Agreed but outside of that it's useless. You need to look at a person but if the person has an ability that is very far ranged, doesn't work. Also doesn't boost himself. He basically relies that his base form is better than their base form, which we know how that works out this season. Also I guess he's anime. Meaning he has super strength because all normal humans have super strength in anime. So he can jump down 100 stairs and do insane feats but it's not his ability. So it makes his ability look greater than it is. Wish the villains used more guns and that makes quirks like his less relevant and he would have to think more (not saying he doesn't think) but he feels shafted due to having his nullify quirk. Wish he used more Batman or Punisher style fighting where he preplans more...that's all.

But he's soo good without showing any training, mostly sleeping. It takes away his own agency. Everyone relies too much in their abilities that the few that don't are somehow considered geniuses. Look at Stain or Deku. They are considered super smart or skilled for simply having more than their quirk...I find that average. It's just odd how many many characters in this story feel shafted because they are their quirk. UA is a good example of +90% of them become irrelevant despite being the number 1 hero school. That's the odd thing.

I find Aizawa’s judgement perfectly reasonable. This is not just any high school, this is a high school that specializes in careers in being a hero and related fields. And it’s not just any hero school, it’s an Ivy League one. Aizawa is a teacher the school picked and has worked professionally as a hero. He is very qualified to judge his students. He saw Deku fight no one in the entrance exam and then completely incapacitate himself saving one person. If this is typical of what he can do with his quirk after having lived with it for about 10 years, he really shouldn’t be in the hero track of an elite school. Of course, Aizawa doesn’t know he’s only just got his quirk. Luckily, though, Aizawa was impressed at his creative and quick thinking. It doesn’t negate him being a glass canon, but it’s got him considering if Midoriya stands a chance.

When you get to know about Aizawa's backstory this moment just hits so much harder, because you finally understand why he's so strict with the students, especially Midoriya. And why he has such a stong will to protect them, no matter what. He doesn't want history to repeat itself. Kids are supposed to have a quirk at 4 years old more or less, these kids are in high school already and in middle school you get gym classes especifically to work on your quirk, to control it, experiment with it, etc. That's why Aizawa thinks Izuku won't be able to do it, because if he were able to change it so easily, it would have happened years ago, and he wouldn't have destroyed himself in the exam to that level.

Ok so here’s the details I should draw attention to. I will bring this up MANY times, but All-Might is a TERRIBLE teacher and this is a prime example. The fact he didn’t tell Deku that he would obliterate 3 limbs even AFTER training so hard he could NATURALLY pull around a truck up a staircase and up an entire trash pile is PRETTY ridiculous. His advice doesn’t help and it always leads to trial by fire because how else are you supposed to take “the way to control OFA is to FEEL it”. Luckily Deku is a freaking genius in his own right and managed to contain the damage to one finger and won the day by minimizing sheer surface area. Which is a HUGE step forward already. But this kid has NO idea how to use a quirk because he’s never had one. He can’t moderate at all and can only contain where he is using it. Also worth noting that All-Might’s torch imagery shows that what he passed to Deku is NOT on par with what All-Might has in his body. The 2nd torch is much smaller than the 1st in that shot and one day that 2nd torch will become much larger than what it originally came from. So as strong as Deku is, All-Might still completely outclasses him. And what self-respecting nerd would I be if I didn’t use a calculator to gauge this later on? (I fully intend to once certain lines appear. No I am not kidding) But to put it simply, All-Might’s 100% is MUCH larger than Deku’s even in his injured state and Deku is slowly building himself up to where All-Might stands now. Would be a shame if he didn’t say that out loud so Deku is AWARE of such a circumstance. That would be completely irresponsible not saying just how long the road is to maximize the power of OFA so he can strive forwards. But he has to say the end goal is for All-Might to retire and Deku take his place and surpass him. And I get THAT part has to stay hushed until Deku is more ready. Just goes to show how different teaching a student and teaching a successor is. Bakugo has an inferiority complex. A BAD one. Much like many competitive bullies. Though he is without question the most confused by not only Deku getting in, but showing a final gambit quirk he has never seen before. He wrote it off as a fluke, but now he sees it was not to get in the school. Uraraka is the float girl and she is EASILY my favorite of Deku’s classmates. Mainly because she is the ONLY person thus far Deku did not have to prove himself to. Deku clearly isn’t used to getting much respect so her treating him well regardless of seeing his quirk in action or not goes to show how much of a sweetheart she is. And that just brings a smile to my face. Her quirk seems simple how it removes gravity from things she touches, but MAN to have control over an absolute in the world even on just that level is CRAZY. And everything just has to get more complex over time. Iida turned around quickly! Iida was an absolute pain at 1st, but he switches his stiff personality to being endearing in less than 24 hours. The way he talks about disrespecting school property is hysterical. Even though he still completely misunderstands Deku even when given time to reflect on their circumstances. Also fair warning, that man’s hand motions will soon be completely contagious. I don’t want anyone to resist getting the chops. We do have ourselves the class speedster. These characters are basically the class mains. There is one more. But you better believe you’ll be meeting all 20 and they are all incredibly diverse and a lot of fun. Aizawa is the last one to talk about. Not only is his power OP as heck canceling out quirks by staring, but he is also just the perfect stern teacher. Upped by a thousand. His rules are unfair, but they have every reason to be unfair. And they always pertain to the job. To him this school isn’t your normal pick up classes and go, but already starting the career track. Every moment is a preparation to be on the field when they graduate. And pretty much every pro is an Olympic athlete with extremely well-honed quirks that have had their potentials maxed out WHILE being a genius on top of it. If you don’t have the potential to reach such a standard, it’s not a come back and try again. Not every person has the capacity to reach such heights. (And it also goes to show that even though Deku EASILY has the longest road of his classmates who have had their quirks since they were kids AND such a clear long road set by All-Might on the quirk potential alone, All-Might is letting him earn his keep with no outside interference.) Aizawa has to be harsh because you might be an actor out there sure, but you’re doing that to PREVENT people from being in a constant panic over the day to day disasters. And it is THAT part people in this world forget. I don’t blame him for taking such drastic measures…even if it is absolutely derailing to someone’s mental and emotional health to have that kind of pressure on them. But it’s also the job to cope with that.
@dekuisagreatmaincharacter Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t include it in my weekly comment since it’s a big spoiler, but there’s another thing about Aizawa I love. There’s a reason why he’s so strict. In episode 6 he says _“There’s nothing crueler than letting a dream end midway.”_ He’s talking about Shirakumo. He temporarily expels everyone he sees as without potential or not understanding of the dangers of being a pro because he saw his friend die. That’s honestly heartbreaking.

