I wonder if the post Bell and AB drafts of recent years isn't the Steelers attempts to keep their type of malcontemps out of Pittsburgh. The aforementioned were handsomely paid, but pouted aa if they were cheated and also eliminated any chances of any Ramon Foster Steelers of winning a Lombardi or two. Not to mention that these two put themselves above the team with their casting locker room talks by the HC. Imagine the last few years of Big Ben and maybe more years if they had still been team players. They were good but we're made better by their Steeler opportunity and especially the players around them.
@thomasgorman15356 ай бұрын
What is this talk about the RBs & WRs not being paid, diminished. The Steelers always paid them among the top salaries in the NFL? Loudmouth primadonnas diminished themselves with no outside assistance. Their ugly greedy ego riddled personalities robbed those deserving of any chance of Lombardi fulfilments!

I heard you last week DK - and as you said then, Tomlin loves, LOVES Najee and so does Mr Rooney. Never once has any of them discounted the hard miles he has put in for the team. Especially as the only one to run for over 1000yds for 3 consecutive years. For people to think that the Steelers would let him go, or disrespect Najee in any way is mind boggling to me. Don’t worry, some of us are actually listening and are on the same page. Have a good one DK - thanks for another episode.

Hey DK. I'm hoping you're exactly right & without question we keep Najee. Najee’s cap hit on a longer term contract will also be a lot easier to manage cap-wise. It’s ’only 6-7m’ on the 5th year is an automatic cap hit for this year. Simply, we can’t afford that if we’re looking to sign the rookies and sign a potential veteran over the summer. We only have ~18m available. Worrying about Najee going anywhere is like worrying about being attacked by a box of kittens. He’ll be here, and the money will make sense when the time comes.

It Truly does appear that most of this year's draft seem like high character young men !! That goes a very very long way in the locker room as well as the prep and overall Play !!! 😎

Hey DK, I know this weekend is “Rookie” mini camp and that involves UDFAs and 1st year players, but my question is, what are the rules on other players on the team as “spectators”? Can players like say Cam or Russel or Fields come and watch these camps and give advice or is this a violation of rules from the NFL?

I love that Omar is doing so well and everyone is happy with him but if he had the franchise QB salary to deal with he’d be having to make some of the same concessions as KC did. Fans keep forgetting that in the exuberance of the offseason but it’s going to be an issue again at some point and it won’t all be flowers and sunshine.

Great episode! This draft was very intentional not just for bulking up the Oline but adding high value/football lovers. This goes right a long with your comments. Culture/ discipline problems were here not that long ago and it ate away at what should have been a bunch of deep playoff runs. And lastly, I think people are just so impressed with how Omar operates in contrast to Colbert's style but a lot of people are forgetting about all the good things and drafts that Colbert and Tomlin had and only focusing on some of the poor 1st Rd guys, improper roster management, and not being better prepared post Ben and not the total body of work. Keep up the good work as always

Colbert's last five draft classes: 38 players drafted 9 players remain on team, including Dan Moore, Calvin Austin, Demarvin Leal and Mark Robinson, who ALL could be gone after Latrobe. 1 #1 pick remains--1!!--and that's Najee. No transition plan for Ben's retirement. Talk about losing your fatsball. He drafts TJ in 2017 and hung it up.
@nolashawn6 ай бұрын
Re RB contract: ideally sign both; but if you had to choose one? Salary expectations with the Pedigree of a 1st rd pick are different from an undrafted free agent. I hope they’re making their decisions on Merit; can always find another RB in rounds 2-3. (Obv DL in 1st)

Who are the culture leaders in the Steelers offensive locker rooms? I personally have the opinion that nobody has really been able to step into that role since Ben retired. I hope Russell can be that leader and hopefully pass the baton to Fields, but are there others that have that role?

DK I know culture issues may not be a short term issue, but there's been a trend of the Steelers drafting WRs really well, getting a few great years from them, then they leave and either fall off of a cliff or win a Super Bowl (Juju). Roman Wilson feels like a different kind of receiver, one that we haven't had in a long time. Wouldn't it make sense keep trying to build up receivers like him, or keep drafting high talents with attitudes that are off the team in 3-4 years? Both can be effective, just curious about your take. Love the show BTW and listen daily.
@johnbruce40036 ай бұрын
DK is right. Najee couldn’t possibly price himself out in Pittsburgh. Allen Robinson made $10M last season, couldn’t get open to save his life. That number is probably the most Najee will ever see per season.
@RicoCosta3176 ай бұрын
The thing that people like to just sweep under the rug and pretend it never happened is that the good young talent like Najee, Pickens, Warren, Austin, etc., were hampered in their development by the unimaginative, completely predictable Canada schemes, not to mention a mediocre at best line and terrible QB play. Najee in particular suffered because nearly all the plays they called for him were runs up the gut where he had to try to plow into a brick wall again and again, mostly because teams didn't respect the pass. Yet somehow he still managed three 1000+ yard seasons. I hope they do work out a long term deal because I would hate to see him thrive in another team's offense just when they seem to be bolstering their own.
@oldgrizz87206 ай бұрын
I hope they get back to smash mouth, dominant, punch you in face football. I remember players like Greg Lloyd, Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Joe Green, and so many others who embraced the violence that is Football. This has been lacking for far too long. Roman Wilson seems to have some of this attitude. Hope Steelers are able to get this back.

The pattern in the league is to extend RBs rather than pick up 5th yr. By doing this they could keep Najee longer while he is still productive and not renew when he declines.

He Dk. Payton Wilson has the feel and maturity of a player that should see significant playing time immediately, if not be designated a starter. Patrick Queen will be learning the system. Cole Holcomb will be returning from ACL reconstruction. E Roberts is older and not an ideal match up in coverage. Durability is certainly a question for Wilson, but it seems conceivable the ILB group has two 3-down players for the first time in over a decade. Am I getting carried away too soon?!
@yourneighbor69576 ай бұрын
I get the Colbert hate criticism, he earned it big time. You have to include Tomlin on this topic too, from 2010 to 2020 they had some terrible drafts and some that were actually really good , but when you draft guys like Jarvis jones , Artie Burns it kills almost all the credit you had , I personally think Kevin was extremely lucky early in his career , look back at some of the miracle plays that got Pittsburgh 5 and 6.

Thank you for the excellent episode, DK! I appreciate all your takes, even when I disagree with them. The reset needed from our favorite football team can only happen, once Tomlin is gone. Imo, Tomlin and Art II are the biggest part of this team's inability to progress. Not only does this team need a cultural reset, they need a football philosophical reset. Hoping this change happens sooner, than later.
