The worst thing about bakugo being hailed as such a child prodigy is that he really is that good. He really can be that heroic. And the fact that no one in his life disagrees with that ideal is what's inforced his hidden insecurities and made him think his closest friend is his biggest threat.

but she doesn't, because her analysis here is inaccurate given the worldbuilding here. At this point in the story quirks are natural and manifest by age 4 and the only exception is deku getting his from allmight which no one knows about, so the psychology of bakugo assuming deku has hidden this from him out of spite is not only justified, but logical, because there has never before been record of someone obtaining a quirk as a gift, so the inherent consensus in society is that it's impossible. With all this in mind, bakugo was correct by all superhuman society standards to assume deku had been hiding his quirk as a flex or to show he didn't need it to be as good as anyone else up until this point.

I absolutely love the way Bakugo is written. A child who grew up hearing nothing but praise, his superiority was constantly validated, and his ego constantly fed. Even when he fell off that bridge, his friends immediate reaction is "Oh, he'll be ok. He's Bakugo after all." So, to Bakugo it's like, "Yeah, that's right. I am that good. I need to be that good, and of course everyone else needs to see me that way as well." So, for someone to not hold him to such standards, they must be crazy. The thing about Bakugo is that, he believes his greatness is guaranteed, but not effortlessly. He values himself for his ability to put the effort in to be the best. So, anyone who questions him isn't only questioning his born ability, but also his ability to reach the standards he's set for himself. I love seeing the innerworkings of characters like these, who have insecurities just as big as their ego.

@dekuisagreatmaincharacter Жыл бұрын
Bakugo is such a fascinating character. He’s certainly hit-or-miss for most people, especially at the start, but even when he’s acting like a dick, he’s so well written. Though that writing can be lost on some people and it’s easy to shrug him off as just a jerk or even rotten to the core with what we see of him at the start. I believe that’s partly because he doesn’t have a traditional backstory of tragedy, abuse or something similar. On the contrary, it seems like he was handed everything from the start. And that’s the whole point. Ever since he was little, Bakugo was extremely gifted. He was the strongest, the most talented, the most confident. And at the top of it all it’s his Quirk, which is extremely powerful and flashy, ideal for a pro hero. He’s quite literally the opposite of Deku. If Deku’s Quirklessness represents his disadvantage, Bakugo’s Quirk represents all of his privilege. In other words, _“All men are not created equally.”_ This privilege is what shaped Bakugo. Growing up he was praised for his Quirk, his strength and his talent, and indirectly taught that is what defines his (and by extension everyone else’s) worth. It’s in simpler words since it’s from the perspective of a 4 year old, but that’s basically what he means when he thinks _“I’m just amazing. No one is more amazing than me.”