Ahh the old cushdrive, mine had a tiny amount of rotational slop, since the rubber was still good i bodged it with a single layer of gaffa tape wound on to each tang. Smashing machine :-))
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, I think she'll be very happy with it, once she's done all her initial mods to make it easier to ride! and with the cush drive bodge, next time, try cutting a strip of old inner tube rubber and wrap it round the tang and superglue it to itself, neat and tidy and as it's rubber, it retains the 'cush' effect, whereas gaffa tape will squidge and deteriorate quite quickly!

Wheels are off, new tires on and ready to install. Should I be greasing the axles or bearings? ‘09 Thrux. Awesome video BTW. Made the job a breeze. Very precise and meticulous. Thanks!
@Moonfleet419 ай бұрын
A think layer of grease on the axle is a good idea to help with removal in the future, but the bearings should be sealed, you won't be able to re-grease them without carefully prising the seals off, which is not advisable as you can damage them, then you need a new bearing! Unless they are very old and have play in them, then they should be fine. Thanks for your kind words, glad the video helped!

Nice Delboy... I’ve recently changed the rear tire on my Fat Boy. Was very disappointed with the performance/durability of the last which was an Avon Cobra. I’ve changed to the new Michelin Commander II and after 2.500kms I can say that I am very happy with it. Looooove that copper grease! Slap it on bro!

We've opted for the Avon Road Rider, as they were the successor to the Avon Venoms Penny had on her Sportster before and she got on fine with them, so let her choose, gotta be sticker than the stock tyres these bikes come with !

Not sure if that front tyre is on the right way round, usually the pattern groove leads from the centre like on your rear tyre? But great fitting video, I've changed many a tyre with levers, knuckles to prove !
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
If the front tyre was fitted the same direction as the rear you'd end up in the first hedge, identical tyre patterns 'must' be fitted opposingly in order to give stability in corners... the reason for this is that the diagonal grooves naturally push the tyre in a forward direction if they're facing one way, or backward if facing the other as you lean into a corner... so you face them opposingly so the two pushing forces oppose each other and cancel each other out, simply tyre physics buddy... and again, both directional arrows on the tyres are correct as mounted here...

delboy - all your videos help me out so much. thank you for that. i'm taking my rear wheel off my scrambler...I did all you illustrate in this video and up to sliding the axle out...it slides out about an inch and stops. I can turn the 19mm side well but can't seem to pull the axle out further...the 22mm side is in to the point where i can still see the threads in the hole. what can i do or what tool can I use to get this axle out...please let me know your thoughts? thanks
@Moonfleet419 жыл бұрын
Hi mate....if the axle has moved out an inch, then its free to move... you need to lift the weight of the wheel off it, and 'wriggle' it out with a 'jiggle'..its not going to slide out cleanly....it will just be stuck on the lip of the spacer or something, just get stuck in and wrestle it out buddy... watch out for the spacers falling out, and obviously you've already taken the caliper off?... let me know how you get on mate... Good luck. Del.
@tsappers9 жыл бұрын
Moonfleet41 Hi - I got it off & yes the caliper was off held w/ the bungee like you did. I used my slide hammer...one quick slide/hit and axle came right out; I have a busted left hand so was hard to do as you did by holding tire up w/ one hand and pulling axle w/ wrench in other hand. Your videos are some of the best...I've used youtube to learn how to weld and fix all kinds of things & yours are the most thorough. I did the fork springs and fabrication of spacer using your video. I did the AI removal and was glad to not have to take the entire tank off w/ your method...I also did the airbox removal and because my scrambler has a carb I rejetted to accommodate AI, ARK and the arrow exhaust I added as well. I also upgraded the rear suspension...not the TEK's you used but the Progressives. I put on rethnal bars that are so much lighter then stock along with some ROX risers and headlight grill. Did the BC rear fender removal. I'll do new brake pads before I put the new Tires on the bike - I'm going with Pirreli Scorpion tires like they use on the Tiger XC. One Video you might want to think about doing would be on stripped bolts....I am pretty good w/ that stuff but most people are in real big trouble when they strip or cross thread. If you have the right tools and know what you're doing it's not so hard to overcome. my bike is a bit older than the ones you work on so more issues with things like the soft carb screws. I'll send you some pics of my bike. thanks again for the help. TJ

