Delivering Vintage Schwinns and Highlighting beautifully restored bicycles at the Museum!

In this video I take a couple bicycles to the museum for a friend. I also review several of the high end restored bikes shown there. I also do a quick tour of a vintage apartment as part of the bike museum! After that we go to Dixon Illinois to pick up a bicycle that is worth seeing! Come along for the ride.

I had a 1973 Raleigh Competition MK II that I purchased from Jake's Bike Shop in Harper Woods, MI. Reynolds 531 DB tubes throughout with a 1/2 chrome fork, Huret Jubilee components and large flange racing hubs, Weinmann center pull brakes and my first foray into the world of sew-ups. I upgraded from a Schwinn Continental in sky blue, which was a really great ride for a14 year old. My idiot brother junked the Schwinn and I sold the Raleigh about 4 years ago. That was a mistake. Appreciate your videos; many good memories. Thank you.

Great video! When you were talking about the Bianchi I was hoping you would transition to the tri colored Lemond in the background, perhaps next time 😊 In regards to the s/n on your Paramount, all I know is that after about 1952 they started using Nervex lugs (vs the hand carved BSA which were used prior and seen on the other white Paramount in the Museum. In 1959 the 3 digit s/n topped out at 949, and then they went to an alpha numeric system. With a s/n of 688 I’d guess that your frame came from maybe 1956 or 57. Which is probably what you thought. As far as the white Paramount in the shop the frame is probably pre 1952, perhaps studying the drive train would help narrow down its age better.

Paul. The new owner of the paramount did some research. He thinks its a 57 after doing his research. The metal selvedge was commonly used on linoleum (with asbestos!). Possibly around 1957-1965. Plastic laminate was in use on tables as early as 1958, at least that’s the best of my recollection. Looks normal to me. Maybe it’s time for me to remodel….

John, the Bianchi at the museum looks like late ‘50’s early 60’s vintage. Bianchi is manufacturing that color scheme on their so called Eroica (hero) bikes. Very cool museum!

I used to do a lot of kitchens. The ‘70’s kitchen is actually somewhere around 1958-1962. Those awful colors were still going as strong as Florence Henderson’s hairstyle in 1972.

That is interesting, what are the signs that this is from that earlier era? I'm actually staying in this apartment for a couple days right before the 4th of July. It's close to a town called Galena Illinois which is a very picturesque little town.

Brooks Proofide on top…Neatsfoot Oil on the inside….could release the tension bolt a tiny bit perhaps. But often old Brooks saddles sag without proper care,that one,whilst hard has kept its shape brilliantly.

A co-worker rode a Peugeot through Europe and one day parked it in the shop at work. The bike had a flat, splayed, and dried saddle. That night I washed, oiled, and Kiwi shoe polished the saddle, then packed the underside tightly with newspaper. I then wrapped the saddle with an innertube. Unwrapped the saddle in the morning. I thought nothing of it, but the co-worker was blow-away.

So much cool stuff at the Bike Museum! Love the Hetchins, the Paramount track bike, and just about everything else! Glad that the Competition found good homes. That SunTour derailleur and shifters were certainly retrofits. I did the same with my Raleigh Gran Sport of the era too. The Brooks Pro looks nice, but they are intrisically stiff. I bought one in '76 and applied a lot of neatsfoot oil at that time. I may have overdone it, but it did help. I'm still using it, so it wasn't too terrible for it.

I have a slew of solid seats that could use some work! LOL. The dirty secret is that brooks saddle is on the 57 Paramount that I brought to the museum in the beginning of the video.

I recently was given a late 80s Masi Gran Corsa. It is really mint. Shimano 105 groupset - 6 speed. Bright red frame. BioPace 105 crank. Mavic M40 front wheel w/ 105 hubs. Missing the rear wheel and cluster. Man is it ever brand new looking.

True.. but mine is certainly that. I need to find a Mavic M40 rear wheel and the freehub/cassette (6 speed). Has the original 105 groupset. The hub on front is shimano 105 .. would love to match it.. but I’ll get what I can find.

Yes please to a video on the Cinelli hubs. They're not well known, but very smart sharing the same hub, so a wheel could be used front or rear. Team mechanics must have loved that for changing wheels during races.

Your opinion, John (or anyone else). My Paramount has an incorrect Bontrager. Light-weight, but a real headache to use. I like the old period-correct Record, but before I buy I thought I would ask everyone’s opinion of what & why is their favorite.

Love the bikes and the shop of course, but wanted to comment on small towns ... yes, they are great. I live in one on the Western Slope of Colorado, Carbondale. Grew up in several large cities and would never move back to one. Saw this on CR BTW... Thank you, AGM, C-dale, CO (close enough!)