_ So of course that when Bakugo looks at the Quirkless and talentless Deku, he sees him as the most worthless one of all, below him in every way. And it’s why Deku reaching out to help him (first in the river and then with the Sludge villain) makes Bakugo so angry. Deku is supposed to be completely worthless, yet he is concerned for Bakugo’s safety. And if Bakugo, who is supposed to be the greatest of all, needs Deku’s help, then what does that say about him? Bakugo is extremely proud due to the praise he received. But that also means he developed a fear: That if he ever stops being great, he won’t be praised anymore. If he’s not the strongest, then he no longer has any worth. If Bakugo needs help from someone worthless like Deku, then that means he isn’t strong, and therefore he’s worthless as well. This makes absolutely no sense, but it’s how Bakugo learned to understand the world. Deku’s concern attacked Bakugo’s ego and triggered an inferiority complex. And this in turn led him to develop a superiority complex to hide the inferiority complex. It’s why his mind interpreted Deku’s attempts at help as looking down on him. Because then it’s easier to prove him wrong. From then on he started bullying Deku practically as a defense mechanism. He belittles and harasses him as if to assert his dominance, to show that he is undoubtedly the strongest. Because deep down, he feels threatened by him. But now Deku is slowly growing more confident and is tired of being pushed around by Bakugo. Deku not only standing up but challenging him reignited Bakugo’s inferiority-superiority complex. He’s more desperate than ever to prove that he is the strongest and Deku has nothing on him, to the point that he ignores the exercise and acts recklessly, which costs his team the battle. We’ll see how he handles this loss in the next episode. I’m saying all this as if Montana isn’t going to say exactly this. But going back to my initial statement, Bakugo is a fascinating character, and one that I think serves as a great example of how MHA treats its characters. Bakugo’s issues and reprehensible behavior doesn’t stem from a traditional “tragic backstory” like other characters. But that doesn’t mean he’s not deserving of understanding. And showing him sympathy doesn’t mean being okay with everything he did, but recognizing and validating his story. Bakugo is the first example of this in the series, but he’s far from the last. So when we see similar treatment given to characters with far more extreme actions and stories, it really shouldn’t be that shocking. (I’m saying this from the perspective of a manga reader who is tired of people complaining about the narrative validating people’s pain and history, even if they’re villains. This has been present from the beginning. Validating someone’s struggles isn’t the same as excusing their actions.) Wow, all that and I haven’t even mentioned everything else in this episode. I don’t really have that much more to comment on. Iida acting like a villain is very funny. Deku’s quick thinking continues to be great. Uraraka shows some pretty creative applications to her powers that shows it can be used in battle if you go about it the right way. All Might continues to be a questionable teacher. The rest of class 1-A continue to be there. What I’m here for is Bakugo psychoanalysis, and I’ll deliver on it, goddamnit!
@crossin8772 Жыл бұрын
I think you hit it pretty much spot on with your analysis. Some people look at bakugos backstory and think he had a pretty good childhood and say he has no reason for being like he is, but the thing is if you're raised from 4 to 15 with nothing but praise for your actions, and seemingly no punishments for his actions regarding midoriya then of course he's going to have a superiority complex, and thinking that all the things he did was right. It doesn't excuse his actions but it explains his reasoning in a very real way.

