One thing that I don't think people really talk about is the fact that bakugo was hyperventilating until allmight started talking to him meaning that he was probably about to have a full on panic attack
@thegreendragon5390 Жыл бұрын
Oh, I didn't notice, but I get it. He's really dealing with his long standing notions about life being . All the way from childhood through middle school, Bakugo was praised and put on a pedestal, while Izuku was belittled and powerless to stop it. Now, at UA, not only is Izuku able to stand up for himself, but Bakugo is no longer "the gifted one". He's now just 1 of 20 in class 1-A, and his middle school attitude that never met resistance before now makes him the violent delinquent of the class. All of his world views are either being challenged, or straight up proven wrong. That'll do a number on anybody.

Suddenly he's thrust into Hard difficulty and realizes he's been a big fish in a tiny pond all of his life and now he has to compete with the sharks and an Octopus-Man.

Bakugou could've easily been a classic, typical bully character, but instead once the early episodes are behind us, every step of the way he subverts expectations. He's smart, gets good grades, and he actually listens to criticism and admits to his own shortcomings. Really, the only things holding him back from being a proper hero are his ego and his warped perception of the way Izuku acts toward him. I genuinely thought I was young Einstein, I kid you not. Entering highschool means entering a different territory. As I enter highschool, I met a lot of people who're much more intelligent and talented than I am. My self-image was questioned to the point of questioning my existence. My literal personality trait back then was, "the genius kid". Seeing Bakugo hyperventilate, seeing him cry and almost have a mental breakdown, I saw my past self. @dekuisagreatmaincharacter Жыл бұрын
Bakugo’s world is quite literally shattering. Now Deku didn’t just stand up to him or challenge him, he _beat_ him. And unlike before, Bakugo isn’t angry. If anything, he’s hyperventilating. Maybe for the first time in his life, he lost. And not just that, he lost to Deku, the person who was always behind him. And when all’s said and done, he’s not praised like he always was, he’s chastised for being reckless and finds himself agreeing with that. _And then,_ when he sees someone else win in a matter of seconds, he realizes he’s simply not the strongest anymore. By his own logic, he’s worthless. Moving away from him for a moment, damn, Shoto’s introduction is really cool, pun not intended. In one move, he shows he’s in a league of his own. And although it’s not action-based, I think Momo’s proper introduction also shows how much she’s ahead of her classmates as a recommended student, at least as far as intellect and analysis goes. Also, not wanting to pet myself on the back, but I lowkey feel like her explaining everyone’s performance on the battle trial in great detail when I write these super long comments. All Might and Recovery Girl’s scene in the infirmary is one I find really telling, but it rarely gets talked about. It’s the first time All Might’s actions are actively questioned. Even still, All Might says that if his secret ever got out, society would be seized by evil. This gives us a little more insight on the Symbol of Peace. More so than a mere title, it seems to be something that can hold evil in check by itself. All Might is willing to drain himself to keep this symbol standing. But it appears Deku, as his successor and new wielder of One For All, will have to inherit this role. And now, I can finally talk about Deku’s fatal flaw. I’ve seen a few people say that he doesn’t have any real flaws. I’ve once read a comment literally calling him a Mary Sue, which only proves how meaningless that term has become. But I will admit that, much like Bakugo’s nuances, Deku’s main flaw can be somewhat easy to miss. I’ve identified two possible reasons for this: 1) his flaw causes way more harm to himself than to those around him, and as such is harder to notice than something like Bakugo’s pride and arrogance, which often targets other people. And 2) also unlike Bakugo, Deku’s main flaw isn’t an individual personality trait or set of traits that need to be overcome if he wants to be a better person. His flaw actually derides from his typically positive traits taken to a harmful extreme. Deku’s defining traits are his heroism and determination. Above all else, he wants to help people. And he’s willing to do anything to accomplish that, even if it puts him in harm’s way. If he puts his mind on something, no one can stop him. These aren’t bad traits to have, in fact they’re frequently portrayed as