You stumbled across the gem of OSR games! I played with the three brown booklets in 1974; this version is much easier to understand.

Developed on the ODD pro-boards I believe, this is a great work, and a lot of effort was put into it. At one point, it was sold as a boxed set with blackmarsh, a wonderful free setting. In the OD&D world, this is one of the better retro-clones out there. I actually found one clarification in delving deeper that was not in OSE! Groups with clerics end up asking, can the cleric re-try turning undead? Delving deeper mentions "Should a cleric fail to turn an undead monster he cannot attempt to turn that monster again until sunrise." This was perfect, and very thematic, it is now the default rule in my games.

This seems like a great companion to Old-School Essentials for bringing the past editions forward to newer players. Thanks for highlighting it; I’ll grab a copy!

Check out Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea too, does a lot of good with an OSR foundation.

Don't forget OSE - Ols school Essentials - IMHO the best and wide known OSR Retro clone these days.

OSE is probably the most popular now however it's very different from OD&D-Holmes-AD&D. It really looks like what 5E should have been. Well organized rules for everything.

I'll need to check this one out. I quite like S&W (although there are several versions and it can get a little confusing which one's which), but there's also Iron Falcon by Chris Gonnerman (who made Basic Fantasy RPG) and that's also a pretty nicely put together OD&D clone, worth taking a look at.

Yes I have! Once I have spent some more time with it I will post a review of White Box. But it is very similar, and the book itself is very nice - lots of art.

@@rangerlemure One big differentiator to me with DD vs WBFMAG is the referee advice in DD Volume II - creating a dungeon, wilderness exploration in particular stand out to me.

While 5E is like a Bugatti Veyron, OSR games have the appeal of the Jaguar E-Type. Why some people would try to emulate the feel and the performance of a Ford Model T in this day and age, is beyond me, though.

Way more people relate to a Model T than a Tesla or Jaguar.

Not sure why you're making a distinction between OSR and Oe, when Oe play/supplements/restatements/clones are and always have been part of the OSR. The thing with Oe is that there's three broad issues people have with it: 1, it lacks things more modern editions contain. 2, it's way too disorganised, like 1e but worse 3, it's hella vague and badly explained in parts. Delving Deeper is an attempt to deal with 2 and 3, and in doing so turns Oe into a self-contained whole (no need to go to chainmail to see what Slow/Haste do, or to see what the special abilities of Elves are against Orcs and Goblins, and so on) that is well explained and much better organised (tho I think in sticking to the three-booklet style of Oe sacrifices a lot, but that was a conscious decision to copy the originals). But in doing that it still lacks some of the things missing from more modern editions, or has some things that were entirely dropped from later editions. For people that want the modern editions, it's obviously lacking, but for people wanting the feel and flavour of what the original booklets said (NOT how they were played by the people who wrote them and bought them at the time! veeeeeery different things), but just want a more coherent explanation and structure, DD does a great job.

BOO thief BOO. They single-handedly ruin DnD. They are a meta class made by nerds who wanted a class that was good at “playing DnD”. They excel at everything fun in DnD: sneaking through a dungeon, avoiding traps, stabbing people from the shadows, stealing treasure, social encounters, picking locks, climbing walls…! Literally everything! And they are HINDERED if any non thieves come with them. In other words, everyone else SIT DOWN and SHUT UP while I play DnD like a hungry hungry hippo trying to eat up ALL OF THE FUN so no one else can have any.

News flash, originally you were ALL THIEVES. You all literally loot ancient tombs. You ALL got to sneak through darkness, pick locks, steal treasure, climb walls, stab people in the back, talk your way out of trouble, it was called PLAYING DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS.

There is yet another OD&D clone. Full Metal Plate Male. PS. Pity that cover of printed versions is nothing like v2 books, which are marvelous, and leave a lot of place for imagination.
