*_RANK Rule Summary:_* *UDIMM* ----> *2/channel* (the third DIMM slot in the channel with green release levers cannot be populated) *RDIMM quad rank* ----> *2/channel* (the third DIMM slot in the channel with green release levers cannot be populated) *RDIMM dual or single rank* ----> *3/channel* *LRDIMM* ----> *3/channel* (regardless of rank count. This is because LRDIMMs are designed to handle more rank-heavy workloads than RDIMMs) It is important to note that the rank rule must be followed when populating the memory sockets in the Dell PowerEdge R720 Server. If the rank rule is not followed, the server may not boot or performance may suffer.

im rubbish at maths, does that mean maximum 16gb modules you can install is 256gb? ( 16 x 16gb modules? ) and you cannot use the green slots? thanks

With 16GB you can install 24 DIMMs for 384GB. There are some odd 16GBs which are quad rank... those you can only install 16 DIMMs... but majority of 16GBs are dual rank so 24 DIMMs is normal. 32GBs, on the other hand, are all quad rank.... 32GB LRDIMMs you can install 24, but 32GB ECC Registered only 16 DIMMs. Hope that helps.

Can you mix and match memory? Like have 8 dimms of 8gb and 8 dimms of say 16gb?

Yes. Must be same type. Cannot mix LRDIMMs and RDIMMs. Will clock down to slowest speed modules installed.

It is not mentioned in the official documentation of The PowerEdge R720 do support ECC RDIMMs ! it supports only DD3 ECC UDIMMs, RDIMMs and LRDIMMs !

i have 24 lrdimms X 32gb installed 1600MHZ and it runs only with 1067 MHZ
