This video reminds me of the times when I did this work on ky Sporster. What it reminded me of is the need to buy replacement handlebar hardware in chrome or, if practical, polished stainless steel This was in the 90s. I can tell you that all of those upgrade projects almost made me giddy with excitement. This is my idea of fun. Thanks for the memory!

Del / Penny, Huge thanks from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for all the videos you've made . There's no way I would have attempted any of the work I've done on the bike without these vids and you've saved me easily a grand in HD labour. Of all the great tips, this WD-40 tip was probably the simplest, yet most helpful of them all but I'm most proud of the fact that you gave me the confidence to swap out my rear shocks for Ohlins on my 2017 Iron 883 to give my ass a break. I feel comfortable doing so much more now and for that I am indebted to you both. If you plan to be in the area sometime I'd love to extend my gratitude. Best, Mike

Another great DIY video on installing the "Chumps", Del! I have an '05 XL1200R (not 883) that I have been looking for more comfortable bars for, and I think the "Chumps" may be them. Your manipulation of the front brake line was of great help, but I am wondering how the wires went for you. I really don't want to have to add wiring and just wondered if you had any difficulty getting the stock wires to reach. Because the stock bars are wider than the "Chumps", are the stock wires able to be used easily without extensions? Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work for the rest of us out here!
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy... yes the wider bars from the R model sportster will reach the Chumps just fine, i had no issues, you just have to tidy it all up and clip them away in a neat way... the only issue is the brake pipe which you saw goes ok too.. Good luck with yours.. Del.
@tonymallia19408 жыл бұрын
looks great Dell. Can you notice any handling differences from the stock bars? Thanks
@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
+Tony Mallia Not 'Handling' as such Tony, the bike is not affected the the shape of the bars...but your hands are not rotated quite so flat as on the factory bars, they fall on a more slanted and natural angle so are a little more comfortable that way...

Dell, where can I find a 70's buckhorn, to replace the stock bars on a 2010 Sportster forty eight. Can't seem to find one for that year. Harley changes their stuff around too much, but it is what I grew up with. Triumps ,Harley's etc all about the same. very comfortable bar now for a mid sixties fellow, Thanks, Mike USA
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, good to hear from you brother... Ok, i dont think Harley make a bar to represent those old Buck Horn style bars... but i know the regular factory bars from this bike are very much like them... so have a look at the bars from the 2009 Sportster 883R, they would be about as close as you'll get i recon... see if you like them and maybe your local stealership can get you a pair... Hope that helps in some way.. good luck with it and ride safe.. del.

When this first appeared I thought 'he's gettign the same bars as Karlos!', and lo and behold they ARE Karlos's!! I loved the look if them, and indeed all of the Bilwelll bars are great. They look particularly good on the 'R'. I had that throttle lock on my sportster and I never did work out what it does. Can you explain a bit further?
@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
+pgod1960 Hi Pete, nothing much to explain about the throttle lock, its a small wheel that you can thumb round while riding and as it screws in, a little tiny shoe inside the switchblock jams against the twist grip tube and holds it still.....mate, its a Harley Davidson..it aint ever gonna be complexed now is it...lol Thanks for wathcing buddy... take care. @Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Not sure mate, the 883R has quite wide bars to start with meaning slightly longer wiring and cables, but the 48 bars are very small so it may be restrictive and the biggest concern with the modern bikes is the ABS brake pipe, it's welded to the connector block under the bottom yoke and not detachable... so very expensive to replace for a longer one should you need to! Sorry I can't be more help.

