curtains onto a rod. When possible, remove the section of pipe and slide it through the loops, rather than sliding the loops onto the pipe (as they did in the video). I ordered a fourth one so that they'll overlap more and have more of a ruffle; they're a bit taut with just three. I used eight 10ft lengths of 1 1/2" diameter PVC pipe, and I listed my cuts below. I didn't have a whole lot of waste, but I'm sure there's a better combination. I don't remember what other lengths they come in, but with something like five 10ft lengths and four 6ft lengths, you'd have nothing leftover. 1st: Two 3ft sections, two 2ft sections 2nd: Two 3ft sections, two 2ft sections 3rd: Two 3ft sections, two 2ft sections 4th: Two 3ft sections, two 2ft sections 5th: Four 2ft 5in sections 6th: One 3ft section, four 1ft 5in sections 7th: One 3ft section, four 1ft 5in sections 8th: Four 1ft 5in sections. If you're a little confused by the differing names of all of the fittings like I was, don't worry about that. Just go by visual appearance and purpose. Make sure you get 1 1/2" diameter. Some of them look tapered, but that's just to prevent snagging; your 1 1/2" pipes will still fit into them. I couldn't find them all locally and the ones I did find were more expensive anyway, so I ordered them all: You need *four* 4-way tee fittings (the link is for a Pack of 4): www.amazon.com/dp/B00MNIYPFI?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details (one of these) These go vertically on the rear side. You may go over budget on this project, especially with 2022 prices (and if you get a fourth blanket). I ended up close to $300 but it's still very cost-effective.

I'll be using the booth with a big mic with a shock mount, mounted on a tripod mic stand. Does it seem like 3 feet by 3 feet is enough room to include a mic on a tripod stand, along with a pop filter? I'm also 6'2" tall and I'm wondering if 3" between me and the top of the booth is enough headroom. Do you have any opinions about that? Thanks again

A tip for tablet users: You can buy a tablet holder that with adjustable clamp to attach a tablet to the pipes. Gives you light and you can read the text from it easily, or control the DAW from vocal booth with suitable app.

Finally built one of these for my own! However, i did a few minor tweeks to really give it that more "professional" touch and look. First off, i put some cardboard walls on the inside and lined every wall with acoustic foam squares, and also added a wall mounted fan in one of the corners. For inside lighting i ran an led strip around the top, and cut the surrounding foam to fit. The result is a MASSIVE noise reduction from inside to out, and inside, virtually dead. The sound of a dead clap is quite interesting. All of this and still saved over $200 building it! (I also extended out the side walls to make it a 4'x3' space for more room)

If you're speaking inside the booth you don't want the mic to pick up room reflections. If a talent agent or whoever listens to your audition or demo and hears the "room", that's a strike. Don't you think reverb is something used artificially? Adding a reverb effect to guitar or vocals? "The booth is for reverb"?? Makes no sense. What you want to do for recording the voices is called "absorption". Homemade bass traps are the best way. If you make this booth and can still hear the room it's useless.

Check this out: I also bought myself a $100 Gazebo / Pergola (200cm x 200cm) and placed it in my basement on a noise absorbing rug. I left the outside "walls" off and placed moving blankets on all five sides. Got myself a 10M led strip for the inside and some bass traps in the corners and foam on the inside off the blankets. Super easy set-up for recording with my D18 and singing at the same time straight into my iPhone using the Roland Go Pro mix. Call me cheap but I just love my little "tent" inside my basement. Nice and cozy. Love your channel man!!

I think this idea is great. I have a pretty isolated room already, but need slightly better absorption for some of my recordings. I think this is a great solution. And for those KZbinrs out there that want it to be a little more aesthetically, pleasing, you could always double down on the blankets, and have a second set on the INSIDE of the pipes too, so you don't have to see them. 💪

Designed and built one of these, trying two types of moving blankets. I didn't notice a huge difference in recording with or without it. Been using a master closet, filled with clothes instead... Just like engineers did in the past.... Closets, bathrooms, kitchens :) Works really well, but it means moving equipment to the closet but, found a moveable rack cabinet, which a laptop can sit on. Planning to modify & build it. Will probably sell the vox booth. If u build one, make sure you don't make it 8 ft tall if u have an 8 ft ceiling. Have enough room for a person, wearing headphones (adding height) and a mic stand and possibly a stand for lyrics on paper, a phone or tablet. If u don't have a ton of room, think outside the box (pun intended), like making it triangular so it's placed in a corner.

I will note, that if anyone else is planing to make their own vocal booth, don't forget to take the thickness of the PVC fittings into account. If you follow the measurements in the video, you will end up with something that is taller than 6.5 ft.