I've learned a lot from you - the fork spring with the spacer fabrication went well for me. I also did the AI remover. I did the air box removal with a video and put an arrow exhaust....mine is a carb so I rejetted using another guys video.

Question for you Del first of all thanks for all your videos they have been a great help to me. I have a 2007 Scrambler and I just changed the rear tire. When I tried to put it back in it seems the hub assembly is a little to wide for the frame. All the spacers and sprocket carrier are in properly. But it's all just a tad wide for the frame. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks much Everett
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Hi Everett, Im a bit stumped on that.. if as you say, all the spacers are in place, and the cush drive carrier fully pushed in.. then the wheel should slot into position between the swing arm.. it will be snug.. but not so much you can't fit it.!! without seeing it i can really advise. maybe just make sure that carrier truly is all the way in.. the rubbers will resist if they're dry.. try popping it out and spraying a little silicone spray, like GT85 over the rubbers and push it in again..!!

It is this point I cannot seem to get to line up. Been struggling with it for 20 minutes with no success ... time to go to bed and try again tomorrow.
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Make sure that the spacer tube in the centre of the wheel is aligned with the bearings, look down the hole in the wheel and make sure it's clear straight through, if the inner spacer tube has shifted, then you can lever it back in to alignment with a screwdriver... and try standing the wheel on a block so you're not lifting the weight of it with one hand and trying to line of the axle with the other.

Hello! First of all thank you very much for the help you give on this video. I only have one question, in the rear tire, do I have to put grease or something, I mean for the bearings and the axle to spin. Sorry if my English is no good. Saludos desde Mexico 🤙🏻
@Moonfleet416 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes you can apply a light coating of grease to the axle, this isn't because it spins or to help anything move, but to prevent it from corroding in place and to help remove it in the future... hope that helps, good luck!

Hi Del, just removed the front wheel from a k3 gsxr 600 to have them painted but cant get access to put the axil back through because of the shape of the stand I am using! Is there another way of propping the front up to allow me to get the axil back in again?
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
Hi Kieran, if you have a car style trolley jack, try having someone steady the bike by holding the bars...and with a folded towel to protect it...jack under the collector of the exhaust....not to much mind, and be quick, get the wheel back in and take the jack away.. Alternatively, if you put the side stand down, stand on the left of the bike, and pivot the bike over onto the stand, lifting the fork up and back as you tilt the bike toward you....then get someone to slip the axle in...... Its never an easy task on your own unless you have a front paddock stand that goes up under the bottom yoke... Hope that helps you buddy... good luck with it... Del.

did you pump up the brakes before you went out? or did you shit yourself in the first corner?
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
haha... done it so many times it's almost automatic now! A true pump out is required when you've fitted new pads, having pushed the pistons right back, but the tiny rotation you do to just slip the caliper off, can be pumped out with one squeeze of the lever and pedal... and any sensible person gives a bike a little safety check before the first ride anyway and just your brake light bulb check is enough to realign the pads!
@petergoddard196010 жыл бұрын
Nicely done mate. You've covered a lot of this before, but this is the best comprehensive guide of them all. Like Jeff, I was wondering about greasing the axle, I've always applied some general LM Grease on mine. Also would you use copper slip on the thread on the end of the axle?
@Blahde10 жыл бұрын
For me mate. I would Grease but that's just how I roll :-)
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
"Greasing Axles"?, its always a presumption since we had to do it on the 60's bikes cos they were such a poor fit, made from shite steel that would rust if they got wet, and the bearings would be washed out after 5k miles if they weren't sealed in grease....but ask yourself why you would need it on 2014?... the axle tube is high quality, tempered stainless steel, it has a very light layer if factory grease over it from initial assembly, and the bearings it sits in are now sealed and fully stainless ...! so why go troweling layers of thick grease over it so it can attract grit and dust that will threaten the bearings it sits in?.... It's not to keep water out any more as the wheel sockets that the spacers sit in have rubber seals.. in the end boys... its just old wives tales..get modern boys... we're all metric now..Lol

