In a video I made a year ago, I discussed how to interact with someone experiencing a delusion. In this video, I explain how to identify a delusional thought. The main point is that logical thinking involves planning and an understanding of challenges that might occur, whereas delusional thinking involves no planning and is magical in nature.
As I stated in the video, I'm not a licensed mental health professional and the content I present is not intended to diagnose or treat any symptoms or illnesses. I'm simply drawing from my time spent working as a patient caregiver in a psychiatric hospital as well as my independent study. If you're concerned about your mental health or the mental health of someone else, contact a licensed mental health professional in your area.
In case you wanted to watch my video that discusses how to interact with someone experiencing a delusion, here's the link: • How to Talk to a Delus...

I would argue that delusional thinking can in fact have a logical flow, and a system of delusions can be rational and internally consistent. What makes it delusional is its incoherence with actual experiences

@@porteal8986 "people who do not change their worldview in the face of overwhelming evidence" That is definition of Personality Disorder, too. Someone narcissistic is not aware what NPD is, what effect it has on people around him, nor does he care. All someone abusive is deep toxic shame that is propelling them to put their image of grandiosity in the front, while everyone and everything is small and behind that big screen in front of their eyes - so they cannot see reality, only their image that covers up deep self rejection and trauma that started all this disorder in the first place.

Thank you for making this video. It is comforting that walking out the door and freaking out that I forgot my wallet and turning back to get it before I go to the store is not delusional, it is just disorganised logical thinking. Although these days thinking there is still such thing as a video store might be a little delusional.

3 years ago, I used to suffer from a mental illness, I had history symptoms of Bipolar, some symptoms of psychosis related to Schizophrenia, I had seen and seen people that were thought to be one of my kind, but instead, I talked to a bunch of strangers, I used to see and believed that Aliens exists, I was in a delusional universe, so, if a person tries to talk to me, I would not respond, I also used to have symptoms of catatonic state, I also beloved that the world was against me, that the military was after me, had an incident once where I ran outside, looked at the sky, and saw what was beloved was a military helicopter ( but, it wasn't), I talked very strangely to others, I also was paranoid, because I used to believe that everything was against me and used to hear voices in my head and seen pictures of my voices in my head, it was scary, it was not fun AT ALL! I was officially and legally been diagnosed with Bipolar by a person with an official and legal medical degree Symptoms of my mental state at that time: * delusions * hallucinations * delusional dreams and nightmare * paranoid * scared * aloof * suspiciousness * changes in mood swings * High energy * symptoms of the cationic state That is basically it, although, it was not fun at all, because I also had symptoms of ADHD, Autism, I couldn't handle all of the symptoms at once, it was too much, I was once diagnosed with PDD-NOS when I was much younger than 3 years old, I am now just identified as a person with Autism, in my teens years I was also diagnosed with ADHD, alongside with Bipolar Disorder, because I am very active! I was always different since birth, had seen things that others couldn't understand, that is because I am Autistic!

Delusional thinking is positive thinking. That is all. "I am going to pay my car off" "I am going be good at this game as long as I continue playing" "This girl will like me" "I will still be employed" All of these ended in failure for me.
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 2 жыл бұрын
I think here you're confusing delusional thinking with wishful thinking. For example, if it's delusional to think that someone could pay their car off, then one must explain how I paid off my car. Wishful thinking is delusional if the actions attempted could not possibly create the outcome desired. Therefore, hoping that you'll retain employment isn't delusional unless your approach to retain unemployment was to, perhaps, call your manager an a-hole or something. If you're experiencing consistent letdowns, then consider reviewing your actions and whether they align with your goals. Perhaps it's just that you're expecting too much in too short a time or going after goals that are a few levels above achievement right now.

Is the fact that I can remember the staff I said and recall how nonsensical it was a sign that I am deliberately manipulative?

