@18 pregnant and proud the only qc problem is the trackpad. If people complain about thermals, that's only because they are using it for things it wasn't built for. If people complain about battery drain, as she said its under very high workload. Also battery life is great because on gaming laptops you max out at 3,4,5 hours on normal tasks, but on the XPS you get 8+ hours. When gaming, even though the xps isn't a gaming laptop, it lasts close to 5 hours max and the powerful gaming laptops last only 2-3 hours. Also the XPS performs better on battery life than when plugged in, and that's the whole idea. It's a thin and for it's dimensions light laptop that is made to be able to be carried around, unlike heavy and bulky gaming laptops. You guys should cut Dell some slack. The XPS has excellent build quality, not to mention one of the most color accurate screen, as was in the video (delta e value of 0.33). This machine is literally almost a MacBook, with windows running on it.

Stay away from these laptops, my work bought me a maxed out one. I have been using it for 2 months now. Trackpad doesn’t register clicks on the lower left 30% of the time. Fans pulse on and off suggesting the fan curve hysteresis isn’t setup properly. Sleep mode isn’t reliable, laptop has not woken up multiple times now. I would have been ticked off if I had wasted my own money on it. Compared to my personal MBP14 it isn’t even close in terms of experience. That laptop runs quiet, sleep always works and the trackpad is flawless.

I almost bought an XPS 13 OLED, but I went with a new MacBook Pro 14” because of all the QC issues with the XPS products. The Apple was $1000 more expensive than the Dell the way I equipped it, but it’s more powerful and I know it should last a long time.

@@conheo4 Apple computers have QC issues as well just not as widespread. I remember they had a butterfly keyboard issue where keys get stuck, another issue with the screen cable being too thin and breaking which led to screens not working properly and these are just two that I remember on top of my head. Having said that, QC issues on the XPS are way way worse.

I bought this machine 4 days ago (the 32 GB RAM version). I need to run Matlab, HFSS and Maple for my PhD. It is a beast from what I have noticed. One problem though is sometimes one of the two speakers stops working and the solution is to reset the sound from the UEFI BIOS (You find the Sound in the menu and turn it off, push Apply, then turn it back on and push Apply and then reboot). Both still work!

I use my 9710 in always on plugged in mode, and under certain heavy load situations the battery level drops as low as 94% (in my case playing MS Flight Sim), seems that the 130W PSU cannot keep up with the CPU/GPU power consumption. Wish Dell would switch to AMD for their XPS lineup as their chips are more thermal efficient. As with other XPS laptops I owned, they are fantastic machines.

Sadly, the XPS QC is so bad. And the XPS 15 STILL feels left out to dry. It's so much worse in performance, thermals, ports, and battery life... Now, imagine an XPS 17 with no QC issues, AMD CPU, Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU, and a 1080p webcam... *Sigh...* Love your videos Lisa! Just wish the Wi-Fi card wasn't soldered too! The dell XPS kept having overheating/throttling issues while performing medium workload. The XPS fan was running at full volume with just a few chrome tabs+Adobe photoshop open. Dell Battery life was about 3-5 hours with casual usage. The laptop design is beautiful, upgradeability is nice, and the screen is amazing! The XPS software is glitchy, weak battery, loud fan noise, and customer support are terrible! The MacBook Pro 14"/16" is slightly more expensive but it is so much better in every way!

Fantastic review (as always). I've had the XPS 13 with 4K touchscreen for the last few years and I love it. I recently picked up the Razer Blade 14, but thinking of returning it due to the high risk of battery bloat with Razer laptops. If Dell put higher refresh rates into these displays, I'd be tempted with an XPS 15 or XPS 17 instead of a gaming laptop. They tick a lot of boxes.

Sound: I own a late 2019 MacBook Pro and bought the Dell XPS 17 early 2020 for a back-up computer and as a media consumption device (watching MLB, KZbinTv, etc). While I like the Dell and agree with everything in Lisa's review (she reviews the newer model but the speakers seem unchanged), I do want to alert anyone in the market who adores music and sound to definitely listen to this Dell in person before buying it. The sound is mediocre, at best, and this is especially evident when comparing it to the "best in class" Apple MacBook Pros. The Dell is much behind, and I feel that the review here minimizes the difference. Of course, coming from a lousy laptop sound to this Dell may not be as jarring to the ears, but if you come from Apple-land, or from a dedicated stereo, you will be unimpressed. Just something to note if you need quality sound from your mobile device.