Hi Gary, as far as I understood it, the America and the Speedy were the same bike, just basically dressed in different clothes - one's chromey and showy, the other a bit 'darkside'... but it's an understandable caution when you're about to pull the trigger on buying a wheel, so I would check the tyre spec for both bikes first, if they are exactly the same tyres, then they will pretty much be sure to be the same wheels... can't help much further than that buddy, I know it's not a guarantee that you really need, but that's the best I can do having not owned one, so hope that helps mate...

@Moonfleet419 жыл бұрын
+Pau Rey Hi Pau, in this video i fitted the standard factory size for the Bonneville SE, (130 i think)... the Scrambler has a 5.5" rear rim, so can take a 180,..and i have always found the Avons really great for light road bikes like the Bonneville, and they are great value too..!

Dennis Quaid's fat pug They already have a coating of grease on them, and dont need to be layered up with the stuff, just a thin smear to stop them corroding...the bearings are sealed, so there's enough to help them slip through.. and if you gunk handfulls of grease all over them if just attracts grit that make other problems..!

I have a 78 Bonneville that the rear wheel was likely installed incorrectly. is it possible to see the correct configuration of the spacers? are they different for left/right side? does anyone have photos or a short video to show this explicitly?
@alexjames-music627110 жыл бұрын
Hi Del, Once again your vids have saved me a butt load of cash, as it was time for new rubber on the '82 Honda Magna, and so I set about removing the wheels myself and slinging them in the car along with the new shoes and driving down to the tyre shop saving me the best part of £50 they would have charged me for labour. However, since re-installing them, I'm a little anxious that they don't appear to be perfectly centered underneath the mudguards! They're not horribly off to one side, but I share your OCD and if it's not perfect, it bothers me, and as it's the wheels we're talking about, it bothers me more because obviously theres an element of saftey or unsafety involved. The front appears to be slightly off, and the rear is a bit more. There's even a gap between the rear hub and the casing of the final drive unit but I've been told that they're meant to be like that and have seen pictures of 3 other bikes with the gap. I put all spacers back the same way they came off, and a brief test ride (albeit in the rain which is great for test riding new tyres) didn't throw up any obvious handling issues, infact everything seemed just fine. But I'm paranoid Del, and I need someone like yourself to tell not to worry and that everythings gonna be okay. Is it normal for wheels to sometimes look a little off centre? Or have I done something foolish? I followed the manual, and layed all the bits out in the order they came off, so I know I've done it correctly but why!?
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
HI Alex. Some bikes seem to have wheels that don't look like they sit under the bike centrally...but it can often be the bike's furniture that is lop sided by design. ..i can't tell you its right unless i looked at it mate, obviously.. but you can check that both wheels are inline with each other (which is the main thing), by laying down each side of the bike and holding a straight edge along the wheels (a strip light tube is always dead straight and long enough)... hold it one side and see how far the front wheel is away....then do the other side and make sure the gap id the same... If you have truly assembled the wheels in exactly the same way as they came off, spacers all in the right place, and the chain run looks straight, then its probably an optical illusion mate...maybe just check all the fittings again and make sure the spacers are in the right order... sorry not to be more help...good luck with it mate.. Del.
@alexjames-music627110 жыл бұрын
No that's very helpful Del thank you. It's a shaft drive, so the chain is irrelevant, but obviously tricky to measure the gap between each side of the swingarm to the wheel as you'll know that you have a box frame one side and the shaft on the other and the two are entirely different shapes and often the clearance is different between the two. The tyre has a groove running around the centre and it's this groove that doesn't appear to line up with the centre of the mudguard. I suspect i'm just being paranoid, but it was the gap between the rear hub and the final drive unit that initially sparked my intruige as I didn't remember it being there before, however, if there was no gap then surely the hub would grind against the final drive casing? Another owner has told me the gap is meant to be there as he has 3 Magnas and they all have a gap, but the gap is what led me to noticing the slight offset of the wheel to the side. I'll try the straight edge. thanks Del.