Can I ask a general question, would you change these things you do on bikes if it weren't for your channel. Or is it the love of tinkering about with bikes. I only ask cause when I look at my iron in garage everything looks perfect.
@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
+Jaimie Walsh I presume you mean when you look at your Iron in the garage everything looks perfect as factory standard?? as most people change something or other on a Sportster to stamp their own mark on it... and yes, been tinkering all my life, never leave things alone and would probably do more if I didn't have the Channel, as any job takes 4 times longer when filming it, not to mention the editing and admin time involved... the Channel has brought us many amazing friends around the world and we wouldn't be without it !
@jaimielibbi18 жыл бұрын
+Moonfleet41 if were me having just purchased my dream bike, meaning since my later teens always saying I would own a harley. what would you change. another question doing your own service does this not affect when coming to sell no stamps in book or is it not really that important. my bible is on order god there not cheap those workshop manuals. Jaimie's is my lads name by the way. my name is ian. Thanks for taking time to reply means a lot.
@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
+Jaimie Walsh Hi Ian, there is a lot of conflictng opinion on whether to do your own servicing or not....it all depends on whether you bought the bike to ride very little, then sell on for the highest price, in that case, yes, have it factory serviced and get all the stamps...but dont be too surprised when it doesnt gain you much anyway, and the servicing can cost a grand a year if you ride 10k milesa year... but if you want to actually own your bike for YOU, and own it for your own enjoyment, then why not save the huge cost of dealer servicing and add that money to any future cash pot when you sell it....remember, its £350 for interim and £500+ for a major, ...soon ads up mate..!!
@michaelcaton93588 жыл бұрын
A trick I have used for years to put handle bar grips on easily, is to spray a small amount of carb cleaner into the grip, this lets them slide on without wiggling really easily, the carb cleaner then evaporates and also vulcanises the rubber just enough to make them stick fast.....
@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
+Michael Caton Good plan Mike, that makes sense mate, ive also found the hair spray works too....it dries over night and forms a mild glue to stick stuborn grips that wont stop slipping about.

I have 2019 Iron 883 and I wonder if it has the same bars as this one you were replacing (new stock bars a little narrower, I think). I find it that I am leaning over a bit to reach the bars and I am looking for a bit more of a relaxed riding position. I also installed forward controls on the bike and this made the reach for bars a little more "difficult" in my back area (after an hour of riding). I guess it's like riding a Sportster 48? Do you think Chumps will improve the riding position for me? I am 171cm tall (or 5f7 give or take)
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Hi there, firstly congratulations on your Harley, you must be very proud! The Biltwell Chump bars are basically a 10" mini ape hanger, and will put your arms at roughly the height of your chest, and will certainly sit you back further... this bike was an 883R which has pretty wide cow-horn bars, the Iron from factory has slightly narrower bars, so just be conscious that the brake hose may not reach where it needs to on the Chump bars... it probably will, but if it doesn't, then it's very expensive to replace the brake hose on an ABS Harley as it's welded in to a splitter block. Hope that helps you, good luck with it my friend.
@Spriterom4 жыл бұрын

@@Spriterom Im just a shade over 5"11, and most Sportsters are too small for my comfort taste.. but these bars made the bike a lot more enjoyable and relaxed to ride. Does anyone know if you have to extend the brake line when installing these bars on a newer sportster and if so how much
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, it all depends on the Sportster in question, this was an 883R, which has quite wide cow horn bars, so all I had to do was bend the hard pipe part around slightly to get the angle right, so if your Sportster has quite large bars, then it should reach ok ... if it's an ABS model, you may want to check the length first before you buy the bars....

I wonder how much slack a 2019 Roadster has. I'd love some Chumps or Mini Apes as they are inexpensive however the cables and Brake/Electrical extensions are a little expensive for what they are. If I have to I might as well go with some braided stainless I guess. (An excuse to upgrade an upgrade.)
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i wondered that myself, couldn't find any information, so just bought them and fitted them, it all worked out ok with a little manipulation, had to wriggle some of the loom forwards out from under the tank, and had to bend the hard brake pipe section a little, but all ok.. ! the Chumps are only 8" rise, so not too much of a stretch for factory wiring and cables !

