I have something in regards to the theory. Ignore the King, Queen, and pawns, each side has two of each piece; Two Rooks, Two Knights and Two Bishops. Who would the second of each piece be, and who would be each of these pieces on the Lightner's side?

I think another thing to add is that I believe all the dark worlds will be based off entertainment Lightners enjoy. Chapter 1 was Toys, Chapter 2 was the Internet, Chapter 3 will be TV, and if you're theory is correct I believe Chapter 4 will be about the War Hammer books (they seem to be deltarune's version of Lord of the rings) and they'll likely reference religion a lot so the Bishop theory fits, and I think Chapter 5 will be video games (maybe the one Noelle is playing).

I have theory: -We as the heart is player of game -Kris and his party as white pieces -King, Queen and other as black pieces -Secret boss(Jevil, Spamton, coming soon) as the hand that move the dark pieces -The Vessel is player of white chess -Gaster/Someone is as the player of dark chess -And Susie is white knight(in chapter 2 all is in lvl 2 and maybe susie as knight, Ralsei and Kris as King(Noel and Berdly as the pion but who the queen(mystery)) -The hand of white pieces is our heart and maybe the flower -Maybe the chapter 6 will be Asriel??(because in chapter 2 castle there is has a room that named "Asriel" so maybe Asriel is the peon that trapped in dark world so we need to help Asriel out from another dark world???) @@GigachadHGDYDBHDB What if because Mike and Spamton were apparently close before this rift, this symbolism holds more truth? Spamton promotes himself to Queen, Mike we assume is a gameshow host and probably egotistical is a Rook who tries to promote himself as king (king of TV) but ends up failing in his boss form since no piece can be promoted to a king? I know its fitting for him to want to be seen and admired by everyone. Both in a sense are rulers of mass media: internet and visual. Both acquire their positions due to unscrupulous methods to make it big.

When Noelle joins your party, if you go back to the previous room instead of proceeding Noelle will say something like "Kris, isn't that the wrong way?" And I think that's perfectly in line with the whole pawn thing since they're only allowed to go forward which would mean that since Noelle is a pawn she would naturally want to *proceed* to the next room aka go forward lol

Building on this, if you choose to do Snowgrave after backtracking, that would make Noelle YOUR pawn. This means that every enemy you freeze is moving your pawn across the board, eliminating the pieces.

18:16 "Pawns can only move forward in chess, they can only proceed" The comparison you said with the characters and pawns also reflects the dialog when checking the sliding bead toy in the hospital "the beads march grimly along their set path" just how like pawns can only move forward in chess (unless they taking another piece.) Their is also a more direct comparison between the beads on the toy and Berdly in the snowgrave route "One of the blue beads is broken and torn off" in this case Berdly being the bead that broke off.

Also, the only way Pawns can move into other lanes besides promotion is capturing another piece. The only route other than the main one is Snowgrave, where Noelle kills Berdly.

When I first read that text I mind instantly went to Kris. The beads do not break and get torn off unless they are mishandled, forcefully manipulated an awful lot. If you use your hands to move them along the ir path you're playing with them. The handler is the player, you forcefully set Kris on the wrong path. While their skin and health bar are cyan, their icon can arguably be called blue, and lancer even refers to them as a 'blue person'. The other way this can be seen is the beads representing your control over the pawns, foreshadowing them eventually breaking free and paralleling ripping OUR heart out forcefully. I haven't seen anyone talk about this possibility, it's curious.

I just got a random little idea, but like, remember all those times Ralsei tells us to “close our eyes and imagine how Susie is doing”, and then obviously talks to Kris in private while we’re gone, ending the conversations on “You see Kris, that’s why-“ or something like that? What if he’s instructing Kris? Instructing them on how to get promoted into a knight? At this point I think it’s pretty clear that Ralsei is aware of us, the player, like how he specifically names the town after us, the player, and not Kris.

I really like this theory but there is also one more thing that needs considering. If we are talking about multiple pawns here, we also need to consider one thing: Each side has TWO of Rooks, Bishops and Knights. It's possible that each of the villains of chapter 3,4,5 might either have an accomplice equal in power to them.

A rook actually means chariot, so if the chess theory is correct, it’s possible that the accomplice is the horse that provides the chariot motor power, while Mike is the charioteer. A bishop? This is a hard one. It could a crozier, but we can’t know. A knight? Not a clue.

My theory is that this means that, unlike king and queen, who you fight once at the end of the chapter, you'll fight mike and the bishop at one point in the story, and then a second time at the end, therefore the rook and bishop still *are defeated* twice without needing a second one. As for the knight, well... one is the boss of chapter 5, and the other... is kris. As we said, kris will be promoted to a knight at the end of chapter 6, and that's our second knight.