strengths. They’re what allow Deku to become a hero and inspire others. However, a theme of MHA that will become apparent as time goes on is that extremes are never good. Heroism is no exception. Much like how he overworked himself during training, Deku has a tendency to go too far. Sometimes, his resolve becomes so strong, he’ll neglect his own well-being for the sake of reaching his goal. In these cases, he crosses the line of self-sacrifice and engages in self-destruction. These may look similar, but there’s a fundamental difference between them: self-sacrifice means accepting hardship to help someone else. Self-destruction means actively harming yourself, and can even get in the way of your goal. Like Aizawa said, the way Deku is now, he’ll become incapacitated after saving just one person and force others to come to his rescue. In fact, if I had to sum up Deku’s flaws in a single term, that’d be it: self-destruction. He’s so laser focused on his goals, he’ll stop thinking about himself. It’s like an extreme version of his defining trait of saving others no matter the risk. That brings me to another reason why I love One For All. Because it reflects this fatal flaw in a pretty on the nose way. The only way Deku can use his power at first is by destroying his body. And this time, unlike when he used it to save someone’s life or prevent his expulsion, he used it to win an exercise. The stakes were very low, but he still destroyed his arm to reach a goal when he really didn’t need to. Recovery Girl and even All Might recognize this, with the latter admitting he should have stopped the fight, but was afraid of dismissing Deku’s feelings. That’s very considerate of you All Might, but these feelings led this boy to blow up his own arm to win a mockery battle with no stakes. So the most considerate thing you could have done is stop him from unnecessarily hurting himself. Finally, there is another key element of Deku’s that plays a role in this. I’ve discussed before about how the bullying he endured as a child made him develop a very low sense of self-worth. That means he doesn’t see himself as someone important, which is what leads him to not think about himself in any given situation. To Deku, everyone else is more important and more valuable than him. So if someone is in danger, he has to save them regardless of what happens to him. After all, if he’s not important, then the least he can do is save those who are. Amidst all this, you’d hope All Might, someone who Deku admires and has a lot of respect for, would be able to guide him. But All Might has a lot of the same flaws as Deku. He’s so determined to keep his image as the invincible Symbol of Peace, he constantly puts his body under strain. This disregard for themselves is a trait Deku and All Might share as wielders of One For All, a Quirk whose very name implies serving the world. That’s all fine and good, until it becomes too much. Giving yourself to others is admirable. Giving yourself so much you no longer care for yourself because you’re so busy caring for others is harmful. So to sum it all up, Deku’s altruism and low sense of self-worth make him willing to not just sacrifice himself, but unnecessarily harm himself to help those he sees as worth more than him. That’s reflected in how he can only use his power in a self-destructive way at first. Similar to his master, it’s his heroism and determination taken to the extreme. And if he really wants to be a hero, he needs to learn to take care of himself as well. Wow, can you tell I love the character writing in this series? Anyway, even if it was crazy and brought about the worst in both Deku and Bakugo, their match inspired the rest of the class to give it their all as well. We’ve seen Deku inspiring others to action with All Might and Uraraka, but now it’s clear Bakugo can inspire others too. This shows that, despite his unpleasant and arguably downright villainous personality, he also has the makings of a hero. And to that, he makes an oath: _“I’m just getting started!”_ (That’s where the name of the episode comes from if you couldn’t tell) And yes, he is just getting started. But not just him, everyone in the class too. Deku and Bakugo themselves have a long road ahead, in what’s quite possibly the best written relationship in the whole series. And despite what some people may say, Bakugo is important to Deku, enough for him to reveal some of the truth behind his Quirk. They’re not friends or even rivals yet, but they’re moving forward. And what’s that, a post credit scene? Oh boy, that’s a fun one! Our first glance at any actual villains, and they’re not holding back! We just met these guys and they’re already talking about killing All Might. What will happen next?

