One of my dream planes! I hope to make a visit one day at their Florida facility!

I can attest to the Exemplary customer service of The Swing family and Velocity Aircraft! When I bought my Velocity it was sitting on the Tarmac at the Factory in Florida. It was being sold by a bank, and Velocity was brokering the deal. They were only making a very small commission on the deal, but from the very first day I arrived they treated me like I had been a member of the family my whole life! They helped me thru my pre-buy inspection, took me one by one, through all the sub systems of the aircraft, taught me how to fly it with their very thorough Transition Training program and added some cool features like that shimmy dampener they were talking about. When I was finished with it all , I confidently took off for home in California. The first leg was non stop from Sebastian Fl. To Austin Tx! Velocity is a wonderful aircraft and the Swing Family is a gift To Aviation!

I'll second the "folks at Velocity are great!!" sentiment. I bought mine 2nd hand. Velocity did the pre-buy. Velocity provided my transition training. Velocity did my first few condition inspections (annuals in the certified world). Velocity answered questions for my local mechanic when I transferred the condition inspections to him. Duane and Scott are just great. I've moved overseas and have since sold my SE but I really miss my plane. Just such a beautiful and fun to fly aircraft. In addition to going big with a 6-seater, I think it would be even lucrative to go small with a 2-seater LSA. The e-LSA market is the fastest growing market of LSA/GA & experimental/certified. I can imagine folks starting into flying as sport pilots then wanting to get their PPL and upgrade to whatever type of aircraft they flew (or conversely, initially choose an LSA like what they want to graduate to so they get the experience), so if I started with a Velocity LSA, I would want to graduate to something like a Velocity XL-T.

I built mine back in 2002 and I absolutely luv it!!! Although I also own other aircraft today with pressurization and deice, I still love to fly my Velocity! I can tell you that VGs and trailing edge fences make a huge difference in performance and of course, a constant speed prop. Like others have commented, the Swing Family is the best and very supportive of builders.

275 knot cruise is the good stuff. That's regional jet speed. Sort of confirms that a turbo to work at altitude is key to speed. But at that altitude we need a pressure cabin too.

its not even close to regional jet speed. They are not talking about indicated speeds. They are talking about TAS.
@DanFrederiksen4 жыл бұрын
@@blusheep2 it's the true airspeed that matters. 275kts is 509km/h. Local route here between Aalborg and Copenhagen takes about 40 minutes and it's only a 239km trip. That's less than 400km/h average. Often time regionals will take it slow and don't go to full cruise altitude. So yes, it is .

@blusheep24 жыл бұрын
@@DanFrederiksen well sure considering that you have to show up to the airport an hour or more prior to the flight then get to the other end and wait for baggage. Flying your own plane is the way to go if money isn't the issue. But fly from copenhagen to venice and that regional will zip by you at 500 kts or more and be there hours before you. No contest. And of course, as you mentioned earlier you aren't going to fly at 25000 feet regularly without pressurization or using a lot of oxygen. This also means that when you are flying between Copenhagen and Aalborg you aren't going to even attempt to hit 25,000 feet in the plane for just 239 km. It would take you nearly that long to climb to that altitude which means the majority of your flight would be well under the 275kt TAS.

He made a mistake when he said the controls are all the same between this and a conventional aircraft. In this type of canard design airplanes, the rudder does not work the same way as a conventional airplane. The left pedal only controls the left rudder and the right only the right rudder - the two are not connected. This also means if you step on both pedals at the same time, you are braking. He also did not say anything about balancing the aircraft if there is only one person as oppose to 2 people. Being that wide, the center of mass is going to shift. Are you suppose to use sandbags or ballasts if only one person is flying? Like a lot of salesman he said a lot, but not really.
@jeffb35504 жыл бұрын
Can understand your take on this, but think you may be a bit more skeptical than necessary. Speaking as a former owner (not builder) of a Velocity SE FG. You are correct about the rudders on the single engine planes. You can add a bit to your decent by mashing both rudders, but makes directional control a bit more of a hassle, better to just manage decent via thrust as Duane suggests. That said, he did skip the fact that the plane needs a bit more rudder inputs than a traditionally configured plane ... especially at lower speeds. In my 172, I could (didn't, but could) fly and almost ignore the rudder. With the Velocity, I could fly the entire pattern using the stick only for pitch control ... all directional control through rudder. This is a plane that you use your feet to fly. The one/two person observation you make is understandable but just not an issue in reality. I flew everything from 4 up with a dog at gross to just by myself. Nothing just a smidge of trim wouldn't sort out.