Okey cokey, so I didn't have a tube long enough, :( but I measured with a ruler from the side wall of the tyre to the centre of the shock absorber on each side, and there's over an 1/8th of an inch difference on either side. The right side measures 2.5 inches, and the left side to the shock measures 2.11/16ths of an inch!!! WTF! I jacked it up, took it all apart and put it back together and yet still it remains this uneven measurement. I just don't get it. Everything is in the right place according to the exploded diagram, and I think that this must mean the front and rear are out of alignment as if you let go of the bars, the bike will pull steadily to the right. However, under normal riding conditions (hands on bars) it's really not that noticeable, and it doesn't feel like it's handling badly, if anything, it's better with the new rubber on it. But, as I've said before, I share your OCD and I'm sure that knowing this would bother you as it bothers me if it were your bike! Is there something I'm missing!? I guess it's possible that it was like this before but I didn't notice!? What else could I check?

Pretty much mate, but it would pay to check and be absolutely sure cos some of the Triumph bikes vary, things like the Bonnie America and Scrambler, have different settings to the regular Bonnevilles, so if there is a variation, it will only be minor, but it wouldn't hurt to double check in your manual buddy...

HI, I have the original tyres mounted on. I have already replaced the shock absorber (front and rear) with the progressive ones by Tecbikepat
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
OK Luca, that's good to know because you can definitely make an improvement... the original tyres on the SE were just awful, I mean really bad, they squared off in no time, handle terribly in the wet and seemed like they were as hard as wood... we had the best results with Penny's SE when we fitted Avon Road Riders, as they were far softer and more pliable especially in cold weather.... Also, on her Triumph Scrambler now we have fitted Continental Motion 2's, often referred to as Conti Motions... and they really are almost a proper sportsbike tyre, am just not sure you can get them in your sizes... so give those a thought, maybe they will work out for you Sir !

Hi Delboy + co. Thanks for all the entertaining and informative vids, great job! Quick question; I love the aesthetics of a knobbly tyre, but I'm a (very conservative) road only (so far) user. So would I be insane to put twinduros on my bonneville?
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick.. not at all, the Scrambler has twinduro boots form the factory, and i ride it like a stole it all the time...even with the infamous "Trail Wing" tyres.....they will obviously be different from regular boots, but you make a very small trade off for your desired look... on my Tiger 955i (a very heavy and cumbersome bike) i have Michelin Anakee 2 tyres, and they are outstanding....not so knobbly, but still as chunky aggressive looking tread, and stick like velcro even in the wet...(read the reviews on them), so maybe a good compromise over real full on knobblies like TKC80's...?? hope that helps mate. good luck.. Del.
@nickjcanning10 жыл бұрын
Moonfleet41 Yep. Good call. I think the Anakee 2 makes perfect sense right now (4k miles in since passing my test in August) I'll leave the twinduro's for when I get a scrambler in a few years. Keeping upright just pips style at this stage! Nice one!

