Back when I was getting my Private, Scott (actually Dwayne) Swing were part owners of the airport I was learning at, Phillipsburg, 3I7. Scott was building Velocity's upstairs in the shop all by hand, with these big fiberglass strand weaving machines and stacks of Styrofoam. He invented the retractable gear up there, and I was lucky enough to help a couple times. We molded a hand grip out of foam that fit my hand- I think he actually used it on the airplane he was building. In fact, and Scott probably doesn't remember this, he was trying to figure out a better cooling duct for the nose and I helped come up with the NACA duct you see on the airplane today, which still doesn't work very well.... lol Scott is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet in your life. I'm so glad they decided to purchase Velocity and turn it into the company that it is today. Great video. I can't wait to see your build videos of the turbine twin I'm sure you are getting ready to start on. Tell Scott that he needs to pressurize it.... lol

I knew a guy with a Velocity RG, N52BZ. It was an amazing plane. He told me the plane is so slick it won’t slow down, even with power at idle, so the rudders are designed so that if you push both pedals both deflect to act as an air brake.
@EatPezzzz3 жыл бұрын
It's not that they won't slow down, it's just you have to pull much more throttle than you would expect. I had a new owner ask me how I slow my Long EZ down and I said, "Plan way ahead. On my approach here, I was 10 miles out, at 2000' doing 200mph and at that point I knew I was going too fast. I pulled the power to idle and it took me 10 miles to loose 110mph (granted in a shallow decent) because I cross the numbers at 90."
@es330td3 жыл бұрын
@@EatPezzzz Wow. I did my flight training in a 172M that would not glide. I had to carry power almost to the threshold sometimes. There were airports at which I could easily land on a displaced threshold thanks to my steep glideslope, even at 500 fpm descent were I so inclined. If I cut power ten miles out at traffic pattern altitude I’d land about 9.5 miles short.

The main advantage of the canard is actually to replace the downward aerodynamic force of a conventional horizontal stabilizer at the rear of the plane with lift at the front of the plane. Planes are already fighting against gravity, so why add more downward force? The canard is more efficient and makes perfect sense. I also think they look pretty cool :)

@scott_maclean3 жыл бұрын
An advantage you didn't mention: a conventional airplane within normal C/G, the horizontal stabilator actually creates downforce - so negative lift, that the main wing has to overcome by creating more lift. Lift = drag, so this setup creates more drag (and is why, when you unload the horizontal stab by loading to aft C/G, your airplane flies faster). On the Velocity, the main wing AND the canard both produce lift, so less overall lift required for the same weight, less lift = less drag = more speed for less fuel burn. A few disadvantages: you need a lot more runway, both for takeoff and landing. The canard requires higher speeds for both - this is definitely not a STOL aircraft, so that can limit you to larger (paved) runways. Unimproved strips are also a no-go, as your main gear can throw debris up into your prop. Also, an accidental over-rotation means a prop strike, which can really ruin your day.

Physics seems to be consistent with the canard feeling less "loaded" in a turn than a conventional plane: -A normal plane banks so the horizontal component of lift turns it, with LITTLE help from the rudder. - A canard plane uses the same mechanics, but AIDED by a significant torque from differential drag. It follows that the canard makes the same horizontal turn using less bank (or a tighter turn with the same bank). Our perception of increased G depends only on the bank, so... We feel the canard lighter when both do the same turn, or equal when the canard performs a tighter curve.
@MatthijsvanDuin3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but none of this is right. G is a measure of acceleration, and the amount of horizontal acceleration required to perform a turn is TAS * turn rate * some constant(*), it does not depend on how that acceleration is accomplished nor the airplane's attitude while doing so. Moreover, putting torque on a plane (whether using a rudder or differential drag) causes it to yaw, it does not cause it to turn, which requires linear acceleration in a direction perpendicular to the flight path, not torque. This acceleration is generally provided by banking the airplane to rotate its lift vector (combined with increasing pitch to ensure the vertical component of that lift vector still opposes gravity), since this is the most efficient way to generate this acceleration and because this means that the aircraft's acceleration vector has no lateral component when viewed from within its own frame of reference, i.e. the pilot and passengers do not feel any lateral forces, which is preferred for comfort. The purpose of yawing the plane during a turn (i.e. putting torque on it, e.g. through using the rudder or any other asymmetric aerodynamic forces) is to keep it aligned with the flight path, i.e. avoid side-slip. (*) That constant is approximately 1/364 if TAS is given in knots, turn rate is given relative to standard rate (3͏°/s), and acceleration is measured in g. Total load factor in a standard rate turn is therefore sqrt( 1 + (TAS/364)² ), and the corresponding bank angle is arctan(TAS/364).
@sysfx3 жыл бұрын
Upon reading your words and re-reading mine, I could find the inconsistencies. Thank you very much for the time and trouble to answer. PS: Can you confirm if the Velocitys only deflect one winglet foil at a time? That they work as drag devices?
@MatthijsvanDuin3 жыл бұрын
@@sysfx I'm not familiar with the precise behaviour of the Velocity, however any rudder surface (regardless of where it is mounted) will create both drag and (sideways-directed) lift. In case of a conventional rudder only the lift contributes to yawing the plane, while for a winglet rudder both lift and drag apply torque to the plane. The motivation for only deflecting a winglet rudder outboard and not inboard is because outboard deflection causes lift and drag to apply torque in the same direction while inboard deflection of a winglet rudder surface causes the lift and drag it generates to cause opposing torque, hence making that rudder surface less effective in the best case and counterproductive in the worst case.
@sysfx3 жыл бұрын
@@MatthijsvanDuin Perfect. Thanks again. Would you agree that the winglet's foil lift has too short a lever arm do generate significant torque, while the winglet's drag actuates on a much larger lever arm (the length of one wing)?
@MatthijsvanDuin3 жыл бұрын
@@sysfx I don't know how far behind CG the winglets are so I wouldn't assume the arm is too short to "generate significant torque". The drag certainly has a greater arm, though of course equally important is how much drag vs how much lift is generated for a given amount of deflection, and I have no idea about that either.

Disadvantages: Take off distance- canard must create enough lift to lift the nose off the ground and bring the wing to a high angle of attack and since the canard must stall before the wing it limits CLmax. Flaps and other high lift devices are not practical for this design (get used to shallow approaches). Deep stall - icing, rain or other mods to the canard air flow can cause an unrecoverable stall (good design have reduced this risk). Aft C.G and canard down wash leads to poor wing disruption
@jackoneil39333 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review. I'm very interested in the Twin-Velocity. If you could review that would be very much appreciated. Also, on takeoff and climb the the pilot's control inputs (especially during rotation) appear rapid and aggressive, and I'm wondering if that's required for the aircraft or individual pilot technique? I'm guessing it's more pilot style as his control inputs remind me of a friend who was originally leanred in Hiller Helicopters and was later F-4 Phantom driver.
