Saw a photo recently. It was of a highway in Israel on holocaust memorial day. The cars had stopped and people had got out to observe the silence. It struck me in that moment just how important remembrance is to Israelis. Not least, it protects them from having to come to terms with the daily realities of their horrific occupation.
