Hey Gang, today's video is nothing but productive. As we're beginning one face lift and ending another, we find ourselves hopping across town these days to get things done all over the place. A lot of you have asked about pricing in regards to countertops and other materials so we're going to try and include those prices when we can. This backsplash came out looking spectacular with no stress from the grouting portion so that's always a win in our book. Thanks for watching and we'll see ya in the next one!

Another great video. We did our ceilings recently and replaced our blown-in with rolled attic insulation as we pulled each one. It was a mess. We ended up using a Harbor Freight dust collection system with insulation bags from Amazon to suck out the blown-in. It worked great and now I have a new dust collection system for my woodshop in the garage. I always hated the blown-in (my wife had it installed) and I think the roll-in reduces outside noise better. Great work.

Kicking it down. That is such an obviously superior way of removing old ceiling sheet-rock it makes you wonder why you do not see it done on all home improvement videos. We noticed it was the norm to decline such to be deemed a credible and competitive offer in this area. I love that subway tile. I guess I'll be ripping out the original 1966 kitchen tile backsplash in my house as my DIY end of year project. I'll likely also update the matching tile counters to quartz, otherwise it would look odd with tile from 1966 and a modern subway tile backsplash. I live in the SF Bay area so I expect the quartz install price will be far higher than Louisiana.
@insolventsolver
@insolventsolver 2 жыл бұрын
is there a reason you're wasting perfectly fine tile? is it broken or what? I understand getting rid of fake countertops, but tile?
@donaldlee6760
@donaldlee6760 2 жыл бұрын
@@insolventsolver - thanks for bringing up a really great question. Yes, the tile is in surprisingly good shape, especially considering it's 55 y/o, so why be so "wasteful" and replace what works? It's not an ego thing. I'm a bit of a math nerd and think more like a calculator than a normal human with an ego. My two reasons are: #1 - We plan to move out after the kids leave for college and turn this house into a rental. Renters will pay more for quartz and subway tile instead of an old, "grandma" looking kitchen. Quartz and subway tile also attract more desirable renters with a higher credit score. Higher credit score = less concern about non-paying renters and I plan to rent to a family with an amazing credit score, even if I have to price the rent at slightly below market rate. I also don't want to pay 5% to 7% in home selling costs when selling a house. I'm a math nerd so I see this a decreasing my net worth by that 5% to 7% and my goal is to always increase my net worth, never decrease it. #2 is related to #1 - Before moving out, I plan to take equity out of this house via a HELOC or cash-out refi. This will become our down payment on our next house. If it costs me $10k to replace the perfectly good 55 y/o tile with modern quartz and subway tile, my home value will increase by roughly $40k to $50k (in my neighborhood, your neighborhood may vary), so a 3x or 4x return ($40k - $10k = $30k added value = 3x return on $10k). If I can increase my net worth by $3 by spending one dollar, my math nerdness compels me to take this action. So basically, the reason I want to "waste perfectly fine tile" is to increase my net worth.

I use a die cutter that takes a 90 degree "bite" out for trims like that and sometimes a second bite for a bit of clearance. When you bend it do it just one time to the angle you need and try doing it on a flat surface so you don't have to adjust it back into plane(which would further risk weakening/breaking it). *edit made by crane tools

@@StudPack I'd also put the edge on a flat surface and put a tile in there so the bend is straight and correctly positioned. You broke the piece trying to flatten it out, wouldn't happen if it was laying on a flat surface and you bent it along that surface. But I still do mitered corners and file the ends to make them smooth and not sharp.

@TheBUGZNTA
@TheBUGZNTA 2 жыл бұрын
Name checks out. Should really only use those to keep the tiles level not make them level. Once you put the leveler on and its not already level you are just creating a void behind the tile.
@lazy5877
@lazy5877 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBUGZNTA I'm not native English speaker, but I hope you can understand what I say. You don't make much void if you squish the tile and then use leveling "needle screws", even if it lifts it up by 1mm or so, there is enough glue to fill those voids, there will be some suction from borders around of the tile, but from my experience it's not a problem, unless you use trowel with groves that are not tall enough or glue is too dry. And of course you should use leveler and tap the tiles. Those needles are not to level, but to avoid lipages.

What happened to that fancy tile snapper from a few months ago? Did the sliding table tile saw win out in the long run? Good work guys! Nice job on a 2 LA attic day!

I'm guessing if you first heat up that outer trim piece for the tile, then you could bend it into the shape you want and would be able to use it. The trick would probly be then to not damage it while heating it up, or cause any discoloration. Question is then, is it worth all the effort after everything is said and done?

I’m saying yes, as doing this trick (w/o heat for post framing building and metal trim, roofing, wainscot exterior accents, etc…) looks great when do a bend “miter” then cutting b/c everything looks like it flows and not having a “break”…if that makes sense. It’s that “attention to detail thing” that ppl will “notice”😉 Cheers😊

So what ever happened to the parsonage with the rotted out floor joists? You posted a vid of the initial inspection and closet repair early in the year, then a vid in June of ripping up the floor and removing joists in the main room, but nothing since… What happened to that project?