Loved your analysis. Bakugo doesnt have a sad backstory to get sympathy from and he cant justify being an asshole to everyone. He's so hate-able and that's why I love his character so much. Like Montana said with neurodivergent kids 'lagging behind' and sort of needing to overcompensate before fully developing and leveling out, Bakugo is on the other side of the spectrum where dude grew up being the gifted child and developed skills before everyone else. As he gets older, others also develop and 'catch up' to him. Just closing the gap sets him off. He's supposed to be this great person, better than everyone else, so why is he lacking? And that insecurity manifests through his existing asshole tendencies. I also noticed how much other characters are pointing out how "villainous" he behaves. For a guy that desperately wants to be the best hero, he's on the track to villainy. I wonder how self aware he is of this.

One thing I don't like about the translation here, Bakugo goes "he'll be fine as long as he dodges!" but in Japanese his line translates to "If I don't hit him, he won't die!" which I think holds better since it implies Bakugo will purposely miss a direct hit as opposed to the English VA where it puts the burden of survival onto Deku. Otherwise definitely one of the best early episodes!
@DavidRomigJr Жыл бұрын
That’s been one of my minor nitpicks with show. The VA is good but the English version has some minor script changes I wished they kept more literal because of things like what you mentioned.

Another bit I felt wasn't fully translated in the dub, was Bakugos "why can't you do it?" when he was a kid. In the Japanese it conveyed a much clearer confusion. And much more of an epiphany about "him being the most amazing"
@NinjaC Жыл бұрын
only reason why i don't full think that is the case is that they had Deku dodge, which normally wouldn't amount to anything cause even if he knew he was trying to miss you'd still dodge. But when the aftermath is shown it's explicitly made clear that he barely made it out of that unscathed which makes me think that if Deku DIDNT dodge, he might not have died but he would be more than out of commission and in the hospital for immediate treatment

Now that you know how his quirk works, there's probably a drawback to it that not everyone knows about. Nitroglycerin is a medication to slow down blood pressure which means since Bakugou has a lot of this stuff in his blood, his blood pressure has to be very very low. Because of this, it’s possible his body has to compensate for this by producing mass amounts of adrenaline to bring his blood pressure to a livable level which makes his emotions and anger fairly logical. Which brings me to another possible drawback of quirk which is his fluctuating blood pressure. His emotions and anger which can create the adrenaline have to be at an all time high all the time to make sure you doesn’t keel over and die

18:59 as a teacher, I LOVE Toshinori (all might) because he is an awful teacher. At least at first. But he loves his students and is constantly looking for ways to improve his teaching. That is what makes him a GREAT teacher. Teaching is like heroics that way. There are career teachers (people who just do it as a job), and real teachers (people who went into teaching to teach). You can have a career teacher who hates teaching, a favoritism teacher, who loves their kids but is really bad at actually helping them grow (Bakugo and deku’s preschool teachers)and you can love teaching but be absolutely shitty at it. And then you have the Aizawas of the world. skilled teachers are those who love teaching and their students and are willing to constantly learn too. This show does a really good job at portraying all kinds of teachers. And they’re fundamental flaws and virtues

A lot of people jus tlook at him and see a typical "bully", but especially with kids and teenagers it is rarely as simple as just - he wants to hurt the other person. Kids and teenagers are generally a LOT worse in regulating their emotions or procesing them, so a lot of outburts can be a result of that. It is clear Katuski has some deeprooted insecurities, a lot of self-imposed pressure and some anger issues and he has rn no tools to regulate them....we dunno if he will find the tools necesary for change, but I love that the show is not going completely black and white and showing that there are multiple routes for Bakugou to take.

Aside: What made Avatar the Last Airbender so amazing is that it was essentially a love letter from American animators to Japanese animators. "Spirit in the Sky" is a love letter from a Jewish rock musician to the African-American community as a thank you for creating all those spirituals that he loved to listen to. Star Wars was a love letter to Kurisawa movies, Westerns, and Buck Rogers serials. And My Hero Academia is from a manga that was a love letter to American comic books. Works like this are special because there's that little bit of extra heart in it.

In the original he don`t say "He`ll be fine as long as he dodges" Instead says "He`ll be fine if I barelly miss him" , then proceeds to off shot by a tiny amount. You can see that bc Deku wasn`t able to move at all, but Bagukou still missed the blast. And that says more about his character then he carelessly shooting a deadly blast over Deku.

I think people misunderstand hate for indifference. Hating someone does not mean you don't care about what happens to them. It means that you wish bad things happen to them (it is definitely a feeling you have for someone). On the other hand, indifference IS the one in which you truly don't care for that other person, at all. I don't really know why people confuse both... 😂. After all, the saying "hate is just one step away from love" exists for a reason.

6:58 That's only true if you have the insurmountable privilege of getting an early diagnosis and the help you need. You can't "grow" if you don't even realize you've been struggling terribly for your entire life, especially if your struggles aren't aknowledged or legitimized by the adults around you. I got diagnosed with 4 different disorders at once last September at 22 years old. My life has only progressively more unbearably challenging for the past few years. I don't know if I'd get to that point till my mid 30s, if ever.

Bakugo and Deku seem to be two different sides of everything wrong with the society of their world. Deku is incredibly hardworking, smart and strategic but none of it would have mattered if it weren't for All Might giving him One For All. He would have spent the rest of his life feeling like he was inferior to everyone around him because everyone encouraging that thought. The teachers didn't even do anything when he was being bullied. Bakugo has the potential to be a genuinely great hero and his quirk is amazing, but reinforcing that to him made him feel so superior that he has developed some genuine complexes from trying to always prove it. Any time there is even a hint of his superiority being put into question, he completely explodes. Their conflict being presented this way with Deku gaining confidence and power changes everything.

