The boss you've been itching to test your skills against all this time. You enter the shadowed room, the music swelling, as a familiar leitmotif hums solemnly in the background, reminding you of just what you've truly discovered, what horrors you have unleashed by entering this place, by unlocking this beast's cage. Calling to you from the darkness, a lone sound, bitcrushed and strained, as if the game itself can barely handle the noise it's producing through your speakers... "There's a snake in my boot!"

The pull string is actually genius cause it also fits into how both Jevil and Spamton are based on toys that require outside interaction to function - Jevil is a Jack-in-the-box that has a crank which needs to be turned, and Spamton is a marionette that moves by pulling strings.

Agreed; here is my stupid idea for a cowboy boss. Mike still is the main big bad, and says he canceled tons of shows but one never backs down since it is ‘his genre’s cliche’ You go out and find them and have a Scamton style encounter with them but with them quietly shooting with a six shooter ala Undyne chase in Undertale. You find their old studio and they are truly a cliche of the western genre that embraced their strings and lost themselves, sure they are stronger for it but… they lost themselves in their strings, a puppet more than Spamton that only shows themselves when you spare or kill them

Assuming the Woody Theory is true, what exactly got cancelled might've not even been an entire TV series, but rather a segment on some sort of variety show. So Toby's exact word choice in the Newsletter would still fit. Having a TV-themed chapter that uses a variety show as a set piece also makes a lot of sense, it'd allow for a variety of locations and enemies and whatnot.

@@perhapsmoose Exactly the vibe that i was getting from this video (and also the vibe that i got from someone in the steam forums making a huge and pretty cool summary of the upcoming chapters… that guy recommended this youtuber, spookydood, in his post, which is how i got here) These people make plausible assumptions regarding upcoming content, and oftentimes put a lot more thought into their work that the “normal” fanbase would do; however they genuinely believe they’re “the messiah” and that their theory is the best theory ever made and there’s no denying it. I have the exact same feeling that you have regarding these people, i really enjoy their theories and opinions but i hate watching their content because they just act SO obnoxiously its actually difficult to watch. (Also i doubt this is interesting but Steam forums guy had this to tell about his theories: “I feel that they're a bit too elaborate to waste on a relatively obscure place like this, but at the same time, I don't really like getting attention anyway. I like to think that if a Woody-like character was the secret boss, his story would be that Mike controlled him WITH the voice box, but with the mysterious man’s help(Gaster), he got it ripped out. Unfortunately, he slowly became a walking corpse, like how Kris is without they’re soul, and everyone slowly forgot him. Him missing an arm would also be a sort of reference to Toy Story 2.

Can't believe I'm saying this but I now think there's a decent chance of Chapter 3's secret boss being based on Woody from Toy Story. Good work. Just something I'd like to add to the whole Toby Fox being a trickster discussion, I agree that Toby doesn't outright lie. I think if he specifically goes out of his way to say that something is not connected to Deltarune, it should be taken at face value. For example at the end of the Spamton Sweepstakes, Toby made sure to let us know that the final live stream should not be considered canon. It should be noted however that he is capable of leaving out the full truth. On the day Chapter 2's release date was announced, Toby made it seem like they were just playing through Chapter 1 to celebrate Undertale's 6th anniversary. He didn't say anything about any news on the game but at the very end of the live stream he just dropped the announcement that Chapter 2 would be releasing in 3 days. He didn't outright lie, but he still went out of his way to surprise us. So now back to the main topic at hand, with the way Toby worded it in the email, I think it could be possible that Toby means the cowboy segment gets cancelled In-Universe. The use of the word "segment" also makes me think he could be talking about a TV segment rather than a segment of the game. This way he's not lying but he's not giving us the full truth either. This also goes with the secret boss themes of being abandoned and discarded and blah blah blah this video already went over all that. So yeah, another banger vid... Maybe the real friend inside of us was Gaster all along...?

toby fox has a history of discretely alluding to developments in his projects in update posts as far back as the undertale kickstarter updates (including "the very nature is shrouded in darkness" or calling what i assume was the true lab "A nice place with a shower, air conditioning, and a bunch of fun movies to watch"), so i don't think including some obfuscated foreshadowing is necessarily a "cawthon-esque" mischaracterization discussed in the first half of the video (although i heavily agree with the point that part of the video is making in general - in particular, acting as if independent projects must be tied to his main project in some way seems like it'd be really frustrating for a creator to be on the receiving end on). at the same time, during the development of undertale he promised a robot dating section and later unambiguously announced that was taken out and indeed there is no mettaton date in undertale, so i don't think he's like, randomly lying about cutting content tbh had been considering the possibility of secret boss woody before watching this video but i never really thought the tumblr posts were intended to hint toward it directly, just that they give the impression of "the game's lead developer thinks woody is funny and/or has woody on his mind and would therefore make a woody-themed character if he felt like it". and also I really really do hope it is woody

