As a pilot's son, I'll tell you I have flown many trip through far rougher than this. YES it is very un nerving. It is NOT dangerous. The wings are stress loaded to %125 of the normal load expected inflight when designed and prior to being constructed . In other words, the are put past their maximum stress load and still do not fail. To say turbulence is not unsettling is a lie. So are people who tell you it's going to cause the aircraft to crash. As another poster here mentioned...imagine driving down a rough gravel road. You pass a crossroad and the car goes up and then drops. An aircraft is FAR tougher than any car and can handle the rough wind. The next trip you take, just relax and enjoy the view.. Cheers.

Flying to Honolulu from 1990 to 2006 on Delta was alwsys fun. Esp.on the L1011 Tristar. Sadly they retired those widebodies in 2001 butthe 767 was the next best thing.

I remember having to sit in the last row on TWA's L1011. All I remember from the flight was that they only had vegetarian lasagna by the time they got to us haha

The turbulence is typical on approach to the Hawaiian Islands. I've flown on the Hawaiian Air Boeing 767-300 from Phoenix to Oahu a number of times, it is my favorite aircraft mainly because of the 2-3-2 cabin layout. Unfortunately Hawaiian retired their 767 fleet and they're flying the Airbus A330 now, but I think they're planning on adding the Boeing 787 to their fleet.

Always seems to be that one area over the Pacific with the heavy turbulence, we always hit heavy turbulence on the SEA-OGG or SEA-KOA route, I remember doing the LAX-OGG route and turbulent too. I wanna fly to europe some day wondering if the Atlantic has the same problem with windy areas.
@SIHAviation8 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the Atlantic has its share of rough spots. On our flight to Tahiti we hit some good bumps crossing the equator. Same as our flight from ATL to South Africa.

At 4:58 you here the fasten seat belt sign go off signaling passing through 10,000 feet and ending the 250kts speed restriction, at that point the plane speeds off and you can hear the air run through the cabin faster and faster until you can barely here the engines anymore.
@wotan109508 жыл бұрын
That was fun! I enjoyed seeing Oahu and Maui from the air. I try to get to Hawaii every year (from New York!), but I always fly Hawaiian. Better service, better everything. The turbulence was good, luckily it didn't last long. I've never hit turbulence on my Hawaii flights until last month. My close friend was the captain (yeah, we planned it carefully); he said it would be choppy. And it was. But we made it from HNL to JFK in 8-1/2 hours!

I like Hawaiian. Having grown up in Hawaii I grew up flying them. We just always chose Delta because of the lie flat seats. Though we will definitely be flying Hawaiian once they get their new first class cabin!

wow I love your videos! I have a fear of flying but I like watching how flexible the plane is in turbulence. Makes me feel a little better about flying. I go from JFK-LAX; long flight esp for someone who hates bumps! I'm flying their BE 1A end of the month, I heard the 1A has a little bit more feet room in the box LOL
@SIHAviation9 жыл бұрын
Jenna Frederick Turbulence is nothing to worry about. It happens every day! 1A does have more a little more room because of the shape of the "hole" in the wall haha

+SIH Aviation hahah thanks good to know! I just found out that my plane is. 767-400. Is it much different than the -300?
@401sttfw99 жыл бұрын
jennveronika To put it simply, it's a longer version of the 767-300 and the wingtips are raked, they don't have winglets like the 767 in the video.

I appreciate when these videos use sub-titles to point out locations on the ground, ie maui, the Big Island etc. Also, is Honolulu airport adjacent to the military's Hickam Field?

Yes, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is next to the airport.

Hmm I've always wondered. How does the roar change into the flight sound so slowly. I mean 5 seconds after takeoff the sound is RRRRRRRRR and after a couple of minutes it transforms into a HHHHHHHHHHHHHH sound slowly.
@SIHAviation9 жыл бұрын
+Flying Miner The buzzsaw sound at takeoff just becomes less audible as the aircraft accelerates and the air rushing by overcomes that sound. It's very noticeable when you pass 10,000 feet and they accelerate past 250 knots. Then you just get the sound of the air flowing past the fuselage.

the air is thinner at higher altitudes. At sea level the fan blades have to cut through thicker air

You're right about the phones for sure-i dunno what it is-they catch good footage but you have to twist around to get it steady! I'm actually flying in First on a UA 764 this year. Pumped for the flat beds! We looked at DL and the A330 out of MSP/ATL but UA had a sweet price! I'll be doing a video of that for sure. I just can't decide on which side of the plane for the return to EWR. Any thoughts? Should I go for the Waikiki side and then nothing after that for basically the whole trip or go for the Island side to see more of Hawaii as we depart? I've switched my seats like 5 times lol! Right now I'm on the right side for both directions.
@SIHAviation8 жыл бұрын
I always go back and forth about that too. I guess it depends which view you want to have. Going to HNL, sitting on the left side gives you great views of all the islands as you descend but you don't see any of Oahu until you're flying over it. On departure, the left gives great views of Honolulu but once you're past that, there's not much else to look at.
@FBWFTW8 жыл бұрын
+SIH Aviation My general rule for all flights is right side going to the destination, left side coming home. This time I'll be on the right both sides. At least I can see the other islands a bit... Not too many right side HNL departure vids!
@SIHAviation8 жыл бұрын
DJRosco82 Yeah. I'm possibly going to HNL in a month from SEA. Never flown to Hawaii from SEA before so it would be a new experience. Most likely a Delta 739 so no lie flats for me. I miss the lie flats on the 767 from LAX!

iceman737ng You must have been real " heavy" .........Mainland Cargo-Load? As the HAL 767 300 ER Flight out of PDX usually has a 28-30 roll after spool-up and then climbs fast and high on its way to Maui. Your takeoff, Rotation and Climb-Rate was definitely labored for a 767.
@SIHAviation9 жыл бұрын
D McNamara I'm sure they load the cargo on this flight. Holds a lot more cargo than the 757s that's for sure! haha

Meant to ask too-what did you use for a camera? GoPro suction mount?
@SIHAviation8 жыл бұрын
I filmed it on my iPhone. No suction cup, just holding it there. After a while my arm starts hurting from holding the phone still and from being twisted in the seat. But, it's worth it to get videos like these!
@FBWFTW8 жыл бұрын
+SIH Aviation I've got two A330 JFK-HNL vids on my page if you want to check them out-filmed with both GoPro and my phone-wound up using my phone footage more extensively!

Tina2tu Does it help you to talk to the pilots before the flight? You might want to try that.
@Tina2tu9 жыл бұрын
Jeff d'Hedouville I will if that allow me!! I used to all the time when I was a child! I had a really bad flight and after that I was ruined . but ill try that!! Thanks
@mnkyluvr689 жыл бұрын
Tina2tu I highly recommend talking to the pilots. Ask the flight attendant right when you board, before heading to your seat. I tell them I'm terrified of flying and ask if they expect any turbulence. They are always very willing and many times will show you their map and exactly where they might be expecting turbulence. I've even had one pilot pull out his phone and show me pictures of his family and said here is my reason to make it safely to every destination. I didn't fly for 20 years after an emergency landing, chutes and all. Now I have no choice but to fly 2x a year from Hawaii to California. I'm still terrified to fly but it does help when they know they have a fearful flyer on board. The flight attendants (the majority of them) will also check on you periodically. This has been my experience with Alaska Airlines , I will only fly with them due to such positive experiences.