The heroe society truly has a lot of problems. And these problems become even more evident once the villains show up, since almost all of them are products of this broken society.

This battle is one of the best ones I have ever seen Deku knew he couldn't beat Bakugou at close range so he came up with a brilliant plan to win. I love both of them. I can't wait for you to react to the next episode ❤😊

As someone who hasn't watched the show before, but really love it so far. I really like psychoanalysing Deku and Bakugo (I also study psychology so that checks out 😅). But I keep thinking that the way Bakugo is acting right now, so "villainous", will make him very unpopular with the other classmates. He isn't acting like a hero at all, which they all aspire to be. I wonder if they, as a group will stand up to him as well. In any case he won't get praised about his actions from them. His power, maybe, everything else, no. At least I hope not. Not until he actually tries to become a real hero and not just 'the best'. But this is my first watch so please no spoilers 😁

2:17 on the original he wants to be the greatest, not richest, i hate when dubs just chance the motivations of a character, something similar happend on this episode, they seem to want to make Bakugo even less likeable that he already is on the first season

Alright here’s your obligatory long comment full of analysis. This episode is where a lot gets off the ground, but I still say this show truly gets going only at a certain point. It’s not that I actively dislike this part, but let’s just say that this show has a lot in common with Pokémon before it gets going. (There is no such thing as internal monologue. So its complexities outside unspoken mystery or lines quickly swept away are almost nonexistent. The rest is often right there in your face.) Let’s start with Bakugo. His inflated ego came from constant praise of adults and other people around him. Mainly adults. He met an EXTREMELY high standard and now never wants to let that go. There are other factors that made it worse, but those haven’t been explored yet. Deku is the ultimate combination of his greatest fears. This kind of behavior has been forced on him, creating the need to be the best at everything. And his gauntlets as I said before are water tanks. So they don’t just make him jacked from lugging those around, but he’s also already adjusted to the recoil. For such a giant blaster, that could easily dislocate a shoulder with them around his arms like that. And yes this show DOES take that into account. Deku of course is an absolute MONSTER. He knew he couldn’t get past Bakugo who was targeting him so he let Uraraka tackle Iida. His building hallowing attack is MONSTROUS going right through 5 floors of reinforced buildings meant for training. Still no All-Might weather changers and that’s Deku’s absolute maximum. And I’ll be using that attack as a metric of measurement when I measure OFA down the line. Which is possible but also REALLY complicated. Like actual calculator complicated to account for every rule. Also he has a MASSIVE 3rd degree burn on his other arm he used to block Bakugo’s blast. The poor kid is MESSED UP. But he’s already improved so much with his power that he is getting things down to the exact measurement of just Uraraka coaching where to fire his smashes. As for his learned selflessness, it actually comes from his low self confidence. He knows he can’t make himself better as far as he’s concerned so he helps others so they have something. And with every success he makes doing EXACTLY that, is simply more proof that he is correct even though he is now bettering himself he is still not prioritizing himself. Iida is just…lame. And I mean that in the best way. He ALWAYS takes things this serious no matter what he does no ifs ands or buts. And this sentence is always hilarious. I know your power can’t work without touching anything, so I CLEANED THE ROOM TO MAKE YOU USELESS. BWAHA SO EVIL. Never change Iida. I love him. Plus he’s lugging around that bomb pretty easily in a full suit of armor. So it’s easy to overlook how powerful he is. These kids all smashed a LOT of robots, so it’s easy to forget that they are all strong enough to bust a LOT of metal either barehanded or have the technique to create conditions to do so. And there’s Uraraka. Another overlooked powerhouse. She can float herself, and I’m not quite sure what she did when she smacked the rocks at Iida. With the precision she did, I think she actually chained her effect off of the pillar she already had. Which can lead to some CRAZY combos. Although it SEEMS reckless, if the rocks she hit were weightless, all that was is a distraction. weightless objects can’t really affect objects with weight. Not that we can test that since the divide of being weightless and having weight is so separated. It’s not like we can throw a satellite in orbit at a building on the surface and expect the satellite to remain weightless. But considering what she did after, that’s a good guess. (Uraraka has a LOT of moments that have you question her quirk rules. I’ll be covering when it gets weird.) Although we don’t know where she stands among the rest of the class, she’s actually one of the best. (Romantic interest bias! No not me, the show! And also me.) Lastly there’s All-Might. The fact that he didn’t stop the fight to let his successor figure things out is in of itself an issue. It makes way for a LOT of envelope pushing. Although Bakugo didn’t proper commit to his threat other than LITERALLY roasting him, All-Might SERIOUSLY endangered Deku letting this happen and the injuries were MASSIVE for Deku. Although Recovery Girl exists that’s not something you should let the kid depend on. Yet again, PRETTY bad teaching. Yes I’ll be doing this style pretty much for every comment. It’s just how I analyze details. Hope y’all enjoy the essays because they get REALLY big. Because this is the show in its simplest form.