And I thought yoshi was the most insane candidate for the third secret boss.. I genuinely like the idea of this boss, it would make sense thematically and I mean, we are in a tv so parodies of movie characters are to be expected. Still, regardless of whether it's related to the secret boss or not, I am definitely not convinced of the "it means nothing" argument. I think it's very weird for toby to tell us that it MAY be canceled. The wording makes it seem like it's outside of his control and if that's the case I think he would wait for it to be certain that it's getting cancelled before telling us that. If it's in his control, then what's the hold up? Why the "may"? Why didn't he just say "we decided to cancel it"? Toby strikes me as the kind of person that hates disappointing and wants to be upfront. That's why when deltarune ch 1 came out he clearly said "if you are expecting to feel the same way you felt with undertale, I am sorry but I don't think I can do that." Given that, why tell us "hey, maybe you will be disappointed. or maybe not. Cowboys amirite?" I really think if this wasn't building up to something he would have just told us, "sorry, it's canceled". The "may" really makes me think there's something here.

@@JJSSBU I don't remember which video it was exactly but yeah it was a theory that since all the secret bosses are stuff that has been discarded, Yoshi being dropped off the cliff was like being discarded. I think there was also something about him being Asriel's main in Super Smashing Fighters, which would make him feel abandoned when he left for college. It wasn't taking itself too seriously but I thought it was interesting to draw attention to the possible darkners that might pop out if Super Smashing Fighters is part of the dark world.

One thing to note is that the first woody meme Toby made was in July 2017, where he claimed that “I have no idea why I made this”, which is before chapter 1 released, but Deltarune was conceptualized in 2012. We don’t know how much was conceptualized, or how much has changed (although it seems a lot has), but we know at least Jevil was conceptualized in 2012, even if he did get greatly revised. So it’s possible the chapter 3 secret boss predates the woody memes, which makes it less likely the boss is a Woody expy. Another thing is that it may be a bit redundant. Woody is a sort of doll, and having two secret bosses in a row that are dolls seems odd, even if it’s Mike who is really pulling the strings. Also, the Yellow soul is associated with cowboys and guns in Undertale with the Seventh human, but yellow mode was already used by Spamton. I doubt the same soul mode will be used twice, especially not right after each other. I do think Mike is definitely a Microphone or something similar, since not only would it fit the TV theme, but it also is common for characters names to be puns or plays on words (Jevil= Joker+Devil, Spamton= Spam mail+Mettaton, Tenna=Antenna, December Holiday, etc)

So the next boss would use the green soul and use some sort of frying pan. I could be wrong, since there is a small sample size for the bosses, but I doubt there would be two secret bosses who use a gun in a row.

Gotta be honest, a cowboy themed secret boss could have a lot possibilities. If we were to take the newsletter literally, maybe the story of the boss would be that his location in the next Dark World is threatened to be cancelled, and he's desperately trying to gain attention to his western location, even roping (haha pun) in the Delta Warriors in various activities to have even a sliver of customers. However, since he would be a secret boss, we can deny him attention, and his western location would be taken away completely. If we do humor him and play along with whatever he offers, the climactic battle could be one where we'd need to stop him from doing something very bad, akin to Spamton wanting to take Kris's soul to become a god. The secret boss may have even tricked us into completing most of the requirements for that really bad thing. After all, Spamton did say "Don't believe everything you see on [TV]" and The man's a criminal I tell ya! A criminal!" On any case, cool video and I can't wait to see more!!!

I doubt that would be the case. I think the chapter's gonna be just TV related. Maybe there will be some Kris' House stuff like Chariel, and maybe even the flowers as you said, but I think they will be used sparingly. My fan theory is that Chariel will act similar to the coffee table from Mother 3. Flowers do play the theme of being discarded, and I hope to see some form of Flowey again, but I think it's most likely that we are going to see a cancelled show instead, since it fits the theme more. However, I do think Flowey may still return because of Asgore's shop. Or maybe a golden flower will appear elsewhere. But a fun idea I have is that the 7 flowers that Asgore has will act as the big bad to a chapter, representing Pawns, just like Queen and King represent chess pieces.

But, my speculation is that because we only saw the shadow men and the forecast guys, and possibly cut cowboy sprites, we're gonna get a world that centralizes on TV tropes, and that's already a lot for one chapter. Adding stuff like kitchen appliances and items found in Kris' room or the hallway will sorta muddy the theme a bit. No saying that Toby can't wrap up everything neatly, but it just seems unlikely. Honestly, this is a possibility, but I think that there's at least one thing that's very likely at this point, it's that the secret boss will be western-themed. As you said, the way Toby says that the cowboy section *might* get cancelled and that it's the way cowboy shows go is weird. And the cowboy show getting cancelled suits the theme both Jevil and Spamton had of getting discarded before meeting *someone* and then turning crazy. So at this point, I think that this is what is most likely to happen. And who knows maybe it will also be a Woody parody, but we'll just have to wait and see for that.

I've had another theory for a while. I think the secret boss for chapter 3 will have you playing as a green soul and will be based off of Undyne the Undying.