@@dekuisagreatmaincharacter oh this show did a GREAT job setting the stage for the future. One of the hardest things for people with seeing OFA’s depth is that no rule ceases to apply. And it makes things SO complicated. They’ve already set the stage for Bakugo’s hyper fixation on what he sees today. They show that there are connections to find between All-Might and Deku. The way OFA works is that it accrues power over time. All Might inherited it decades before passing it to Deku. In fact, he alone held it for longer than all seven of his predecessors. As such, we can deduce that, though it probably still caused significant physical strain to use, it was substantially weaker when he got it. And his own body grew with it. So he never really experienced the level of backlash that Deku did. It's likely that what he experienced was strains and at most, hairline fractures. Plus, I can't remember where it is, but it's stated that All Might had unusually good control of OFA. Given that there's nobody around to point that out to him, he probably doesn't even know that his fine control of OFA was precocious. So he'd have no reason to think Deku couldn't just throttle it like he did.

@dekuisagreatmaincharacter Жыл бұрын
It’s very interesting and very telling that, while Deku got the most rescue points out of everyone but zero villain points, Bakugo got the most villain points but no rescue points. They each embody one of the fundamental aspects of heroes: defeating villains and rescuing people (or winning and saving for those who know what’s up with these two). All Might continues to act like a father to Deku. Although as a mentor… he’s certainly a great speaker. As noted extensively by @Kaempfdog, who’s also been writing essays in the comments, All Might really isn’t the greatest of teachers. We’ll learn more about why that is later, but for now, I must say, it’s quite something to see a mentor character who’s bad at mentoring. We also get some non-diegetic imagery (imagery outside the world of the story), with cups showing how One For All works (an allegory that will come back later), and All Might passing a torch to Deku, which is very symbolic of the theme of legacy that can be found throughout the whole show. This episode introduces us to Aizawa, aka Eraser Head, aka what if Snape but good? With how different he is from All Might, it’s no wonder they don’t get along. All Might is a motivator, while Aizawa puts up a ruthless wall for these kids to overcome. If it wasn’t obvious (or you haven’t watched it), Aizawa was clearly inspired by Kakashi from Naruto (and this is far from the only Naruto inspiration of this series). He’s the teacher of the main cast, always acts quiet and tired, has a power activated through the eyes (which become red in the anime), and threatened to expel one student on the first day of class. Plus there are some later design choices and backstory reveals that make him even more like Kakashi. We also see the cast of class 1-A for the first time, even if as background characters. Season 1 doesn’t show much of the secondary cast, but I believe that’s for the best. Instead of overwhelming new viewers by introducing the full roster of the class and teachers, it sticks to a handful of characters, who will become some of the most important ones. We already had Deku, Bakugo and All Might, and now we’re properly introduced to Uraraka, Iida and Aizawa. The only thing that appears to be missing is one or more proper villains. But we’ll get there (and trust me, it’ll be AMAZING). In the meantime, the rest of class 1-A sit in the back of our minds. But they’re helped by the fact that they have very distinct designs, making them stick in our minds if only to find out what their Quirks are. The Quirk apprehension test serves as an early exhibition of the creative use of powers that’s everywhere on this show. Stuff like Bakugo using explosions to propel himself forward, Aoyama doing the same with his Navel Laser, the pink girl secreting a substance from her feet to slide, the short guy bouncing on purple balls, etc. Even those with Quirks we don’t know yet, it looks like they’re being creative. To quote one of Brandon Sanderson’s laws of magic systems, “Limitations are more important than powers.” In MHA, characters are stuck with a single power (yes, there are exceptions, but this isn’t about those cases). So the characters, and by extension the author, must either develop their one power to be stronger, or come up with creative ways to use said powers, both of which lead to very interesting situations. And perhaps the best one at coming up with creative solutions to problems is Deku himself. Even though Deku has an incredibly powerful Quirk now, his struggles are far from over. Aizawa’s words to him are harsh: _“You’ll turn into a useless doll after saving just one person. With your power, you can’t become a hero.”_ (only writing this now I realized that last phrase is a direct inversion to All Might’s words to Deku in episode 2) But then, just as Aizawa is noting how Deku has no potential, he surprises everyone by coming up with his very first creative use of his power: if he still can’t regulate the percentage of One For All, then instead of using 100% in his arm to throw the ball, he’ll use it only in his finger. He gets the enormous blast, but the damage is diminished. And taking a page from his idol’s book once more, he smiles as he declares he can still move. Aizawa grins at this, and even All Might is amazed. Although of course, this isn’t enough to automatically get first place. But we’ll have to wait until next episode for the results.