I think idea of dark world where two entities are simply fighting for power to control might be a cool idea for storytelling of the game that would fit into theory. That allows the idea of 'two equal power beings', to have their struggle be a danger AND a reason they'd protect the fountain - that's what they're fighting over! But I do think that if Chess Theory is correct it will be the bishops that end up fighting that way. As they are defined by inability to cross paths, forced to use something else to try and take each other out - lightners.

I think we can predict future secret bosses too by the different soul types. When it is was revealed that our soul turned into the 'yellow soul' I immediately thought that there's no way Toby would have the secret bosses all attack red hearts and Spamtom being the only unique one. I don't know for certain what the order could be, but the fact that yellow was the first unique soul we got it may going the inverse of undertale. Which would mean the green heart is next. The secret bosses also seem to come from the "fool" characters, such as Jevil being the Jester, and Spamtom being a salesman who became Spam. With these variables I would assume the secret boss maybe wants to "free" or "save" everyone from their slavery, like a parody of Battle Against A True Hero. Edit: After a discussion I had within the comments I think any soul order will be based on the inverse of the flowey fight rather than the undertale bosses.

Also, both of the current secret bosses are something that would normally be ignored. Jevil, the jester card, is often left out in card games, and Spamton, being spam, is often seen as a nuisance.

What about a counter theory, based on each Deltarune boss connotating the bosses of Undertale? King represents Asgore, both appearing at the end while referenced beforehand. Queen represents Toriel, an ex-queen, who both take measures to protect/make a child happy (Queen positioned to act like a mother to Noelle, or at least representing an overcontrolling mother). From that, Mike, if he is Chapter 3's boss, represents a game show host, akin to Mettaton, whom we know asks you to bring back something interesting to them in Chapter 3. Now Spamton NEO does take on MTT reference yes, but perhaps that is a foreshadow of Mike's relation to MTT or perhaps it is that the secret bosses reflect the genocide versions of UT's bosses. (Deltarune is an anagram of Undertale after all). Chapter 4's boss, whom makes sense to be at the church as the most likely location, judging a lot at the fact that considering in Chapter 3 there is no school, and so it must be Saturday, Chapter 4 would be on a Sunday. Going after Gerson's books perhaps here for a very fantasy based chapter, it would make sense for it to be a boss based after perhaps Undyne, who is a hero, wears armour and has close ties to Gerson already in Undertale. This also works back from if Spamton NEO hints to Mike, Chapter 3's secret boss may have inspiration from Undyne the Undying and so hint at the next boss of Chapter 4. One thing to bring up as well is Kris wanting to learn the piano, and perhaps there is a church organ or piano in the church and an alternative theme for Chapter 4 is music and singing (church choirs, etc). And Undyne is known to play the piano and had cut concepts from Toby when developing her as a character for being into singing and fashion. Chapter 5, perhaps follows food, and is perhaps set in QC's diner or somewhere else. A food based dark world would make sense as well, if we relate it to Papyrus, who we know cooks spaghetti, at least for other's enjoyment. While the secret boss of Chapter 4 would have to reference a genocide boss of Papyrus, for which there isn't really, it could perhaps refer to Sans instead, a fellow user of the same blue soul mode as Papyrus as the two are brothers. Now this works the same as the chess theory, with us running out of bosses post-chapter 5 to reference from Undertale, at least for a neutral route. The options then turn to Chapters 6 and 7 being based on the end bosses. Chapter 6 could very well be based on Omega Flowey, if we tied it into Asgore's Flower Shop turning into a dark world, and setting up at its end the grand finale of Chapter 7. It would also follow the theme of gardening, and perhaps hobbies on a whole, as the theme of escapism. The themes of escapism would then be: Role-playing/Toys, the Internet, TV/Movies, Music and Songs, Cooking, Gardening/Hobbies...and then finally... Chapter 7 then refers to none other than Asriel Dreemurr himself, and it is then perhaps we face the Knight, or the vessel or perhaps Ralsei (if he is as suspicious as theorists say). This I think could be from the bunker. That is my alternate theory for how the chapters could follow on and refer to. In cases it could take on some from the chess theory. MTT has a wheel moving positioned sideways, like a Rook would move. Papyrus, or Undyne, could refer to a knight from being of, or wanting to be of, the Royal Guard. Undyne as well could relate to the bishop, if you looked at the biblical concept of resurrection from her Undying form as reference. Edit note: Relating to the secret bosses possibly relating to genocide bosses and hinting to the subsequent boss, with Jevil and Queen, the best I can relate is Jevil does not use a soul mode (which future secret bosses are likely to use) the same as Toriel. Jevil and Toriel also are both the respective firsts of their games, be it the first boss and secret boss. Chapter 5's secret boss then would either relate to Chapter 6's or back to the King. Either way perhaps genocide Asgore would work, if not a proper boss, or alternatively Flowey, again not a boss. Anyways, just thought to add this as I thought of it afterwards.

