Most countries do early voting, and paper ballots (this should be a thing, as Niial pointed out)....But, they should be counted before the election, as the rest of the world does, so you can confirm on election day who is the winner...one of the downsides of not being apart of the Westminster system.

We know "why" which is exactly why mail in ballots should only be for people who are legally disabled, serving overseas both of which are easily verifiable. Then people living overseas should be allowed only if they can't help or predict not being in the US in Oct to Nov. Voting day needs to be a federal holiday. And in person voting should be allowed for 3 days so employees by law can take whatever time off works with thier schedule to vote (ie a fireman on call, ER doctor on call shouldn't have to pick between taking time off to vote and working bc they might be scheduled to work. We need to stop the expectations of same day results. The results should be published and officially declared by November 30th. This insanity has to stop.
