The rent is way too high. My cousin is renting the same apartment I rented 20 years ago, and the rent went from 646 to 2400. For the exact apartment, nothing changed but the appliance. Longshoreman and management should be able to compromise, because automation should be good for everyone, but I understand why that's hard. The deal would obviously be that the costs saved by labor automation would be split between workers and owners. The hard part is that they would need to be shared, in some sense, forever, so management couldn't just restructure. Ideally, workers would somehow have a direct interest in the machines that replace or partially-replace them, since they are in a good position to understand how to get the most out of them. So a worker becomes a guild-master, except all her apprentices and journeymen are now robots.