I was talking about what the boss characters could be inspired by, with ones like perhaps Chapter 5's being based after him. Though I do think Toby has something specifically planned for Papyrus at one point for Hometown in a future chapter, for him to keep him from us for so long.

If the secret bosses are meant to reference Genocide bosses of Undertale, I would imagine that Jevil would be a reference to Sans, both being very jokey and knowledgeable, while Spamton NEO is of course a reference to Mettaton NEO. I don't believe that Toby is taking this route, however, as Deltarune was planned before Undertale.

But how are you supposed get in qcs diner? Obviously it’s the kitchen but it’s behind the counter and there doesent seem to be any opening to get across it, I doubt the team would have to program in a jumping animation for kris and Susie, though thinking more they can just do it once, Kris can’t jump but Susie can always pick them up, and the counter can just be there to block, because why go back? All the cutlery and dishes and other stuff is already in your pocket. And if it was in the dreemurr household, I don’t think toriel would allow her kid to take all the furniture, or maybe she would and in chapter 4 there’s entirely new furniture, though that’s too much of a stretch. In fact going further into that idea, there just can’t be anything related to the plot that doesn’t involve some or at least one of the townsfolk going into a room where a dark world was and going “hey weren’t there supposed suppose to be stuff here?” Thats just stupid. And if the ending was just some dream. The cops could still play a role, Undyne would start getting suspicious of kris and getting the sense that theyre acting fishy, maybe she could start to notice they’re little dark world adventures and to her eyes, they’re just randomly taking stuff from around town and then going into the supply closet for a while and then getting out, seemingly for no reason! And the chance of her being introduced to Ralsei and he tells her about the roaring. And yeah, the rook think is fascinating and goes with a game show vibe, and that makes me curious, maybe the next dark world is the back door of asgores flower shop ( one of the npcs says that there’s a back door and she could get in there. Hmmm wonder what’s trying to say?) like the next boss like a plant guy and the “barring path” is like plant vines and thorns and you have to cut through some of them. I’m really fascinated by how this is gonna play out in the grand scheme of things. Let’s just wait and see, I could be wrong. This feels like one big stretch. I mean the whole dark world in the living room feels like a stretch. Just a theory, I don’t think it will actually happen. EDIT: one note, I feel like it’s only tv and that only. And the barren beginning part would be the carpet and then you’d go up the tower and everything else is in the tv. Though still it seems more like a rehash of the cyber world, though I feel it could still be spiced up like some static sky with more Hollywood esque aesthetics, though I feel it’s too small, chapter 1 was a bunch of toys, chapter 2 was a few computers, music equipment, email printouts, and other computer stuff, but chapter 3 is just a single TV? I mean toriel would porabably allow that, but just one item? While it could just be some change of pace type deal but, I feel it’s not enough.

@@kingofcrap4414 Jevil and Sans would make sense, if the whole thing of secret bosses hint to next chapter bosses idea I suggested, as Sans and Queen don't really work. Could be likely though, and indeed the two things are separate: Bosses are based on Pacifist/Neutral bosses of UT, and secret bosses based on UT's Genocide bosses. As for the other point, Deltarune was not truthfully planned before Undertale, but it was conceptualised and most likely the story on whole was thought of. Toby does mention he only outlined the plot of each chapter and wrote scripts after Chapter 1, so it is likely some theme like this could have been implemented then, or before hand between 2015 and 2018. At the end of the day, it's just a theory...

I would also like to present the theory of the game moving backwards in terms of map order from UNDERTALE. We've gone from New Home/Dark Kingdom, Core/Cyber Field, Hotland+Mettaton's Game Shows/Mike being a game show host+Hell blazers making the perfect parallel for a burning city. That would leave Waterfall+True Lab/Bunker+The abyss song Onion stated recently (The dark patch is just wide enough to match the fountain opening animation's base when Kris opens one), Snowdin/Ice-E's, Ruins/Church, and Mt.Ebbott/Asgore's Shop+The Dark Mountain at the start of chapter 1. Characters also have been mirroring this trend too in a different way. You teach Susie to stop fighting, Flowey tries to teach you to fight tooth and nail to survive (And for the most part, fails). Flowey acts as a moral compass throughout the game, The King is a moral compass for who you recruit. Queen is taught not to drag the entire world into darkness to entertain, while Mettaton is taught not to Cross the barrier, or enter the light so to speak, to entertain a wider audience. Alphys and Noelle are both taught to speak their minds. With this in mind, our closest comparisons for Mike and future bosses are (with speculation added): Alphys updating her status and as a result blocking your movement/Your theory of Mike being a Rook and thus blocking progress. sheesh i made this when i was half asleep and I'm convinced just reading this since there's even more character parallels I didn't even go over in this for character subtext and the secret bosses. (Jevil parallels to Sans with being trapped in one location to do battle while having one of their most dangerous attacks gameplay-wise being a circular rotation around their preffered bullets/blaster, while Spamton and Mettaton host robotic vessels that have been weaponized for the sole purpose of killing a human while mirrorring a heart attack that goes on the offense rather Mettaton's defense.)