In 1973 I bought a Lilac Raleigh Comp from Champaign Cycles for $214 with a pump and extra tubular tire. It had 531 db main tubes, plastic Simplex derailleurs and Normandy hubs. Brooks saddle and I’m sure what crank. Coming from a Schwinn Connental it was a rear rocket! So I think that bike is earlier than ‘78. It has the Simplex front gear, but the back is much newer.

I've lengthen a few fork steer tubes by using a longer doner fork ( bent legs or crown) and spliced it to correct length using a tall boy aluminum stem as a jig then tig welding the gap and allowing to cool slowly. Did this process to make an unobtainable fork possible for a rare frame. The stem keeps everything in alignment and since it doesn't weld being aluminum, is easily removed. Also the joint being far enough from the crown, saves the paint or chrome from heat damage.

Interesting. The owner of the new fork lives near a frame builder. That frame builder is going to install the new crown and paint the fork to match. He's making a huge investment for sure!

Great question. Good catch. There is a frame builder not far from the gentleman's home that is getting the fork. He will have a new steer tube put in and will get it painted

Great video! Was that donor Raleigh Competion a British built frame or a Japanese one? I have had both, though I have a strong preference for the British frame. I made decals and refinished a couple of them in the early 2000s. I definitely want to see that bike museum, we occasionally get to Chicagoland to visit relatives out in the 'burbs.

Hi. I dont have a shop. I just texted you. Unfortunately you would have to search out the componants and made yourself a rear wheel. Shimano 105 usually didn't have a mavic MA40 attached to it.

Elizabeth Illinois. My roof rack is a fork mount. For modern bikes. The three bikes that I had to bring there all had smaller front axles. That's why they would not go on the rack. Thanks for watching

I would like to do a West coast tour. The midwest seemed to be a haven for cycling back in the ‘30’s & ‘40’s, but (at least to me) the West coast seemed to be the cycling center in the late ‘60’s -‘80’s. I can think of R&E Cycles, Elliot Bay (Davidson) Cycles, Cupertino Bike Shop. Would also like to visit the Marin county shops I frequented back in 1970. I’m wondering just how many of those shops & builders are still around. It’s been well over 1/2 a century. I’m sure the new Paramount is no longer in the window. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!!

In 1972 Sunset Magazine had an article about the upcoming Western region trials (or whatever they were called back then). We loaded-up the Nishiki Pro, and American Eagle Semi-Pro (still in parts) for a long road trip to Alpenrose Dairy in Portland Oregon. After arriving we spent most of the night assembling the Semi-Pro, and caught a few hours of much needed sleep in a generously donated pickup & camper. The next morning we took-off to the velodrome. It had 42 degree banking and took a few laps to get-up the courage to ride the banks. We also enjoyed sitting in the stands to watch the eliminations. There was a loud explosion while sitting in the stands. One of the riders had completed a race, leaned his bike against the track railing, and his 160PSI track silk suddenly let go. On the trip there I was reading a cycling newspaper about an “ordinary Harry Quinn 5-speed T.T. Bike… in bronze!” I’m so thankful to have been alive then and old enough to travel , but not be in Vietnam. Oh boy, was that ever close! What a time to be alive! Back at the bike shop a young lady came in to buy a bike. Back then halter tops were in vogue. I had her sit on the bike and then lean forward to check the front center length for fit. Quite often the halter tops were not a snug fit on the sides. Wasn’t trying to sneak-a-peek, it was just blatant.

As you mentioned near the end of the video that's not a '78 Competition, it's a '69 to '72 and would have come with a mostly Zeus drivetrain originally. '72 was the last year for that font on the frame graphics. The Competitons weren't listed in the catalogs those years for some reason and this particular paint combo, Lilac and Periwinkle, is considered somewhat rare so it kind of hurts to see the fork and from separated but, not my bike so....... I have a 25 inch '72 Competiton frameset in those colors I'm building up but my paint isn't that nice. I plan to keep the original paint and just clean it up the best I can. I have sourced almost all the Zeus pieces for it. IIRC they did come with the 999 Weinmanns, like almost every Raleigh from that period. Raleigh must have had a deal with Weinmann or something. I'm going with Zeus brakes just to keep everything uniform.

I know how you feel! We are somewhat sacrificing the originality of one bike and putting it on another!. The rest of the bike will be riden with a different fork. The new owner will be in a video I do soon. This frameset had the Zeus dropouts. I'm looking for a minty bike with a Zeus group. I don't have one in my collection yet!
