Absolutely loving the videos/ content. It's helped me no end choosing my first XPS configuration. I've just paused your video at 3:08 - I can't believe Dell's sticking budget ram sticks in a machine like this 1RX16 in a machine like this! Seriously!! Have you had a chance to get hold of the newer Tiger Lake model yet and see if Dell have been just as stingy? My other half gets 20% off from Dell so it would work out cheaper to buy 64GB RAM from them directly - but if the RAM sucks, it will be going in the bin anyway so I'll go for 16GB and upgrade myself. Also - in your expert opinion - do you think getting the 11980HK is worth it in a machine like this? Running at 45w to 65w vs 35w to 45w in the 11900H, I'm worried about thermal throttling. Do you think this beast can handle the extra power?

Thank you so much, 6th thumb up. I am planning to purchase a XPS17 here in Australia, but there are only 1TB SSD options. So I will buy a 4TB or 8TB SSD to slot into the second SSD port. A basic question for most, but I am wondering how this second SSD will appear in the 'Devices and Drives' section. Will the factory Dell drive merge with the aftermarket drive? Thanks for any advice. Much appreciated.
@dev.lockridge4 жыл бұрын
60 beats the drives will be separate devices, and you’ll need to format the drive using Disk Manager. There you can name it and add a drive letter. If you’d like, you can also make different partitions. It’s a very simple process, if you need help there’s loads of KZbin videos. In file explorer it will show up as a second drive with the letter and name that you set when you formatted it. Hope that helps!

@@dev.lockridge Thank you so much Skylatian, you are a star ⭐ I consider myself quite PC literate, but when it comes to hardware, my hands-on experience is limited. Do you have any direct experience with The Dell XPS 17? I am also considering the yet to be released Thinkpad P1 gen 3. The MacBook Pro 16 is a more remote option, as depending on several native Windows programs (MS Access, MS Publisher, Quicken for Windows, Articulate Studio), I would have to run Parallels/Windows and I don't know how practical that would be. Thanks again.

Hey, here in Japan they also offer up to 1TB and I’ve been thinking of inserting 4 or 8TB either! Did you have any success with it, because on the Dell XPS 17 page it actually say that it only supports up to 2 TB (which sounds weird) I’m planning to give it a try anyway with the 4TB next week!

I just purchased the XPS 17. Its about 2 week until I get it. I got the top range unit for less than the base model. It came out 200 bucks (Australian) less an the cheapest model after the sale they offered. I tried to get the same sale on the base but Dell wasn't coming to the party as I had the same idea you had, get the cheapest model and then buy all the RAM and SSD expansions. Great minds think alike. I did want to ask about the reboot software, I was a bit confused on your presentation on how to go about putting the new software on the new ram and ssds. I was a bit unsure of what you where where showing. I Could you just clarify the reintroduction of the software Windows instillation? For the record this is the FIRST windows machine, IN MY LIFE!, I have purchased. I have jumped from the OS/MAC system. So my knowledge of such things is tiny.
@ShainAndrews4 жыл бұрын
This is re-imaging either a new SSD or your existing SSD. Has nothing to do with RAM. First you have to make the windows installation media. www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Once that is done you need to download the drivers he identified, and save them on a folder on the removable media you created. He made a new folder to keep things organized, but not required. Power down your XPS machine. Insert removable media. Power machine on and keep tapping F12 until you see the one time boot screen. Select the removable media you inserted earlier, and let it run. Do not set up your wireless, or internet connection. Do that later. Once it boots back into Windows 10 load the drivers from your folder above. I'd do a reboot here, then connect it to the internet and run update as he showed. Dell has a full blown breakdown on re-imaging this machine, including recommended driver sequences. www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/xps-15-9500-laptop/xps-15-9500-re-image-guide/xps-15-9500-re-imaging-guide-for-windows-10?guid=guid-5b8de7b7-879f-45a4-88e0-732155904029&lang=en-us

Oh and if you are a new convert. Try running it out of the box. Personally I was surprised at the lack of bloatware. My XPS 9500 runs fine. Mid July build. I was fully prepared to re-image mine, and so far have not felt the need to do so.

@stevegeorge77734 жыл бұрын
Tony Stark I contacted Dell about the sale and did some negotiating. I’m doing, as part of being on Jobkeeper some full time study for six months. So I asked for a student discount. Initially it was 50 bucks discount but they bent a bit more and I got it a smidge cheaper. I was happy with that. So this will be my first compat, windows machine. I am a little anxious about the decision but I’ve been really disappointed with Apple for a while now. I was going to hold of for the i9, which honestly I think would be a smarter thing to have done but my machine died a couple of weeks ago. I needed to buy now. I’m just using a tablet at the moment until the laptop arrives. So I think it’s okay for you to wait if you can for the i9. When that comes out don’t be surprised to see the i7 on sale 🤒.

Had hours on phone and messages with dell support which drained me more than the unit drains its self!! Eventually the laptop failed to boot after running really hot. Nothing just black screen. They asked to repair, then told no parts and no availability date, so I demanded they have another sent out. The unit replacement has eventually been authorised and I'm told I'll get my replacement 2nd week in September. Now here is where my major issue is.. The unit unit will have orginal warranty re-aplied. Therefore I will have lost 3 months warranty for 2 weeks use. They will not change this and have only offered me 2 weeks extra warranty. Paid £2800 for it, ill never buy a dell again.