Its a very forgiving airplane to fly. It wouldn't be a great plane for someone to learn to fly in. Its flying characteristics and the fact that it doesn't have flaps and is relatively fast makes it different then 99% of other aircraft. There are better planes to teach in. Also the time and ease of an RV build is light years ahead of the Velocity build. So, if you are looking to get your son into flying then it may be better to pick a plane that will allow him to get in the air the most efficiently.

According to Velocity's website: "Building a Velocity averages as low as 1200-1500 man-hours, with two-thirds of that time on the kit. The finishing, engine installation, addition of electrical and avionics, and doing cosmetics takes the remaining one-third time-wise. The Velocity is constructed modularly (two wings, canard, and fuselage) and can be completely dismantled at any future time by removing approximately ten bolts and some screws in the cowl. With the fast-build options available, expect building times to drop to approximately 800 hours. See the Fast Build Options page for more details." www.velocityaircraft.com/airplane-faq.html#1

@mci102rv75 жыл бұрын
Niceguy60. That might be true if all you do is fly in the east, but if you fly over the Rockies frequently, especially on hot/high density altitude days, turbocharging adds significant safety. If you don’t believe me, fly a Cessna 182 and then a T182 over the Rockies and see which is safer.

@mci102rv75 жыл бұрын
Couple of corrections. Turbocharging does not normally add more power, and in some cases doesn’t even increase maximum manifold pressure. For example, I flew a turbo Aztec which came from the factory with turbocharged engines. The engines produced the same 250hp per side as the non-turbo charged version of the airplane . The engines (D model) were turbo normalized so the max manifold pressure was the same 32” as for the normally aspirated engines. The turbo simply allowed you to maintain cruse power to a higher altitude. They also increased single engine service ceiling from below 8000’ to around 16000’ which is a big safety improvement if you are flying over mountains at night.
@niceboy605 жыл бұрын
@@mci102rv7 you might be complicating things a bit, A Turbo Charged engine Is under more stress duo to working with higher PSI . I'm assuming it uses epoxy resin. I would buy these kits without all the fast build options. I built a Glasair 3, took me 27 years. So expect it to take a lot longer than you would think in the beginning. Most of the aircraft I would check out at fly-in's I later found out were all professionally built. So anyone having one of these at a fly-in that says they did it in 3 or 5 years etc.. suspect a professional job. They won't own up to that since most owners put themselves down as the builder to get the repairman cert. So mum is the word on that one. I would prefer vinyl ester resin, it sets up a lot faster. Epoxy is slow to cure, so that will make the project take longer.
@nicelez5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, As a professional in the industry the first thing you need to understand is that not all fiberglass will accept Ester resins. Your also assuming you know more than the designer. The fast build kit does not cost that much more and I can well understand wanting to save money however, unless your power to your shop is free and as well as cutting into good fishing time, you will spend more money for the extra materials and time it takes to build it. People never think so but there sure are a lot of people who have done what you suggest and looking back wish they would have opted for the Fast-build. Your reasons for changing away from epoxy is unfounded. We use epoxies that are very strong with a 20 to 25 minute working time and that can be cured in less than 4 hours. We use 13 different types/brands of epoxy all for differing reasons. Last but not least, no testing I'm aware of has been done to verify the lay-up schedule you would need with vinylester... and yes I have help a few friends build there Glasairs so I am speaking from experience. One more thing, If you focus the fast build can be completed in a 16 months time.
@siroccowind7365 жыл бұрын
Well Rutan had to use Epoxy because the type of foam you can hotwire to make a wing and other structures would melt if polyester or vinyl ester were used on it. So that started the canard designs down the path of epoxy. And finding a suitable cloth for use with vinyl ester is no problem, lots of options there. I don't like the smell of epoxy, nuff said. You use what you like and I'll use what I prefer.

@@siroccowind736 What I hear you saying is, I don't care about the facts, I just want my way!! Great. But just be warned that ester products will eventually come off because they don't stick so well to epoxies. Facts are facts but like many, it doesn't matter when you want your own way. We can all be guilty of that. I hope you will research this more than just popular opinion. God bless.

Wonderful canard! No stalling,... amazing! Boring cameraman! When someone say "the other airplane", show the other airplane. When someone say "the circuit break", show the circuit break. In betweens, get out of people's face and show the subject, the airplane itself.

Screw digital gauges I am old school mechanical analog gauges all the way. I can see digital for your guidance system but not for engine. A sensor or your display goes out you are fucked !
