Great video! 4501 served the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company well for 15 years. I live in Stearns and the old timers on the BSFSR and K&T recall the "big engine" fondly. If you ever get a chance to drop down to McCreary County and video, let me know.

There aren't any serious grades on this line and the track speed isn't very high. Plus the locomotive is equipped with modern style brakes. Those 5 coaches are light for that engine. And they never run with a diesel on these excursions.

@@ericemmons3040 would you say that the 4501 one is one of the oldest operating steam locomonaves in the US?
@ericemmons30402 жыл бұрын
@@rudycarlson8245 It certainly is ONE of the oldest. Southern 630 was built in 1904. Southern 154, which pulls the train known as the Three Rivers Rambler, was built in 1890, if I remember correctly. Disneyland RR #3 was built in 1894; the two engines used by Knott's Berry Farm were built in 1881 or 1882 and saw decades of service in the mountains of Colorado before being used in tourist service. There are a few other engines of that time period still operable.

722 was a freight locomotive and went green as a mate for 4501. I am curious why you say it is not a passenger locomotive when this video shows it pulling passenger cars. Whatever it may have been built for, it now pulls passenger cars and Southern passenger engines are green!

@jacobwoods87385 жыл бұрын
Polished up and washed over the winter, possibly with a new coat of graphite. In 2014 it was much darker, but by 2016 she had a bright silver graphite front, more 1970s style. Over time it has darkened down a little bit, but was cleaned and freshened for this trip. The lovely clean rods make a big difference too, something I feel many people don’t notice.

I may be wrong and this may be a stupid thing to say but I think an automatic stoker on the 4501 is a stupid idea! I mean she was built as a hand fired engine surely there are people out there they can hand fire it! The 630 is a hand fired and she was built that way! And they continue to hand fire it! I don’t see any problem with hand fiI can see the point of an automatic stoker if she was making trips over 1000 miles but if she’s just at the museum operating surely somebody can hand fire it there!