@I A M D Y N A S T I I built it, but if I could go back, I would actually just build sound panels and cover my walls with them. But if you're set on building this booth: I recommend double layering it, to make sure there are no reflections coming off the walls into the mic. Also! DO NOT buy the blankets from the link in the description. They arrive damaged and smell terrible. I instead got all the blankets and grommet kit I needed from a Harbor Freight store. You can find them at a hardware store. I got 9 blankets total, two per side, and one for the top. In the end it was about $250. You should buy a PVC cutter tool. Makes it easier.

I made one of these a few years back. I made the mistake of making it too small. Big enough for one person and mic. It's nickname is the casket. As bad as that sounds it ended up creating a really nice isolated sound. Paired with a SM7B it was very much worth the effort.

First, I would like to shout a HUGE thank you for sharing this brilliant idea that I needed to see a lifetime ago LOL.......but really God knows exactly what I need and when. This is just what I need. I've gotten my blankets and saw, but that PVC is now 2-3X the price listed in this video!!! I have searched all over online, locally and second-hand, and the prices are all pretty much the same!!!! This is definitely less expensive than the Vocal booth to Go, but is no longer very budget-friendly. I'm ecstatic about building my booth because I have songs that need to be recorded like yesterday so I have no choice but to invest the necessary funds to complete the build, but I thought it would be a kind gesture to update everyone's expectations on what they should be prepared to spend on this alternative DIY booth. I built one like this myself, draped two layers of moving planets over it. It got really hot in there when singing and when I sang louder still a lot of low end reverb and echo bled through. I ended up buying an Isovox2 and it’s vastly superior to any home made vocal booth. It’s expensive but so is completely acoustically treating your room. Pound for pound the IsoVox2 is the best option out there. I wish it wasn’t so damn expensive though

Just built this out, so a note if you're looking to build based on these specs: The pipe fittings add 2in, so you have to adjust for either the 1'-6" pipes to each be one inch shorter at 1'-5" or the 3'-0" pipes to be two inches longer at 3'-2" in order for the width of the sides to match up.

Yep, I had the same issue... they didn't account for the length of the connector in-between. I made mine larger... 5 feet instead of 3 feet, with 2.5 feet at the top instead of 1.5, but obviously the same problem. Easy enough to cut the short ones a little shorter, but it would've been better to know ahead of time.

Not well at all, unfortunately! The moving blankets just don't have enough mass or absorption ability to really dampen the sound very much. This is more for controlling reverb and room echo.

You can add more blankets to this type of setup to get multiple layers for a *little* better control of your yelling, maybe even air-gap the blankets by an inch or two, but yeah...still not going to quite you down very much.

You could also mount blankets to a corner of the wall( 2 sides settled) and just construct an L shaped wall to close up. Obviously this isn't portable, but takes up less room as the L shaped " wall" can be turned around to lie flat against wall

The pipes being round, it will be fine either way. The sound will disperse unequally on the round pipe and then bury itself in the blanket. The key is ridding yourself of hard flat parallel surfaces where the standing waves and reflections can cause problems.

Little addition if you add some PVC Water Pipe Clamps Clips the ones that allow PVC pipes to be clip to the wall, you can screw or glue them into insolated foam which can be cut to the size of the squares spaces of the booth you then clip the foam onto the pipes this will fix sound isolation issue and easy to dismantle. You can add the foam all around but please note you will need ventlation some type of fan I use a slient usb fans I made using 4 200m fans which are silent I did this because they were at hand and was easy enough to add a usb and controller to them 2 for intake for good air and the other 2 for outtake the bad air.

Where are you buying those moving blankets? Harbor Freight has a better price on those, and they come in several different sizes. I've got several walls in my room covered with them, and they do a great job on killing those reflections.

Great video. Moving blankets are rated in "pounds per dozen". * Light duty are 35 lbs/dz. * Medium duty are 60 lbs/dz. * Heavy duty are 90 lbs/dz. * Real sound blankets are probably heavier. Sound blankets quite often have multiple eyelets on each side. You can add these with a brass 3/8"-1/2" eyelet sets. No sewing, just a hammer, punch and die set. You might want a 2" x 2" nylon or canvas backing on each side under the eyelet. You can use black cotton cord to tie them up. The least expensive heavy duty black/white blankets I have found are Supreme Mover Moving Blankets, 4 blankets for $90. Here is the exact blanket description on amazon: Supreme Mover Moving Blankets | 72 inch x 80 inch Heavy Duty Black and White Moving Pads| 7.5 pounds each (90 pounds per dozen) | 4 Blankets BTW, you forgot to mention that your sound booth is portable. Just disassemble it.

Bear in mind that acoustic blankets with the grommets do cost quite a lot more than standard moving blankets.