Mate you just described the conundrum I have to deal with on a daily basis. How do you keep a level head with someone that far gone? After ten years of trying to reason with this type of person I have just given up even listening to them out of sheer exhaustion, It doesn't seem right but anything that is said is taken to the extreme like you mentioned and there is never any logical connections to the conclusions they cook up in their head. It seems impossible to make them understand that they're spewing nonsense.
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 3 ай бұрын
The important thing to recognize is that you have no obligation to make anyone understand their irrational behavior. I’m a huge fan of compassion but once you make that attempt to help and it goes unnoticed or unappreciated, then it might be time to just move on. Let’s consider an analogy: Let’s say you’re driving down the highway and see someone pulled over to the side with what appears to be a flat tire. If you stop and point out their flat tire and ask if they want help and they say “No, I don’t need help because I don’t have a flat tire,” then one of two things is true: (1) They don’t understand what a flat tire is, or (2) You don’t understand what a flat tire is. In either event, you tried to help but it didn’t solve the problem and a dead end was reached. That’s your cue to get back in your car and keep moving along on your journey.

I have been trying for a long time to figure out what is wrong, I have pretty bad anxiety. I think it came from OCD, and whenever I think now, I have extremely delusional thoughts. But I know for certain that they aren't real. Im not sure if this is a biproduct of OCD, but they will not leave. Do you know about these? (Sorry, I know you said you aren't a therapist but idk)
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. Perhaps you're experiencing cognitive distortions or intrusive thoughts? Cognitive distortions are when someone uses really skewed logic to reach conclusions. An example is catastrophizing, which is when someone assumes the absolute worst will happen even when there's a miniscule chance it'll happen. Someone who has a phobia of driving because they assume they will die in an accident is catastrophizing. Intrusive thoughts are common to OCD, and they are unwelcome and uncomfortable thoughts someone has that they feel obligated to experience. To go back to a driving phobia, an intrusive thought would be forcing yourself to think about what it'd look like if you got into a deadly car accident. If either of these sound close to what you're experiencing, definitely do some research on them and talk to a mental health professional about them if they're disrupting your life. As you noted, I'm not a counselor or therapist, but I have experienced both cognitive distortions and intrusive thoughts, and they're really uncomfortable and distracting yet they're also extremely treatable. In my opinion, these two things aren't delusions in the clinical sense; yes, they're examples of the brain perceiving things in an illogical or false way, but they're not of the same flavor as a delusion. When someone has a delusion, they believe things are as they see them and they're unable to determine that they're experiencing a delusion. An example of a delusion would be someone believing they're a world-famous singer despite having no fans. That person experiencing the delusion truly believes it and, in general, can't be convinced otherwise.

His delusions have been increasing lately and he's completely in denial about his mental health diagnoses and gets violent when the words delusions or psychosis are said. I personally have alot of stress surrounding if Im being delusional hopeful or if im being logical. The logical thinking is actually just negative thinking, and the delusional is positive thinking so Im always worried that by having hope i'm being delusional and in being negative im actually just being logical. So I can never figure out if I actually believe in myself (delusional) or if the negative side of me is actually the only one being rational. Thats what I struggle with. Does that make sense? So like lets say I wanna create a business "Positive" Me is like Ok, this is what I know how to do, I feel like its the right step to take, I believe I can do this and be successful because I know x, x and x, and Ive researched the market and I know it will be hard but eventually i'll get there Negative me is more like Sure, but how many people have said that and become nothing, or gone bankrupt, and do you really think YOURE going to be the 1 in a million to make it work and what gives you the confidence that you even can, be real and just settle so which one is the one thats actually right and which one is wrong? Like there is the reality there that... yeah it's one in a million.. so what makes me think I can? And therefore positive me must be delusional. Do you know what I mean?

What about other levels of delusion? Example. Someone believes or has a some sort of intuition their partner may be cheating. But they aren’t. Is the person.. delusional or using logic to assume something that just didn’t turn out so?
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's helpful to only consider someone delusional when they're operating from an unsubstantiated belief that could only be arrived at due to impaired brain functioning. We humans are wrong about tons of things. We constantly form beliefs that later turn out to be untrue. Usually when this happens, it's due to one of three reasons: 1) We simply didn't have sufficient information when we formed the belief, 2) We had sufficient information but we were operating from a place of skewed judgment, 3) We have a functional inability to form reliable beliefs. For someone who believes their partner is cheating (they're using their "intuition," as you mentioned above) when their partner is actually not cheating, it most likely falls into category #2 above, which is that they're operating from a place of skewed judgment. If we were to examine that person's history, we would likely find that they have learned cognitive distortions about fidelity in relationships due to prior experiences (i.e. maybe they've been cheated on before; maybe one of their parents cheated; maybe they have low self-esteem and think their partner is too good for them; etc.). That scenario is only a delusion when the person adamantly believes they're being cheated on and no evidence or information can change their view.