@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
Hi Robb, its always advices to stick to the factory tyre spec unless you change the rims, any changes made to the sizes of tyres to the same rim will alter the profile of the carcase which will change the wear rate, and more importantly, the way they handle and grip.... i know why most people want to fit fatter tyres, its so they look bigger...but they DONT... the rim will pull the wider tyre in to the narrower beed and just curl the tread face round more...they wont look any wider, just give you actually a SMALLER tread patch due to the tighter curve...if you want ot invest a few bob in bigger rims, then there are lots of options, and a few companies that can help...you can comfortably fit a 180 in the back...but NOT on the standard rim.. you'll need at least a 5" rim, or 5.5" if possible... hope that heps mate.. good luck with it.. Del.

@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
It's a good price mate, as long as you don't have to pay for fitting... we paid about £180 for the pair fitted to 'loose' rims, remember the tyre guys make a small profit on the tyres, so they often fit them for free... so check out your local tyre dealer for the 'all in cost' and powder coating is a good option!

Del, no axle grease or anti-seeze needed on the rear axle?
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
No mate, the axle only needs a very light coat smeared over it to prevent corrosion, it's no a bearing, it doesn't rub against anything, so no need for piling grease all over it... and the axle nut wont seize on there, its a locknut and has a Nylon seal made by the threadlock...

@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
yeah, you're not wrong to question it as they do look as if they should match....but now you know, check a few bikes tyres when you see them, compare front to back and if they have a 'V' pattern shape, you'll see them opposed so each other.. and when you do, check the direction arrows, they'll bear out that its correct.

Why build up to the torque spec by torquing up 3 times gradually?
@Moonfleet4110 жыл бұрын
With any casting that has more then one bolt holding it in place, they do the job of holding the part in place kind of 'as a team'...and if you torque one bolt up dead tight while the other is still loose, then you can crack or warp the casting, This is why Cylinder heads are not only torqued up on stages, but in a specific patern too ... also as so many threads on used bikes may have been already stretched by previous owners, you can rip them out and finish the job if you're not careful... building up to full torque in 3, 5nm increments just ensures a bit of caution, and you feel the fastener seat home as you go... its just good workshop practice mate..

Hello Delboy's Garage. I have a 2016 Triumph Bonneville T120. What do you recommend between Avon Storm 3D X-M and Avon Roadrider AM26? My mechanic recommended Avon but he was not specific about the type. The official Triump tire selector (www.triumphmotorcycles.com/offers-and-services/tyre-selector) recommends the Avon 3D X-M for Triumph Bonneville T120. However, Avon Roadrider AM26 seem tad bit cheaper and also recommended by you in this video (though it was made in 2014 and for perhaps a T100?). Another unrelated question - do you think the mechanic can put the wrong tire in terms of diameter? Should I ask him to confirm that it is indeed R18 and R17 for front and rear respectively before he orders and fits it? Thanks in advance for any reply.
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I'm really not an authority on tyres, but I hold a belief that there are no 'bad' tyres on the road today... if I am in a position of making a tyre choice, I will go with what's worked for me in the past, but I'm never scared to try something new, especially if it's good value, because tyres are consumable, and a constant expense. I currently run Avon Cobra on my Harley and on my Wife's Triumph Scrambler, we run Continental Motion2... and have no complaints with either. So I can only endorse what I use and have found to be good, and that is they. Hope it helps. And as far as telling your tyre fitter the sizes, it always helps to conform what you need when making your order, rather than expecting them to know for you.
@brunhildewagner11984 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 thanks for such a detailed response. The mechanic has my motorcycle at the shop and I was assuming he would read the specs off of the tires currently on it (which are factory tires). Don't they usually? I did give him the specs as well over the phone a few days before I dropped the motorcycle off at the shop. I assumed that he cannot possibly at least get the diameter wrong given it can't be mounted? In USA, the tire diameters are an inch (25.4 mm) apart so one size up and the rim would fall through the tire and one size down the tyre won't mount - am I right about this? In any case I will call the mechanic next week again to check. I am just curious!

They're not dry, there is a light layer of grease over them, just a residue for fitting, they certainly don't need to be troweled in grease since the bearing sockets now have rubber seals to stop the water getting in... and they're sealed away from the weather!
