This would have to be done in one take on the night, because of the live audience. Rehearsed so it's faultless, but on the night, you only get that one chance for the audience reaction. Classic comedy.

Just learnt something I never knew - "In the episode Yuppy Love (1989) where Del Boy falls through the bar, Trigger wasn't meant to be in the scene. Roger Lloyd Pack was rehearsing for a different TV programme in the same building as OFAH. On a break he wandered into their rehearsal room to say hello and told John Sullivan he was free if he needed him. Sullivan wrote him in straight away and he was part of the scene. Many say his part contributed to the sketches popularity due to his reaction when Del Boy falls."

One thing I love about this is how unexpected it is. It's hiding in plain sight. It's in the middle of the episode and while there is a set up to the joke, it's completely invisible. Catches you completely off guard.

Roger Lloyd Pack was originally not scripted in this episode, he was filming in a studio not far away and turned up to ask if they needed him. If he had not been there at the right time, this scene would not have happened and if it did, it would not have had the same magic as Trigger looking around to find out where the heck Del went.

2022 and this is still THE funniest thing I've ever seen on British television. (And we had a lot to giggle along to, back when UK sitcoms were plentiful back then.) I literally cried and howled with laughter for well over an hour straight when I first saw this on the night it aired, plus I had a stich hours after that. It's lost none of it's effect. One of those rare things when the comedy god's bless us mere mortals with all things fools and horses, along with everyone involved in it's creation. If you weren't around when it originally aired, the UK pretty much used to stop and watch it, when it was at the height of it's powers. Seriously, do yourself a great service and find something every series of it is on and watch them all, if you've been unfortunate enough not to have done so yet. (and even if you have, I did twice over lockdown) You will not regret it.

What makes this sketch particularly brilliant is that it was filmed in front of a studio audience and that audience had no idea what was coming, they'd seen no rehearsals, so the reactions of laughter were genuine. The cast had one opportunity to get it right, otherwise the moment would have been lost. It wouldn't have been so funny to the audience if they knew what was coming. The timing is perfect. Brilliant comedy, faultless acting...

Personally for me the funniest moment in the show i would have to say is in Video nasties when Del pitched to Rodney his idea for a movie about a Rhino terrorizing London. Watch the video where David Jason discusses it during an interview - he also had a lot of input, and it was his idea to fall right through the bar, also it was his idea to have the shot of the girls in order to distract viewers from what was about to actually happen, thereby making the surprise all the more funny.
