What I do is focus practice with a set goal 2-3x day. Right now I am focus on mastering spider exercise and basic chords. So far I have 4-5 chords memorized and can play them correctly and working up my spider playing speed and accuracy from 90 bpm to goal of 300 bpm.

I'm glad I find this video since I want to start my deliberate practice on guitar. I learn playing guitar when I was in Junior Highschool. At that time, I played just because I like to sing so I just learn certain keys and until now (I am in college) that's all I get (with some lame fingerings). But now I want to take it seriously. Thanks for the motivation!

What you said about guitar at school. I like to take a guitar with me too but its only about 10 minutes on the bus so I play during lunch, before school, after school, when I'm kicked out of class, when I'm waiting for class to start. Stuff like that. But its more just for fun, not really practice. I practice at home most of my time. And I totally know what you mean "not the top if my class"

@simonrourke1978

Hey Erich, only just discovered your channel and from the videos I've watched so far I'm impressed, just subscribed! Getting into a rut is something I've experienced a lot recently, deliberate practise and setting specific goals is the only way of breaking through ruts. My current objective is to learn economy picking as I've beaten alternate picking to death! After that I'll focus on improving my legato. But what is also very important is to allocate some practise time to learning and playing the music that inspires you as a guitarist, if you only ever do exercises it will become a chore rather than a thing of joy! So for me I make a list of solos/riffs/songs I want to learn and gradually tick them off month after month. I only move on to the next thing when I've recorded myself playing it. Great video and some very good points to take away, cheers.

Good video, and quite thought provoking and very applicable to every guitarist. An early point you made about what is your personal objective is really key. Obviously focussed and effective practice makes no end of difference. But here is a thought for you, given that there are subtle differences in the various steps between playing a tune adequately to a smoking world class performance, it would be an interesting topic for a future lesson - building up competence and the tricks in achieving top class performance. Best wishes from the UK - Chris Sharp

Hey Mr Sage - this is (almost) completely off topic. Been playing since April on an acoustic. IF I get 500 hours under my belt this year I figure I'm going to stick with it and will get an electric. I'm thinking either a Jimmie Vaughn Strat or a Godin LGXSA - Question is: Is the Godin too much guitar for someone at my level...?

i'm 28 and i'm very new to guitar, but i'm learning from a teacher. Anyway, my question is: is there a fast way to learn how to switch between chords fast and not make alot of mistakes? I can switch between notes easy cause it's required only 1 finger to do, but when switching between chords (3 notes+) it's very hard. I know practice make perfect and i'm still a newbie at this, but if there's a way to switch between chords fast and make less mistakes, i appreciate it if you share it. Thanks.

I remember buying your book a few years ago along with loads of other beginner/starter books, and i gotta say, in comparison with all the others i wasn't impressed. I remember that you went into no amount of detail as to finger/arm/hand/tendon mechanics and a small amount of detail as to how to practice, which are very fundamental areas that beginners need to know, otherwise they could develop debilitating habits. The reason I bought your book is because I was stuck a bad player in regards to debilitating habits that I had picked up over the years. Your book did not solve any of my playing issues, and I learned almost nothing from it. On the other hand, another book I read after yours was called "Principles of Correct Practice for Guitar"; this teaches you the necessary practice methods, and body mechanics required to play well; this book has put me on an entirely new playing course. Unfortunately (for both the author and bad guitar players), this book is poorly marketed and not easy to discover.