One thing to say about the whole 'Checkmate would've been in Chapter 1', I don't know if we actually 'mated' the king. He's in Ralsei's custody, but that might just be the equivalent of getting suffocated in chess. It might be that we'll either need to get him on our side somehow, or he'll have to die for the 'game' to 'end', whatever those two phrases mean.

We never see him, even in Chapter 2, because he's busy creating dark worlds. True to the motif of bosses being themed after chess pieces, this fits with the Knight’s behavior in chess: always just out of reach of the pawn. Why would Papyrus open Dark Worlds, though? What are his motivations? In Undertale, his core motivation is to become a part of the Royal Guard, which doesn't exist in Deltarune. Instead, he plays out his fantasy of being a Royal Guard, or more generally, A KNIGHT, with his action figures in his room. In fact, he specifies that he plays with them in Undertale to re-enact battle scenes. Just like how Kris and Susie enjoy the toys in the old classroom coming to life in the Dark World, Papyrus probably has some friends in the form of the action figures in their Darkner forms. Finally, this ties well into the overarching narrative of Deltarune and even the relationship between Deltarune and Undertale. Deltarune is supposed to be the inverse or rearranged version of Undertale. While Undertale took a deep dive into the character of Sans, I think that Deltarune will focus on Papyrus. Deltarune Sans seems rather normal, not teleporting or using any Gaster Blasters like he did in Undertale, possibility hinting at the fact that Papyrus is the one who inherited Gaster’s odd qualities, explaining how he was able to create the Dark Fountains in the first place. After all, Gaster’s Entry 17 seems to describe the Dark World. There are also seven action figures on Papyrus’s table in Undertale, perhaps reflecting the seven chapters of Deltarune. The stature of the main human protagonists seems to reflect this connection to Papyrus. Another interesting topic about Deltarune is the nature of the fountains. We all saw that the pattern of darkness pouring from them is the same as the background was when we created our vessel. Ralsei mentions that the Grand Fountain in Castle Town is made of pure darkness, which is why all darkners can live there, and it also explains why he is able to go to other dark worlds without turning into stone, since he was born from it. I think this is because unlike the impure Fountains, the Grand Fountain was created by someone special. Someone who was meant to be a pure VESSEL for darkness... (insert Hollow Knight joke here)

This is a great theory, but I don't think that Ralsei is one of the pawns, or at least the white pawns (lightners). I think so since he has a colored talk sprite, like darkners and unlike lightners. Also the trait of kindness that was attributed to Ralsei can easily be also applied to Toriel, especially with the fact that she is also at home when Kris creates a dark fountain, which means that she'll be in the dark world.

They might look similliar, but their personalities don't match, ralsei's personality is more similliar to toriel's, but other than the basic design premise nothing else matches between them. Asriel was kind of a crybaby and was popular in hometown while ralsei is actually pretty damn brave and frequently ignored by other characters. They are basically opposites.

This leaves the question: who are the souls? If we are going under the assumption that souls are determined by health bar colours, it makes sense. Kris being patience would work very well, since he waits till the end of the chapter to mess around. Susie being perseverance is the same colour, so doesn’t matter. Noelle being justice is a little bit of a stretch, but she does believe that killing darkners is justified because she gets “stronger” (even though it’s not good justice, it’s still justice). Also, she does show justice at the end of the giga queen fight, when she snaps. We have yet to see Berdly’s health bars (as halberds are commonly used to beat knights), as well as Catti’s and Jockington’s. This leaves us with Integrity, Bravery and Kindness (Keep in mind that ralsei is more “Chartreuse” than green) This one is hard! For kindness, Berdly is a bit of a stretch, Catti doesn’t make sense, but Jockington would work. Bravery and Kindness are hard ones. Bravery would work very well with Berdly, however that would mean Catti would be kindness and that doesn’t make sense. Having said that, we don’t know much about Catti’s personality yet since we have only head her talk in short lines.

With the recent Spamton sweepstakes in mind, chapter 3's boss is now considered to be a person known as Tenna as in a CRT television antenna, instead of Mike himself. I think, this actually helps your theory a lot, as antenna are constantly depicted as a radio broadscast towers. With Rooks themselves often being depicted as castle keeps (or castle towers), I cannot help to think you are on to something.

