Agreed. Show the small upgrades one at a time. First switch to dual channel, and show us the improvement. Maybe also the conversation with Dell about how they shipped not what you ordered. Then upgrade the CPU cooler and show the performance improvement from that also?

Absolutely! I would NEVER have accepted it like that! If it's not as ordered, you should never accept it like that! Either get me the system I ordered or give me a refund, it's as simple as that! It is absolutely false advertisement and extremely misleading to customers. Just because they might ship these machines to companies that couldn't care less other than it can handle Excel or whatever does it mean it's okay to ship something that just isn't up to the specs that the customer ordered! 🤔

@@DawidDoesTechStuff Dell back when didn't offer consumer graphics cards in the enterprise systems, I think they have realized they can sell them to certain niche markets who will take the card out and use the system for other stuff or resell with another card which is actually smart of them given how hard it is to get a graphics card at the moment. Though I'm sure some will just leave the system as is as well.

I've worked in IT for years now and I've never understood why the ventilation on OEM towers is so dreadful. They make some really neat design choices with cable management, board layouts and the like, but then they get stuck in the 1990s with a single crappy rear exhaust fan, a miniscule PSU fan and almost no gaps for air to get in. When the system's an i3 and integrated graphics you can understand, but when there's a high-end gaming or workstation GPU in there - which doesn't even evacuate rearwards - it just becomes baffling.

The fine print for many pre-built's include some form of clause for 'substitutions'. You get the sum of what you ordered, not the specifics (so 1x16gb instead of 2x8gb = close enough in their world). I'd still take a poke at them for the CPU cooler though to see how they respond, that is on the dark side of dirty for a substitution given the marketing material (where custom/high performance does not equal oem boxed). You could make a case for 'inadequate' given the temps, especially if you can get it hot enough that it down clocks on a sustained load.

And for those who say, well then people won't buy their flagship ones, well their flagship ones thermal throttle too! (at least they are much more usable overall). What should be in XPS is Alienware cooling, and what should be in Alienware is hardcore stuff that keeps the CPU and GPU at 100% load and boost at all times without throttling. That's what you should get for that money. The only ones that totally nailed desktop cooling WITH quiet performance are apple at the moment. I just recently bought a "parts only" XPS off Ebay for 300$. It came minus the power supply and video card. What I got was a virtualy pristine XPS 8940 with a i9 10900, and 32 gb of memory. I put the Dell power supply I had into it (500 Watts) 89$. Then I hauled out my Dell RTX 3070, 225$ and bing bang boom a working gamer machine. Further upgrades were the NVMe drive change to a 500Gb and the swapping of the CPU cooler to the Dell "premium" one for 32$ and the addition of the VRM heat sink for 13$. So I spent @740$ to get the same thing Dawid bought 3 years later... Good buy? Maybe but for a patchwork used system it's pretty good. Great video Dawid!

I am fairly confident that they were not expecting you to open the case. So they thought they could scam you with one stick of ram and a stock cooler. They literally prey on clueless people.

@@RetroAmateur1989 Pretty much. I mean, even if people see it in passing, I'm pretty sure more than a few either simply don't know what they're looking at, or just don't bother looking further into it because they don't know something might be off. Slightly related: I was also running a stock intel cooler on my i7-6700k for about 4-5 years, until I actually started looking into some other issue, which led me to look into why my CPU was trying to cook dinner, which in turn resulted in a cpu cooler upgrade. I never actually noticed it before that point, given I never had issues with it, and stuff ran just fine.

Yes a beefy cpu cooler and dual channel 3200 low timing RAM would be sick. Overclock it!