That's a complicated subject that scientists are still trying to pinpoint. It's generally an array of neuron deficiencies, chemical abnormalities, and/or brain structure issues. For example, former football players (American football, that is) who suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) could experience delusions as symptoms, and a major mechanism behind CTE is damage to neurons. Here's an easy way to conceptualize it: Delusions are failures of the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe of the brain is the part of the brain at the front of our skulls and it's responsible for critical thinking, reasoning, and judgment. Whatever might be the ultimate cause of delusions, it's going to be something that impairs the frontal lobe.

Thank you for clearly and succinctly explaining delusional thinking. It seems to be almost like thinking in an unmathematical way. Like for example, 1+5=22. In terms of verbal thought I am alive + God is an all knowing, seeing powerful concept = I am God. Bit of a strange analogy but just trying to put the concept into my own words
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 3 жыл бұрын
You've got the concept down. In its purest form, a delusion is expecting an outcome that's provably impossible-and persisting in that expectation even when presented with evidence that would compel the average person to recognize the impossibility.

That actually seems pretty normal. If we encounter something that freaks us out (especially bugs), it’s normal to get caught up in it and start ‘seeing’ them everywhere you look. For example, people who get bed bugs can start to think there are bugs on them even where there are none. Just our brains trying to keep us safe.

Zach Good I think you gave examples that are too obvious,I was looking for how to spot when we ourselves are delusional. When we are aiming for a goal are we just delusional? That kind of stuff
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 4 жыл бұрын
I think it all comes down to the legitimacy of the goal and the steps projected to achieve it. For example, a few years ago I set out to write a memoir. It was an extremely lofty goal (after all, I don't know anyone who's written a book). I also believed it was going to be interesting and worth reading. At the same time, I acknowledged that it would require immense effort on my part and that it was extremely unlikely my book would become a bestseller or make me rich/famous. Long story short, I wrote the book ("A Plain Black Shirt", available on Amazon), but it's only sold about 75 copies and been read by about 250 people (I gave away free paper copies and e-copies). If I had gone into my bookwriting venture believing it would be easy and make me rich - and gave no acknowledgement as to the unlikelihood of these things, and never revised my beliefs even in light of experience and new information - I would've been exhibiting some form of delusional thinking.

Zach Good I understand but you can also say that the fear of delusion has maybe stoped you from achieving higher numbers on that book,would you say that is true?
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that. I've done everything that's reasonable to maximize my success. At the present moment, I recognize that my book could still become popular someday, but if that occurs, it'll likely be at a time when I've reached a certain level of success and notoriety through my self-improvement work.

So a few things desperately need to be clarified about your statements on what constitutes a delusional because there are two parts to delusional thinking and you only talk about the first half "A delusion is a belief that is clearly false and that indicates an abnormality in the affected person’s content of thought. The false belief is not accounted for by the person’s cultural or religious background or his or her level of intelligence. *The key feature of a delusion is the degree to which the person is convinced that the belief is true. A person with a delusion will hold firmly to the belief regardless of evidence to the contrary"* -www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3016695/ So yes a person saying "oh I know people there and they're gonna be lining up to give me roles" is delusional until you call them on their bullshit and they say "shit you're right I don't know what I was thinking, guess I'm just trying to be hopeful" It's only considered a mental illness or problem if even after the somehow get to California and keep saying "no no no it's gonna happen just wait just wait" That's where the need for the symptoms to persist for a month to 3 months without any changes in order to for the diagnosis to be confirmed
@ranc1977
@ranc1977 5 ай бұрын
Better example from real life is Stockton Rush who denied safety laws and warnings about his submersible being build on faulty carbon fibre. Each dive into deep depths were confirming that he is correct - until he wasn't and then he became mass murderer. Inability to hear criticism, honest feedback - it is all delusional. Plus - we see in cats that they suffer from delusions when they see others walking to to fridge - they think it is time to eat. And they interpret sounds of cutlery as a sound for lunch. This means people are also prone to Operant Conditioning - and many of delusions could be explained through ACoA and ACE and Narcissistic abuse -however CBT and DSM are making too much money on pathologizing anything that moves to make money profit from misddiagnosis.