I just realized - isn't defeating a piece in chess called "capturing" it? After defeating King in Chapter 1, he is literally *captured* - as in, taken against his will and thrown in prison in Ralsei's basement. However, we never see Queen actually captured after Chapter 2, she just kind of hangs out with Lancer. Perhaps defeating Queen at the end of Chapter 2 isn't the end of her fighting against the Lightners. After all... we never really "captured" her. (Of course, ignoring the chess theory for a sec - I don't think Queen is coming back as another boss or even an enemy. She seems pretty happy with her living situation with the Lightners, so unless some unknown force persuades her to their side, she's probably not coming back. However, it is always a possibility.)

One could make a case that Castle Town is as much a... container if not prison. We're sure collecting a box full of pieces we've taken off the board, whether we kill them or befriend them. And hey, I mean, when a pawn gets to the other side of the board they can turn into a queen. That sure has some thematic potential, especially -- as people always mention -- with Noelle. Especially, weirdly enough, with all the Smash Brothers references going on. We've seen other characters get called in as, basically, assist trophies, so it wouldn't be unprecedented.

This might be a placeholder for something to be elaborated on later, in which case... Perhaps we WILL have to confront them all again. Everything about this theory is awesome man. I love it! Especially the whole climactic idea of us losing control of Kris but trying hard to befriend him. The ONLY thing I want to say that might make some of your predictions a little potentially off is that Catty and Jockington don’t have a particular sound when they speak. They have the default chat sound every npc has. HOWEVER, they do have a sprite showing their face which gives you the idea that they are kinda important (I’m only saying this because noelle and berdly have a unique sound when they speak just like every other important character in the game)

This really makes sense because when you take out a piece in chess, usually, that piece is taken to your side of the board. When you recruit enemies in Deltarune, they are recruited back to your castle town. This game is definitely based on chess using all the evidence you've uncovered. Toby fox definitely is an amazing chess player, and is also very good at fitting things like this into his game. I actually believe that Kris is the knight, because of their movement patterns. At the end of chapter 2, when Kris shuffles off of the couch to open the front door, and turn on the tv, they move in a certain way so it is easy to tell that they are the knight. In chess, the knight moves in an L shape. Kris moves upward off of the couch, which is their resting spot, to the tv, and then to the right to open the front door. Kris is definitely the knight. Here is my list for all the Deltarune chess pieces that we have so far: King- The chaos king in Deltarune. He stays in one place the entire time, and only moves when his life is threatened. He moves in a shuffling pattern, as the king in chess can only move one space at a time. Queen- The Queen in deltarune. She can move anywhere, and take out anyone she wants with the help of her chair. When she plugs a wire into an enemy to make it a werewire, the werewire basically becomes her "peon," or pawn. Pawn- Anyone that wants to work or is forced to work for the main antagonist of a chapter. Knight- Kris. It is obvious that Kris is the knight because of their shuffling L-shaped movement patterns when they take our their soul. Bishop- Either Mike, a character we have not seen yet, or Lancer. Lancer has strange movement patterns all the time, and moves all over the place. In chess, the bishop moves diagonally. Lancer's Strange diagonal movement patterns indicate that he is most likely the bishop. Still, it could be Mike. Rook- Probably a main antagonist from a chapter we haven't seen yet.

Something id also like to theorize about is that Noelle might open the chapter 4 dark fountain. In the Queen scene where she mentions how to create a dark fountain, she shows pictures of Kris, Susie and Noelle, presumably, opening dark fountains. In that same scene, she mentions that the Knight has taken its leave, and that she will simply create a new one. We already know Kris is responsible for opening the chapter 3 dark fountain, so I firmly believe that Noelle and even Susie might open their own dark fountains at some point. The possible church dark world seems like a perfect place for Noelle to open her dark fountain. Just as you said, Rudy mentions he might be able to go to the church tomorrow, and I don't think Noelle would let him go unsupervised. Maybe something that happens in chapter 3 leads her to snap and make a dark fountain in the church. This also seems likely seeing as Noelle has connections to angels, and y'know, churches, angels, yeah. And it's not like she doesn't know how to open a fountain either, it's very likely Queen explains it to her seeing as she wanted her to open one, and even then there's the possibility that someone in chapter 3 explains it to her. If this DOES end up being true, I wouldn't be surprised if Susie and maybe even Berdly (although, seeing as the snowgrave route is a thing, I'm not so sure) might open their own dark fountains in future chapters. Not sure where or why they would do that, but it seems VERY possible.