I built mine the same way you did.. But I just purchased heavy duty moving blankets (the 96lb ones) and I bought a grommet kit and used a mallet to pound in the grommets.. Then since nobody is going to see it, I just used large zip ties and then rolled the top over for a clean look. One thing I am criticizing is your cost estimate.. If you order the pre made ones online like he did your going to spend more than $179 on just the blankets alone. If you do it how I did it you'll spend around 96 dollars total for absolutely everything.

Now, what about having a little workstation for a small desk, chair, etc. I’d like to have the laptop in there with me. Maybe a mic boom hanging from the top pipes? What modifications would you recommend to make this a bit more solo-friendly so I don’t have to leave the booth to hit record or tinker with the DAW? Could you sit comfortably in there with a musical instrument?

You could use the same concept and make a small box that sits on your desk for your mic to sit inside. yo would just have one side open so it wouldn’t be fully isolated but is much better than recording without it.

If you use reaper, you can use a web interface for remote control, specially play, stop and record for specific tracks (other DAWs might have a similar option)

Two questions: 1. The folks at Vocal Booths to Go say that unless you glue these PVC frames together, there's a good chance they'll fall on you. Have you had any stability issues? 2. To what extent does size/shape matter? I've heard some VOs that were done in very small booths of this sort that sound muffled. Thanks.

I can say we've used this type of setup for several voice overs and neither of those worries are true.

I ask because the room in my home where external noise is least likely to be an issue is a bit small, so having a booth I can assemble and take down would be great. Just to clarify: when you say you've used the booth for "several" voiceovers, does that mean you don't use the booth regularly? Do you leave the booth standing, or assemble it/take it down as needed? You want the textile to be ruffled to reduce sound bounce inside. Its interesting but maybe not resistant enough to hold the soundproofing weight for singer soundproofing, or if you need to be loud for your voice acting etc

I’m with you on this. That was definitely not a very dead clap at the end there. You can still totally hear some reflections. Also I’m visually impaired so I’m not sure if he’s talking from within the booth at the end of the video, but even with the music going in the background you can hear his voice reflecting around the room if he is. It’s a cool idea though and might work in quieter situations.

@@sannaanna9992 Yes! One thing to be aware of are the pipe lengths depicted at 3:48 ... these should probably be with the connectors in mind (which add several inches), not the pipe length alone. I originally cut the pipes at those lengths, but it came out too tall (the blankets hung and didn't touch the ground), so had to trim further accordingly. I love my booth! When set up, it's a very consistent environment that I find stress-free and flexible for my music project... I did some singing that were days, even weeks apart, on the same song (making lyrical or performance revisions), and it still sounds like it was all done over the same take! :)

I'm in the middle of building this and I just discovered I REALLY could have used a clearer description of all the PVC fittings. I cannot figure out what the difference is between a side elbow and side tee. Back to Home Depot where they don't know either :( A graphic of the different pieces would be extra helpful. Just Saying.

Just a question. Take your frame and blanket setup and add some 2 to 3 layer cheap blackout curtains to the inside. Not flat but waved vertically similar to if they were pulled aside partway on a window. They are designed to block out light and noise. I think the curtains and blanket setup would block most outside noise and flatten all frequencies. What's your take on this change?

(Sigh) ...it HAS been an adventure..... This was my experience..... 1. I had to cut half/most of the pipes AGAIN to make them an inch shorter to account for the distance between where the PVC pipe stops in the joint/tee and the dead center of the joint/tee itself. Gratefully, I had almost if not a full shop in the same room, so (after obscenities) it wasn't the end of the world. 2. If you play your cards right, you could probably do it with nine 10 foot PVC pipes. You might even be able to do it with eight...but I would check the arithmetic on that. 3. I ordered the blankets using the link provided, and after hanging them, they were FIVE inches too SHORT (from the floor)! ....back to the chop saw-- AGAIN. Gratefully, the cage is still a little taller than I am...something to consider when you're planning your project. As an observation....if you wanted the cage to be sturdier withOUT gluing it together...drill pilot holes and drive small screws to hold the pipes in place. That way, it's sturdier but still "semi-portable" after you unscrew everything. Oh...and as another observation...if/when you want to disassemble it....bring a pipe wrench...big enough that the Orca dude doesn't laugh at you in the middle of a perfectly good bar fight. Even without the screws...the pipes ARE going to STICK....over time..... Plan it out on paper down to the inch....you'll save yourself a lot of Pepto-Bismol.

Did you find that without cutting the sides down, the top “ceiling” bars didn’t fit, and it all came tumbling down? Cause that’s where I’m stuck 😂 How much exactly did you cut off the 3ft sides? I need help 😭

@@kaysm7567 ...as I recall....I had to cut the roof sections one to one and a half inches shorter to get them to fit right and the corners lengths five inches shorter to get the mats to touch the floor. Hope that helps.