Enjoyed the vid. I am ready to buy the Chumps but I do have a question: The bars you installed are knurled in the riser area. New Chumps (according to Hayden Brook, Customer Service Rep Biltwell Inc) do not come knurled. Did you do this yourself?
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
No Mike.. i didnt knurl them myself... thats how they came..!!!!
@hatman2317 жыл бұрын
This is what is confusing me. I emailed Biltwell tech dept yesterday and got an email reply today stating the bars are not knurled. Today I called. They pulled a set of bars and told me Biltwell Chumps do not come knurled in the riser area. Many other pictures I have seen show them both ways and that is why I asked. Biltwell tells me the clamping force will hold the bars. I have never installed bars without the knurls.
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Ok Mike, i guess they have both kinds and that's that... mine are certainly knurled, they are still under my bench and most definitely fully knurled at two places... as you saw yourself in the video.... But if you're arent, then there is a very reliable trick ive always used when installing ape hangers.... just wrap a single layer of kitchen tin foil around the bar and trap it under the clamp....no puckering, nice and tight to the bar.. and the aluminum is so soft it works like a metal sealing gasket and gives the bar and clamp something to bite on and grip.... the bar itself is never perfectly round, and not is the machined surface of the split clamp.... but the aluminum squashes into every ripple and dent and makes a 100% contact all round... and ive fitted 18" Ape hangers this way in the past, and they never slip in the clamp..... Hope that helps.. Good luck.. Del.

I believe these are 8". Would you still have enough slack in the cables and break lines if you went with 12".
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
It depends on the model of Sportster Dave. This was an 883R and the clutch cable plus the brake hose was at its maximum stretch in this case.. so i think you would struggle with 12" bars..

Hey there, I have the same bike with dual disc brakes and the same stock bars. Do you think I'll be able to fit 11' mini apes with stock cables? I asked a few motorcycle shops and they didn't know how to make it work because of the dual discs. Plz advice. Thanks!
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Hi there, ok, if you have the same bike then the wider set factory bars give you plenty of length in the clutch cable and wiring and throttle cables, the only work around will be the brake hose... on your factory set up you will notice you have the compound hose system, which is part rubber and part metal pipe, with this video and the Chump bars, I was able to gently manipulate the metal pipe after un-clipping it, so that it gave me a little extra length to reach the bars... you can't bend the metal pipe too much, but like any brake pipe it is malleable, so try that first and if you can't make it reach, then just buy a pair of made to measure brake hoses from any good brake hose company and do a custom fit (this is, of course, provided you don't have ABS, which I presume you don't as you said you have the same bike as me).

You never wedged something into the brake lever to hold it a bit closed to protect the brake light switch ! A bit naughty that !
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
I broke the plastic tip off the end of the switch once, and the new switch was £24.. but the cut off head of a steel panel pin, glued into the end of the switch tip made it good as new for free..!

Well i didnt have to buddy.. but then my old 883R had wide bars to start with, so longer cables to begin with... i guess it depends on what exact model you have, and how big the bars are from new..?

Yes Lorna, stock cables and brake hose, you just have to bend the hard pipe part of the brake line around gently so it reaches the new bars..

I bought biltwell 12 inch mini apes and sadly biltwell stopped knurling the bars. Any advice for handlebar slippage?
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy, presuming you mean in the clamp? If so, then wrap a layer, or two, of aluminium foil around the bar so that it lies the clamp, this works pretty well to grip them and stop them moving once you clamp them up!

@@Moonfleet41 Yes I was referring to the clamp, mine is a xl 1200 c which has the speedometer as a part of the top clamp. Thanks for the advice, i will give the foil a try and let you know how it goes.

Hi del love your videos! wondering if you could chime in on an issue I'm having. I did comment on your z bar video too but thought i'd copy onto here just incase you see this one first! Basically I want to install 12 inch apes on my 2014 iron abs. I went with burlybrand on those. All good. Problem I'm having is finding a cable kit. I've gone to Harley and a few local shops and they all say that I need to buy a special " abs cable " to go with a standard cable kit (burly brand non abs 12" kit) for example. I've been told its about £300-£400 just for this abs cable too. I've tried getting details on this mysterious abs cable but noone will actually tell me what it is for. I've traced through my loom and the abs cable goes nowhere near the bars. Straight from sensor over triple tree into the loom under the tank. so I can't see what cable they're talking about!

@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
+Neil Jeffs Hi Neil, we have two Harley oil change videos - two Suzuki Bandit oil change videos and two Triumph oil change videos... how many would you like lol! What you are talking about is 'short shifting', ... doing this up the gearbox is harmless and fine, provided you are timing it right... but down the gearbox can cause damage if you get it wrong ! Better to just flick the clutch to release the drive at the moment of change, just in case the teeth catch each other... specially on a light 125 engine...