I believe that Chapter 7 will be a sort of epilogue. Anyways, bumping my theory from last video! With this info, I believe I may know where all the Dark Fountains will end up being, past, present, and future. All: Closet (Pretty much everywhere, and as close to "alone with our thoughts and those with us" as we can get, when considering the other places.) Ch1: Classroom (School, and a low-stakes introduction to the game's true mechanics and how it works.) Ch2: Computer Lab (Library, and an introduction to the concept of splitting the path.) Ch3: Kitchen/Living Room (Home, and an escalation of the stakes.) Ch4: Nave (Church, and potentially telling us to not trust everything we see.) Ch5: Festival (The world, and the biggest escalation of the stakes yet. From this point forwards, the Roaring can happen at any time.) Ch6: Garden (Asgore's shop, and the honing of the stakes to strike directly at us. the Roaring will likely happen in either the end of the last chapter as a cliffhanger or in the early stages of this chapter.) Ch7: Bunker (Historical locations, and the encouragement to us to look back and try other things as we finish up the epilogue.) Interestingly, all eight Fountain Locations represent places of learning, too. I have listed their specific teaching type, and what I believe likely to happen in each chapter in general, in parentheses.

Just a small thought that may contribute to Kris becoming the knight at the end of Chapter 5/start of Chapter 6, it takes a pawn at least 5 moves to make it to the other side of the board and be promoted. The initial double-move a pawn can make when first being played, and the 4 extra moves it makes to reach the end. That could resemble the 5 (or 6) chapters until they get promoted to be the knight.

One thing I noticed was that in the legend that Ralsei talks about in Chapter 1, the Lightners have a black silhouette and the Darkners have white/orange ones. In chess, the white side always moves first, and we can assume that the reason the player is there is because they need to seal the fountain, thus reacting to the first move. Plus we have seen alot more white in the dark world then the light one, but that's not that important. So all of that to say that the Lightners are the black side, and the Darkners are the white side.

In chapter 4 what if Rudy does die. Imagine Noelle being filled with grief she makes a dark fountain in the church. Presumably or her dad‘s funeral is going to happen. I know it’s a stretch but when you think about it in chapter 2 Noelle did hear the queen talking about how to make a dark fountain. So her making one wouldn’t be a stretch. Maybe depending on what you did in chapter 2 like if you did the snowgrave route Noel might make the dark Fountain on purpose because at the end of the route she really starts questioning if that really was a nightmare and might realize it was real. And normally she would probably do it on accident thinking nothing would happen. But hey it’s just a theory I came up with so I’m just expecting for Toby Fox Debunk this theory in chapter 4.

I feel like Gaster won't play as big a role in Deltarune as we all thought at first. My prediction is that, even though there's only one ending, there's multiple paths to the ending, proven by the differences between the Snowgrave and normal routes. Toby did this with the "one" (over 20) neutral Undertale route. You'll never overtly encounter Gaster if you just play weird routes or normal routes. But Seam mentions the shadow mantle thing, and I think the shadow crystals playing into Gaster's theme of darkness and the loose threads connecting him to the secret bosses give us our Undertale-Gaster answers (and more questions). Plus we already have a character that can fuse items for us. I predict that by defeating every single secret boss and crafting with every shadow crystal, we'll create the item needed to unlock the Gaster encounter, most likely having something to do with the bunker, and letting us fight him to get some sort of OP reward depending on our method (a weapon for fighting, like the Devilsknife and Puppetscarf, and armor for pacifist, like Jevilstail and Dealmaker). The real question is, what are going to be the rewards for the other bosses? Jevil gave us the Susie special upgrade item (Devilsknife) and Spamton gave us Ralsei's (Puppetscarf). The thornring and snowring are closer to basic upgrades for Noelle, like the spookysword for Kris and Ragger for Ralsei in chapter one. If the church part of the theory is accurate, I think we'll get a wedding ring special boss item for Noelle. Maybe Kris's special boss item will come from the knight secret boss for some pawn promotion foreshadowing and a big powerup just before the end of midgame-early endgame. I'm not sure what the Rook and pawn secret bosses will give us, but I don't think the chapter 7 secret boss can be anyone but Gaster, locked behind the requirement you defeat every other secret boss. He probably won't drop an item since he's technically a lightener and can't just turn into items like darkeners clearly can. Something I thought about while watching- the chess theory of Deltarune’s structure could apply to Undertale as well. Just like the king in ch. 1 (and in chess,) Asgore is the king that stays in his castle waiting for YOU to confront him. And even then, in his first cut scene, he moves slowly towards you, like a king does in chess. There are also 8 human souls present in Undertale (obv), which could represent the 8 pawns. The souls in Undertale can be used to open the barrier, just like how pawns can be swapped in chess at the other end of the board to become a different piece. Furthermore, several of the main characters in Undertale can also fill the role of chess pieces- Undyne and Papyrus could be the rooks, seeing as they go in a pretty linear path towards you, constantly trying to stop you, so you’re forced to ever avoid or confront them until you eventually join or defeat them. Alphys and Mettaton could represent the bishops, seeing as the comment in the vid described bishops of having movement that usually avoids direct contact but can have indirect contact- just like how Alphys’ inventions and such are mentioned heavily up to her introduction, and after meeting her you can call her and she helps you out frequently in the hot lands, and Mettaton hires monsters to kill you before going after you himself. Encounters with Mettaton specifically are a little random at times, just like moving across a board with a bishop that can only move diagonally would probably lead to random encounters (probably a stretch but still something I thought of). I wanna say Toriel is the queen, but she isn’t really “ever present” like Queens can be in chess. She is however very present in the ruins so that’s something (also she’s a literal queen…) Sans would most likely be the knight of the chess board because once again like that extremely well written comment described, the knight’s odd movements makes it always out of reach but ever present, just like how sans is always with you on your journey, just watching from a distance, and he only encounters you directly and purposely a couple of times. The mystery of the other knight is something I don’t have fully figured out yet- could be Gaster or Flowey, but I feel that’s a bit of a stretch for both. One theory I have is that if Sans is aware of alternate realities as he’s been described to be (i.e his dialogue in his fight and the “don’t forget” picture in his lab, referencing the leitmotif in Deltarune), maybe HE’S the knight in not only Undertale but also Deltarune. Maybe because of the knowledge he’s gained from his experiments with Gaster, he’s become existentially aware to an extent to where he can exist across multiple dimensions with a single conscious despite infinite beings (or something like that). Seeing as Deltarune is just Undertale with different context, swapped around, it would make sense, and be ironic almost, how in Undertale the knight (Sans) is ever present but never meddles unless you take on the worst timeline and destroy everyone (genocide route), where as in Deltarune the Knight is once again ever present but this time decides to meddle, by creating Darkworlds (possibly resulting from guilt over letting the Undertale genocide route happen?) A lot of this is prob a stretch or not developed enough but I thought it was neat :)