something that is lost in translation is the "kozei" word, it is translated as quirk but its meaning is more of "individuality". The quirks not only give them powers but also affects their presonality. So, it is understable that a guy with an explotions power has an explosive personality. I think the only hint given in the anime is when Deku says that once Bakugo's quirk manifested he started to change.
@Kaempfdog Жыл бұрын
If there is one thing this show does well, it is telling us a fight isn’t the ending of a conflict. (Among countless other things but you get the idea.) In regard to this fight, we can tell if anything it started a whole new branch of chaos on this alone. I love how this shows that to Bakugo, he can quite literally gauge the size and scale of his charged attack to Deku’s between the hole in the wall and UNBELIEVABLE size of the attack from Deku in the ceiling. And he knows Deku has him completely outclassed in force. And considering his bullying, this has to be absolutely TERRIFYING. The backlash and control difference doesn’t matter yet, because if he can’t match the force, Deku could VERY easily get to a place where he makes him irrelevant. So he stands there stunned at this revelation and it spins him out of control. And worse, we aren’t even looking at the strongest person in the class. Because this show subverts that expectation of the main “rival” and protagonist being the top people in the class. Because we have now been introduced to recommendations students. The system is simple. There are 2 in each class. 1 based on power, the other based on intelligence. And it doesn’t have you guess who has what just considering the size and scale. (Though we won’t meet the other 2 for a WHILE. So I’ll just point them out when they show even if the show won’t say.) Shoto Todoroki has been established as the strongest person in the class. And with the control to go up and down walls, floors, and ceilings to that exact level inside and out goes to show this guy’s control is RIDICULOUS. Any recommended student tends to be in a VERY different wheelhouse than the other characters. Momo Yaoyarozu is the same way. Momo might be thinking on the level of All-Might teaching, which is years ahead of herself here…and makes All-Might look PRETTY out of his element. Most powers are still unestablished at what they can do and their rules. The show hasn’t taken much interest in it’s background yet, and will only set aside the ones that are meant to be treated as outliers and everyone else more or less shares brain cells. And with so little internal dialogue or much difference in thoughts, it’s hard to set them apart no matter how crazy their designs are. Except Mineta. I’ll…hold my thoughts on him. I won’t cover the other kids when all we saw was the briefest of moments with their powers. And some are still very unclear. We do have a lot of All-Might to go over though. All-Might has a small circle of people around him that know what OFA is and how he’s held it secret. A grand total of 5 people. 3 relevant now, and 2 off his grid. But he still plays politics about it even now so everyone still relies on him. The very fact he had to show his weakened form to the faculty as a necessity for this job is crazy in of itself. I do despise how he teaches, but one also just has to think about his whole ideal. One For All by name is like a complete devotion of selflessness. But with that comes self-sacrifice. And he teaches that to Deku…while forgetting to check on him. That’s the idea of OFA. It’s used to be this godly power meant to sacrifice for others. He’s distinctly teaching Deku to be more self-sacrificial. I know people say he didn’t know of the true backlash of OFA, but this is now the 3rd time he has seen up close that Deku is getting COMPLETELY wrecked and he doesn’t even so much as address anything with him. No ideas to try, and no greater focus. It’s hard make that defense when he runs right past his broken successor to instead cheer up Bakugo, and STILL doesn’t so much as ask Deku how he’s doing after. Also, the fact that this man just told Bakugo that pride is a great attribute and he ABSOLUTELY has the ability to be a hero is just furthering the problem. He stops at the most important thing to say and even writes off Bakugo as over the situation. Let’s let clearer minds prevail, heroes can’t afford to be completely reckless, SOMETHING other than what he says and leaving at that AND shrugging it off as unimportant when it is so COMPLETELY important to Bakugo. Both directions he took this episode are CATASTROPHIC for both of their emotional health. Physical health and growth it’ll do wonders admittedly for Bakugo at least. Deku just got absolutely shafted in this situation. Deku only fights to prove himself to All-Might, and to help others. Deku is NOT a factor of this power yet to himself. And it literally puts him out of commission a whole day. While Deku is getting acknowledged by his classmates now, he sees it as a result of using OFA. Which is sad. Deku has such low faith in himself and any positive interaction he has with people only ever seems to occur after he uses OFA. (Except Uraraka) Even if it’s not about that, it is definitely a pattern Deku sees. He feels so deflated he has to knock himself for NOT being practiced and it just pops out with Bakugo. And he hopes that him knocking on himself will make Bakugo feel better in some way shape or form. (Good job! Bullying yourself always satisfies the bully! No notes!) To end off, Bakugo at the very least isn’t some Moron. He does take things in. There is no quirk that can move from person to person on the upfront of public knowledge. So he does consider the borrowed power a lie. Plus he takes mistakes as breaking him. And that kind of drive goes to show that although he always makes it personal, he does keep himself on the road to be the best. He doesn’t give up at the 1st sign of resistance and he forces himself forward. He now has to compete and he won’t give up. Humbled and humiliated seem to be the same to him. And it continues to be the fight of the incredibly high standard he has had with him all his life. And he won’t surrender it to anyone or anything. So that can still go places. Overall, a pretty decent episode. At least by season 1 standards. It does have trouble holding up as a standalone, but with what it sets up and having that context does make it better. And apparently proper antagonists can be introduced as well now. So we shall see that happen.

