IndyCar's 1986 BUDWEISER / G.I. JOE'S 200 took place on Father's Day at Portland International Raceway. Michael Andretti was looking like he was going to cruise to his third win in five races to start the 1986 IndyCar season, but things don't always go according to plan. The finish of this one, was an IndyCar all time classic.

I was 30 months old when this race was run, so I don’t feel like it’s historic because of its age lol. These were the golden ages of many racing series, Indy, Nascar, NHRA and IROC so in many ways I envy you.

people like to say the 80s were the best motorsports eras for indycar and f1 but man I'm so glad that most cars make it to the finishline these days. I can't imagine how disappointing it would've been to go to a race and watch like 8 drivers DNF just cuz their engines couldn't handle the boost pressure or whatever.

I don't know...the chances that the kead car could suffer a mechanical problem made each race more interesting. Today, if Max is leading after the first turn, you know the race is pretty much over.
@skyhigh6089
@skyhigh6089 Жыл бұрын
Dunno about IndyCar, but the 80s were the worst years for F1. Teams fought each other about regulations, races were declared non valid for the championship and the general feeling was of hate for what the sport had turned into... for the 90s FIA had to kill Group C (Sport Prototypes) because it was threatening F1 for popularity.

Several days ago I was at the Portland E-Prix and the commentary used at the track brought up this race (the relevance being the Andretti Formula E team and Michael being there in person). The Formula E race is a classic in the making in its own right I think. A fourth of the grid making an impressive charge through the field, Nick Cassidy winning from 10th, two championship contenders battling on track for the win, almost a photo finish for the win, a healthy amount of chaos, and even a spying scandal from Penske.

People only remember Kevin Cogan for Indy '82 but he had a pretty good year in '86. Won the season opener at Phoenix, and 2nd at Indy (might have won if not for that late caution caused by Luyendyk).

The 1980s were the best IndyCar/ChampCar years for family duels. In the previous season (1985), Al Unser beat his son in the last race for the championship by a single point.

Slight point of interest, Dale Coyne's car looks so weird because it was a 1984 Lola chassis, modified to hold a small-block Chevrolet V8, instead of the turbocharged Cosworths (and one Judd) that everyone else was running that year (aside from Indy where there were several Buicks, and Al Unser Sr qualified an Ilmor test mule for the Chevrolet effort that would appear in the Penske cars in 1987... with Unser ironically winning the race in a 1986 March with a Cosworth engine).

Spectacular video! I love your channel! What a race and what a beautiful car, with a mega rear wing! Small curiosity: in Monza in 1993 I saw the GP and Michael's third place. First live race for me, last in F1 for him. When I lived in Trieste, Italy, I often went to Motovun (Croatia), Mario's hometown. It's a small thing, but it always thrilled them to know that a motoring legend was born in what was then still Italy...

They forgot to pack the yellow flag.....I nearly died laughing :). I bet Danny Sullivan gave Michael the Will Power double bird after this race. I live not too far from this track and see the PIR Grand Prix every year. This was a great era so many awesome drivers. I think I was actually at this race at 5 years old with my dad at the time. I got really sun burned and don't remember to much at the time. I am thankful we have a track in Portland besides the Trailblazers not a lot of other major sports teams in town. It was always cool to see the Indy cars. It is kind of hard to pass at the PIR track not a lot of opportunities, the course is kind of flat as a pancake. Not like Road America, Mid Ohio or Luguna Seca. I wish we had a short oval in the NW like Iowa. The leaders have such a huge advantage in this race if you don't qualify well you don't have a prayer of winning it. The finish was awesome for sure. It was actually a much better idea moving this race to September instead of June. The chance of rainy weather is really high in June compared to September.