Naming yourself or the vessel either: QC, Sans, Undyne, Toriel, Asriel, Asgore, Papyrus, Jockington, Gerson, Catty, Bratty, *Catti*, Berdly, Rudy will all trigger dialogue about your chosen name being a coincidence. And choosing Noelle, Susie, or Kris will prompt them to say you're going to meet someone special which all three are now accounted for. As of right now, the only other ones confirmed to be involved in the Dark World are Berdly, Toriel, and possibly Undyne to due being the police chief and called to investigate Toriel's car. Something that sticks out is that Gerson is a name listed, yet in this universe, he's dead. What could all this possibly mean? At the very least, these characters might be extremely important in later chapters and should be the characters we should probably question the most. If Catti is going to the Dark World, likely Jockington will come as the two seem to be a duo.

Roulxs was gonna be given a voice byte in Chapter 2 despite not having one originally, and Jevil had to be retconned into giving you the Shadow Crystal. We’re still playing an unfinished game. Nothing’s stopping Toby from adding stuff to characters when he’ll want to use them.

First, the person we would be playing against would have to be the one pulling the strings on the other end That can't be the knight, one who created dark worlds, cause well, they are a knight, a part of the game What I mean that it's either an in world higher being (chara gaster shenanigans) or somehow they creator of the game himself. Though It's rather unlikely that there will be a final dog bossfight, it's would be in more of a metaphorical sense. As for later chapters and whole the roaring thing returning, that might all stem from Kris action to prevent Asriel from going off again. Your brother can't leave when you're both exploring the dark world, and beside being a returning character you can't deny his importance to the story. Also a religion themed dark world is the good place to explain most the prophecy before facing the knight, since the delta rune is highly connected to whatever monsters believe in.

She's even learning healing magic now, something that's mostly Ralsei's role (even though for the moment her healing is very weak). and if you do the snowgrave route, Kris seals the fountain alone.

If the last pawn really ends up being us, the player; that would mean we were following someone else's orders the whole time. In video games; objectives are made to be followed, mostly without even thinking about them. Ralsei gave us an objective from the start of chapter 1, and even though he's been secretive about his actual plans and motives, we still blindly listen to him and do as he says even if we don't trust him. (Like in BioShock 1, for example) What if we're not actually playing chess against Gaster, but rather; we're his pieces and he's playing against someone else (or is getting ready to). Maybe that's where the theme of "Your choices don't matter" fit in, because no matter what we do, we're still as much a heart on a chain as Kris is, following orders the way they are. I might be thinking too much into this but it's fun to theorize about. (Sorry if my punctuation sucks btw)