Solid, Sexy, amazing OLED screen. but the trackpad issue is REAL. wobbly, feels cheap. Useable, smooth 90% of the time but sometimes register weird click. You know when things work so well 90% of time and suddenly it sucks when you really need to get works done. it is just annoying. Not a dealbreaker but not pleasant to use. Good review. A question, if you or someone else reading this might know the answer: I'm considering this with the FHD rather than UHD+4k screen, so as to save battery life. The money savings is nice but not the priority. I've also read and seen on KZbin videos that the 4k doesn't do as well on the 16x10 aspect ratio screen. Do you think that FHP 17" screen would still look great? And how much better do you think the battery life might be if I forego the UHD+4k screen in favor of the FHP screen? I am considering a new Dell XPS 1710 laptop with the 11th gen i7 chip, the 3050 graphics, 32GB RAM (Maybe 16GB but 32 won't hurt, might help), 1 TB SSD storage, Windows 11, possibly buying MS Office, mostly for Outlook, and considering Webroot rather than McAfee for security. My situation is that I am a young 60 and not a gamer, though I might like to try that now and again, and do not do video or music editing. I work from home and do heavy general use, heaving online, for long hours weekdays, and a good number of hours off and on evenings and weekends. I work from home, but am setting up a mobile capability with a wifi hotspot (Not sure if I should do hotspot in my car or in my phone yet, but one of them), so I can take my home office with me whenever and wherever I wish. Though I work from my home office most of the time. Need flexibility though. I do lots of online search, I research and trade stocks, have streaming quotes and watch lists and charts up constantly during market hours. I do lots of KZbin video research reviews, but I do enjoy a KZbin movie now and again during the week. Lots emailing, some chatting and Zoom. I use Chrome, or have been, and use Outlook a great deal (Thinking of dropping that), Word from time to time, and on a rare occasion Xcel. After February 2022 I'll likely be getting the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra +5G phone (though considering an Apple iphone 13 pro max). Am intrigued by Dell Connect between the laptop and phone, though don't know much about that. I'd welcome answers to the above questions, and any thoughts or suggestions on anything else if you or anyone cares to. I'm older, and not techie, just analytical and like to be thorough. Thank you. And thumbs up for the review. Nicely done.

Greetings! I have a fully maxed out Dell XPS 17 9700 (the 2021 model) with the RTX 2060 GPU and 4k UHD Display. I also own the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. This is my daily driver. I do lots of high-res video editing on it and it performs exquisitely well. The Dell Connect & Android connectivity is great. I enjoy media consumption on this laptop. The 4k screen with the 16:10 aspect ratio does not disappoint. I use mine plugged in most times. When unplugged, the battery life will give a reasonable duration depending on what you're doing. With Wi-Fi connected or if video editing while unplugged for instance, I might get 2+hrs from it. If I'm just watching movies while unplugged, I can get 4+hrs from it. All round, it's an excellent workstation and worth every penny I paid to purchase and upgrade it (I put in 64GB RAM, and a 2nd 2TB SSD alongside the 1TB SSD it came with). I will be using mine for a long time. I definitely recommend you get the Dell XPS 9710 if you're considering it. I hope this helps. Cheers! 👍🏿

Since it's now mid February, I'll likely wait for the 2022 XPS 17 with the 12th gen Intel chip, which is supposed to be a big jump, more up in capability and I hope battery life. The XPS13 comes out with the 12th gen chip right away, but I've seen a few speculate that by April maybe May the XPS15 and XPS17 should come out with it. I'm thinking that if the battery life is that much better, then I might just get the UHD 4k screen instead of the FHD screen. I'll decide at the time. Though the prices have already begun to come down on the 11th gen ones, 1700+ for the xps17 FHD and 1900+ for the UHD now (It varies day by day but roughly that range).

@@Nate-zy5ce Since the 12th Gen chipped versions aren't too far off, then it's a good bet to wait a little longer and invest in that option. Glad you found my replies useful. Cheers! 😊🙏🏿💖

Hope that on 2022 Xps 15/17 lineup they go with 120hz screens ... Even Apple are now using them its a shame for the price to still be locked at 60. An Xps 17 - 120hz Screen - 12th Gen Intel - RTX 3060 (Or 4060 why not) would be the perfect computer for me

I bought the xps 17 with the 4K and purchased a Logitech mouse to go with it as all Trackpads are finicky on laptops.

I've been dragging a dell xps for 3 years... I can't stand using a windows computer anymore.... It has no soul and on battery, it doesn't last three hours for graphics. I dream of spilling my coffee on the keyboard and of finally being able to afford a Mac like you. I tried linux mint, it's great, but I need the adobe suite... I'm going to make myself some more coffee with the hope of an accident as soon as possible 🥰🥴🥵🤪 the only good thing about my dell is the fan that drives away the flies 🤓 not to mention the keyboard that touches and marks the screen, and the pseudo carbon fiber that disappears around the keyboard...

17 inch no USB-A port... I will stick with my 9550 with dying battery which a new good one is hard to find (I bought 2 of bad ones that barely last a hour with light load...).

I wouldn't even consider for a second a 17'" laptop that doesn't use all that available footprint to instal a number pad. Some of us are inputting numbers all the time and not having a number pad would drive us crazy.

Who in the hell needs ultra settings. People are just going wild with this gaming craze, it is just insane. and who in the hell wants to tolerate temperatures of 100 centigrate, that is 212 degrees fahrenheit and can cause dangerous burns if you touch the botoom or anywhere that heat is located. Why??

That Dell doesn't make a flagship bigscreen with a numeric pad is leaving a huge amount of money on the table... biz buyers would pump their numbers up fairly significantly... but I get copying the MacBook Pro is the brief here and that will likely never change...