I’ve written about in my weekly comment, but if self-sacrifice is an admirable and necessary quality for a hero, self-destruction is the dark side of that coin. It’s self-sacrifice taken to the extreme to the point of actually getting in the way of heroics, not to mention how harmful it is to Deku.

@@dekuisagreatmaincharacter well self sacrifice is often a trademark of Empaths. They often give themselves to others. As you continue to watch Bakugo grow as a person, you will notice how quietly he makes his strides and progress. Once things click for him, or he decides something, his growth suddenly is leaps and bounds. He doesn't broadcast it, so paying attention to him is important, or you may miss the process entirely. The scene of his panic attack this episode is so glossed over by many, and it's a bit alarming. I'm glad you both acknowledged he was struggling, not in a negative way necessarily, but he was overwhelmed. Which is valid when you believe you were praised and special most of your childhood, and immediately humbled not just by other classmates but by a childhood friend you thought wouldn't be a threat. Secretly, he always saw Deku as threat regardless of his quirkless status. Side note to the unsettling sight of Shouji (the guy with multiple arms etc) those with very appearance altering or morphic quirks are sadly looked down on, or bullied, beat down by society. they are shunned and you'll see more of that in the show. just an interesting thing to keep in mind.

Bakugo...in a way he's like a big fish in small pond with mini guppies around him. But he will learn that there are more fish that are bigger and stronger than him. He's no longer in a pond, but a ocean with endless creatures of fighters better than him. A reality he has no choice but to accept..

The tital of this is also because Bakugo saw all the members of his class and how strong they were and felt like he was out of place. Todoroki is so cool. Love him, he's my favorite character. 22:54 he’s a product of his environment obviously HE chose to be a bully, but growing up there was a huge emphasis on being the strongest !! spoilers for those that haven’t gotten to season 3 yet !! we get to see his parents after his rescue and people often point fingers to his mother for his behavior and call her abusive, granted she did slap him and blame him for getting kidnapped however i disagree with this opinion, as its implied as a gag in both the manga and anime and in the manga we get to see several panels of mitsuki worried about her son and looking back at his childhood

Seriously, you’ll get to see her quirk later on and it’s one of the strongest in the series, but she gets treated as being useless for “real” heroics (namely combat) both in and out of universe and is never given the chance to prove herself in that way, being more and more screwed over by plot as time goes on.

This is my thinking from the previous episode. (I've got bad punctuation) I don't think I would ever want to be healed by recovery girl. I think personally that she could take seconds, months, or even years off of your life span in the long run of things. in the previous ep it was said you could die from exhaustion. Right so it's taxing on the body so I'm thinking it either speeds up time just contained to your body or it puts your bodies blood cells into overdrive so it heals at an accelerated rate. which brings me back to the seconds moths and years thing and what makes me think she's the true villain ending you slowly one creepy granny kiss at a time!

Deku's simping for Bakugo is another thing I hate. The guy's treated him like dirt since they were 4 and Midoriya still respects him enough to mostly out All Might's secret just to spare his feelings. It's basically a form of Stockholm syndrome. There’s this fan theory about how Bakugo’s temper, anger and anxiety might be actually a side effect of his Quirk, I’ll try to explain it here, and please let me know your thoughts. (TLDR at the end) At the basis of it, Bakugo’s Quirk, Explosion, consists of his body creating nitroglycerin that’s secreted as sweat on his palms, which he can ignite at will and control the size and strength of the explosion itself. However, nitroglycerin, when inside of the body, can slow down heart rate, and given how much of Katsuki’s body produces, it could slow his heart down to lethal levels. So, as a side effect, his body could induce emotions which elevate the heart rate (anger and anxiety for example) as a way to keep his heart rate stable at a normal level. Which would explain why he tends to lash out at people in situations where his nitroglycerin builds up without a release (him using his quirk). And why he’s usually calmer after a fight, where he purges the nitroglycerin stored up in his body (like how calm he is at the end of the movie, 2 Heroes if I’m not mistaken, because he’d fought the henchmen alongside Kirishima and Todoroki). And the same could technically apply to his mother, Mitsuki, whose quirk is glycerin and also has a temper and anger management issues. Obviously this is just a theory and none of it is confirmed, and that also does not excuse his behavior towards Izuku in any way, it just might be the root of his behavioral issues. TLDR.: basically his quirk gives him nitroglycerin poisoning, which slows down his heart, and his body uses anger and anxiety to regulate his heart rate.

One thing i noticed in the mha fandom is that people treat bakugo as an irredeemable villain, he was a bully sure, but his story doesn't end there, i think people project their own experiences of being bullied onto him, well, hate to break it to you all but he's not your bully. I think this because people tend to like or even stan actually bad characters, like literal villains that actually kill people, but bakugo was a bully, we all dealed with bullies, most of us have never meet a serial killer, so the bully becomes more real than the cartoon villain and thus irredeemable in our head.