something i'd like to mention about the flower traits: noelle's menu sprite for battles is yellow. susie's is purple, and ralsei's is green, but that's cause those are their colors, even in the dark world. why is noelle's yellow? the only idea i can come up with is her yellow hair, but it isn't even yellow in the dark world, it's white! i feel like this will hint at them representing the different soul colors, with susi'e being purple, and ralsei being green. in that case, berdly's might be orange, but i feel like integrity might also fit for him, since his whole character development is that he had to learn to use integrity, to show the world who he really is, not mooch off of someone else's smarts, accept how he isn't the smartest and tell the truth (though he's still a long way's off lol). bravery also works, but i personally feel like integrity works more for his character, and he'd also have a battle menu sprite that matches his color! (also susie becomes like almost the exact same shade of purple as the perseverance soul in the dark worlds)

If this is the case, then Ralsei being a prince has more evidence as he is clearly the dark world counterpart to Asriel, who is LITERALLY the son of a king and queen. Aclaration: I don't say that in this moment they are those pieces, by now everyone is a pawn, but they are related in some way to other pieces, so when the promotion moment arrives they will be promoted to that piece. Another thing regarding Mike. In Undertale, Mettaton is constantly barring our way as we progress. I got an idea for chapter 3: Mike Rook Phone as the full name for the main antagonist, all the names coming together to make “Microphone” if all are said aloud. Mike-rook-phone, Mike-ro-phone. Mike being the name Spamton gives us, Mike Ditka, and to the mic used by hosts, Rook being a reference to the chess piece and the term of crook and con, Phone being yet another reference to Spamton, and possibly more to him calling others? It feels pretty “Toby”, a strange name that when put together makes something. The full name being references to whatever the character is connected to, and also being clever wordplay/pun.

Haven’t watched the vid but had this though watching the original chess theory vid. A small thing but on top of fallowing all the chess prices thematically main bosses have also paralleled undertale’s bosses. King is the ruthless conquer asgore was set up to be. Queen is a sort of exaggeration of Toriel self riotousness while still being sweet and mom like. All that going to say Mike will likely be MTT’s counterpart…. Of course it wasn’t just MTT who was the boss but also Alphys pretending to be you ally while secretly helping him arrange the scenario. You commented in your first vid that the most notable thing about the room is that it can only come out once the pawn in front of it is taken. What if ‘Mike’ isn’t the rook but his pawn, and the real Rook will only reveal himself after Mike is indisposed. If that’s the case it would line up well with MTT and Alphys. There it was just a star putting on a show to help his friend, who was helping the hero under false pretenses. The darker version of that is Mike being tricked or forced to fight you, while the room pretends to be your friend helping you fight him. If Mike IS the Tv I suspect this Room will be the remote. Another small thought I had is that ever pice in chess has a pawn in front of it, and so far every boss has had a pawn who directly assist them and attacks the hero’s in their stead though is also overlooked or undervalued by them, both of whom are referenced in their battle theme. For king it was lancer. A For queen it was Birdly.

Theory: Chapter 4 will take place in the church, as you suggested, and more specifically will have been opened by Alvin (Gerson's son). Why do I think this? At the end of chapter 2, we see Alvin at his father's grave, asking whether it is right for his father's hammer to do something. Also, Gerson mentions his best ideas coming from dreams, and the dark world is repeatedly referred to as a land of dreams. Combining this with the fact that the fountains are considered "Holy" and Alvin is the priest, and I think Alvin would likely know more than anyone else about the dark world. I believe that in chapter 3, we will close the fountain in the TV dark world, only to discover that we missed church, and that Rudy did as well. However, when we come into church late, we will see Alvin creating a new dark world in order to bring back his father, leading into chapter 4. Basically, since Gerson's hammer symbolically connects him to the world, and the dark fountains bring objects to life, Alvin would be hoping that the hammer being brought into a dark world would resurrect Gerson. It won't, however, and the hammer will instead end up becoming the Bishop, our villain for that chapter. This would make since as Bishops are a level above Priests, and are frequently referred to as 'father' connecting to this being Alvin's literal father. As for our chapter six and seven dark worlds, I'm fairly certain that one of them will take place in the bunker, since the double doors opening into a dark world seems to be a motif in chapters 1 and 2. I also think it's likely that a fountain will open in the mayor's house at some point but I'm less confident about that.

While, I don't necessarily buy into the theory, that might change in the coming factors, and the video is very well made too, excited to see what the coming chapters show.

I’m aware that this is a stretch, but something occurred to me about Lancer. He’s only got 3 sprites for his back. He’s almost always facing forward. Kind of like an unpromoted lancer in shogi. For the unfamiliar, the lancer can only move forward, but can move as many spaces in that direction as it wants.