@9:25, this rly selective med school i go to right now used to have cases of students stealing flash drives and notes from other students in the past similar to what u described happened at those competitive schools. rn our notes are all online though so we don't have to worry abt that rn lol

Aizawa's Is a great teacher. He is tough and if someone actually listened to him you would agree in a battlefield instead some judging him what he looks or does. I see people do weird things but they are okay people including people who acts as assholes OR CALLING THEM, looking at you. But their point view is sometime a bit off but I know some of them will learn if shown a different way. I was taught that people can learn from their mistakes and I always judge people several ways. Mostly how they give their first impression and the next after if something is different, not by immediately on first look and give a stupid reason like some people or reactors.

I find Aizawa to be really logical here. U.A is not for people elatning hwo to use their wuirks they just git. It is for people to learn how to use their quirks better, under the assumption they are already used to them. It's perfectly reasonable for Aizawa to assume Izuku isnt ready, since from his perspective, this kid has had his quirk for years and has done nothing to improve it's affect on his body

The thing the strict guy said about Deku, not sure if you caught this, he said that Deku knew that they were scoring on more than just the normal points. During the test he said something that had a similar essence. He said that he would save the girl if it wasn't in the middle of a test. The implication is that the test is more important than her life. He only thinks about scores. Deku had no clue that would get him points but to the strict student its unfathomable that someone would do that if it wasn't for points.

You should change the animation at the beginning and dress Montana as Yayourozu, she is the genius of the class and she figured out too the fact that they will not expelled anyone

Wouldn't reducing the gravity of your shoes reduce the friction against the ground, reducing the force you generate for forward motion?

Can't lie. I'm REALLY starting to hate the notifications. I don't even get the early ones, but I'll see it on my scroll, get super excited.......only to then realize it's not playing until the next day. When I'll be 2 hours into a 10 hour shift.....

6:20 I feel like this is a dub difference. In the original, All Might says: The stronger Deku becomes, the weaker he will be because of One for All's limitations.

(Speaking as a non-Patron because I’m broke) I’m calling it now - at some point in this show, there WILL be a “Aizawa/Eraserhead simp” counter. You can’t convince me otherwise. Jokes aside - am I the only one who didn't like Aizawa at first? He gave me MAJOR Snape vibes - he seemed overly cruel and targeting someone in particular because of the assumptions he made about that person. (Ofc now I know better and he’s easily in my Top 5 favourite characters from MHA)

I mean to be fair to Aizawa he doesnt know about One for All so from his perspective Midoriya had his quirk for a decade and still cant control it

31:30 It'll be interesting to see if Kenny corrects Montana on this in the next episode, but since he didn't catch it here I'm gonna leave the "nerd glasses correction" comment and say: Aizawa isn't in charge of the whole school, he can only expel the students from his class with the test.

So I'm so far behind on y'alls reactions. Also WIFE!?!? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?! CONGRATULATIONS! but when Montana was talking about how they would be training the kids like telling them the game is to win but really to see how they react when they throw a ball at the ground and yell strike i ALSO got a foreshadowing vibe but not for the same reason as Kenny. I don't know if you both will watch the little OVA episodes but i hope you do. And i want you to remember what montana said in this episode

19:18 One of the things I hated most (although I get it for the pacing.) Is this test. Deku is shown to overthink EVERYTHING. And knows he can't use 100%, and is thinking about the "Egg in the Microwave" simile. So knowing Deku, and having thought of it the very first time I watched it: .....Why did he just give it a small sudden squeeze, instead of a long, slow one. Where he could've slowly increased the pressure he was applying in the scale, until he started to actually hurt??
