Two-piece cover hypothesis… One cylinder cover clears the frame by mere millimetres. To get them off you need to lift them but there isn’t any room. So, Could it be that HD, in their infinite bike-building wisdom, split the cover to first create a gap to the frame big enough to clear the cover second part(collar)?

HD wanted a low seat so the frame had to be close to the heads to achieve that. The two piece design is so you can slide each one out from under the frame. There wouldn't be enough space to lift it out over the rocker arms unless the frame was higher and HD wanted a low seat.

This video literally confirms every suspicion we ever had about the agricultural nature of Harley engines, the positively medieval manufacturing techniques and Stone Age primitive build quality. If we were told that was an Eastern European ripoff from the 1950s Soviet era, we could easily believe it. But it’s actually a 2003! Truly embarrassing for any American. The first time I removed the valve covers from my Marysville built 1983 VF750F Interceptor, I was greeted by a thing of beauty. And remember, according to its initially deserved ‘chocolate cam’ reputation, this could not exactly be considered an engineering masterpiece. The cam bearings are possibly the worst design ever attempted by Honda or any Japanese maker. But compared with that thing, it’s from a different planet. And the bearing design wasn’t really the issue. Everything else is simply very well designed and engineered. And if I ever saw score marks like that in a cylinder bore, I would assume the engine had been built from the scrap bin! Simply horrendous. Yet this fool is impressed…? There’s no hope.

I'm only 14 minutes in, there are so many reinforcements to your comments, and points I could clarify that it would take me an hour to type them all up. The Buell XB that I own is very similar to the Sportster engine that I can give a lot of insight into this job. I will start with your first comments, if you are going to change the bore and modify the heads, the only parts you care about are the crank and rods. Cylinders, pistons, maybe even the heads (stock heads suck. Buell heads better), all in the bin. I think this is a 4 cam engine, limits your choices to basically Red Shift brand, might be a few other things like Screamin Chicken (Eagle) from the dealer, but third party will be way better and likely cheaper. I did a big bore on my Buell because the bone head that owned it before me managed to score the cylinders really badly in a short amount of miles. Stock cost $X, big bore cost $X+ just a little more. Sent the heads to be serviced and new valves installed because I don't own a seat cutter and some of the guides were in poor shape, was just better to let an experienced shop do that part. Also none of the wiring harness had to be cut away from the frame, the engine comes out just fine with that stuff in place. You do need some special tools if you plan to take the rocker covers and rocker boxes off while in the frame, but if the entire motor is coming out, you pretty much unbolt it and pull it out. Also, most of these fasteners should be imperial, that's why he had the snazzy new hex wrenches he had to keep showing off to advertise the free tools he just got. Sorry Del, Wiha won't have those Harley specific tools you are going to need to do some things correctly, and you do not want to buy those from the stealership. Back to the video to see the rest of the horrors

Never had one of those warp from that. That honing is rougher than Elton John's back Alley, it has probably fucked the rings rather than bed them in, hence the build up of carbon. He is a typical text book mechanic. I have worked around people like that who talk the job to the letter but have no real experience or true aptitude for the job. Well it should be sealed there. The rust is indicating another issue

Your rite mate. That's a awful lot of corrosion. This bike must have been in the salt air somewhere.

I suspect the rear cover needs to be 2/3 parts b/c of the clearance to the frame. When he rotated the upper parts to remove, would not be possible if those were a one piece unit due to clearance and the lower rocker cover shape, protruding up into the second cover.

Then I said about the frame...

@@dirtygarageguy I thinks he must have thought half your audience is deaf and couldn't hear your explanation so he felt the need to grow his readership. Mate, so frustrating listening to your remarks all the while I had the same thoughts running through my head. You, me and others with an aviation background clearly see the 'entertainment' value in Deldumb's videos, it's certainly not for the education value. Cheers from Oz

@42:15 - he mentions 20yrs, you mention miles, I'm thinking revs - a Yamaha R125 that's done 14,000 miles would show a lot more wear than a Harley doing 800rpm flat out. With all the rust on the dowels and head studs, I'd be thinking there's a good chance that moisture has got inside too, so his confidence about those big end bearings is seriously misguided. And, when he mentions the honing marks (cross hatching) as machining marks from factory, I better throw my hone away then, I'm obviously not supposed to use it lol, I'm sure it's so the oil will follow the cross hatchings rather than just flowing down a smooth barrel (yes, barrel, not jug, not pot, it's a fucking barrel) and then you get full oil coverage all the way round, rather than just in one spot.

No one was comparing anything to any other bike. Also the r125 has better coatings and rings so they're probably the same, but the finish of the yam would be better, as they don't use bricks to hone lol