There is a difference between being weightless, and having no mass. If all Uraraka does is remove the effects of gravity, but leaves the mass intact, those rocks would still cause a lot of damage. If she makes them weightless by removing THEIR mass, then the rocks would do basically nothing. based how we see her power used, I lean more on just nullifying gravity and leaving mass, but I can't remember anything conclusive.
@Kaempfdog Жыл бұрын
@@JDP5127 Uraraka breaks so many gravity laws it could very well be both. Sometimes she knows she’s breaking them, sometimes not. But considering she made her shoes and clothes float so she didn’t even feel like she’s wearing them for minimal resistance, doesn’t it imply she CAN remove the mass?
@JDP5127 Жыл бұрын
@@Kaempfdog There is very little difference in that context. To my understanding, the big difference would be the momentum of the object, and a shoe on her foot would not have significant momentum in that situation, as it would be overwhelmed by the momentum of her foot itself. An object with no mass would have no momentum, as Momentum is Mass times Velocity. (thus a mass of zero makes a momentum of inertia of zero) I THINK an object of zero mass would be drastically affected by air resistance, which we do not see. (objects she makes float tend to drift like we normally think of zero gravity. It doesn't help in figuring this out that most of the times she uses her power to just lift things, then drop them under their own weight. Going back to your satellite example, objects in space are weightless, as no gravity is working on them (practically. Obviously some is, but to a negligible degree.) Yet when they collide it still causes damage because they have mass and thus momentum. ---------------SPOILERS AHEAD----------------- _____________BEWARE________________ I checked Season 6, when she floats ingenium to catch Deku. he doesn't seem to impart any momentum on Deku when he grabs him, so that might be a case of removing the mass. I would have expected them to be spinning more from that catch, but He also continued past Deku, and ended up in front of him, so that might be where all the momentum went. Our concepts of mass and momentum are so tied to weight and gravity that this very tough to figure out reasonably. That could also be complicated by the fact that Deku has a ton of momentum of his own, throwing off that math. (not that I can actually do that math without a TON of time and thought.)
@Kaempfdog Жыл бұрын
@@JDP5127 as you said we can’t be sure. And circumstances vary a LOT. We will likely never know for sure. And it’s far from the only thing that always raises my eyebrows with her power. She does some BONKERS stuff in this show. And I intend to say her power isn’t even just zero gravity but outright gravity control. Or at the very least developing to that point. But I’ll let the story get to those points I can say THAT’S REALLY weird.
@JDP5127 Жыл бұрын
@@Kaempfdog That is perfectly fair. My brain just got sucked down this rabbit hole when you said that the rocks were weightless, and I started thinking about weight vs mass. It both makes a huge difference, and no difference depending on the context, and the show seems to actively avoid doing things that would clarify the answer, as the common use is in the overlap.
