GRETA THUNBERG: My name is Greta Thunberg. I am 15 years old, and I’m from Sweden. I speak on behalf of Climate Justice Now! Many people say that Sweden is just a small country, and it doesn’t matter what we do. But I’ve learned that you are never too small to make a difference. And if a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school, then imagine what we could all do together if we really wanted to. But to do that, we have to speak clearly, no matter how uncomfortable that may be. You only speak of green eternal economic growth because you are too scared of being unpopular. You only talk about moving forward with the same bad ideas that got us into this mess, even when the only sensible thing to do is pull the emergency brake. You are not mature enough to tell it like it is. Even that burden you leave to us children. But I don’t care about being popular. I care about climate justice and the living planet. Our civilization is being sacrificed for the opportunity of a very small number of people to continue making enormous amounts of money. Our biosphere is being sacrificed so that rich people in countries like mine can live in luxury. It is the sufferings of the many which pay for the luxuries of the few. The year 2078, I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children, maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you. Maybe they will ask why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act. You say you love your children above all else, and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes. Until you start focusing on what needs to be done, rather than what is politically possible, there is no hope. We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis. We need to keep the fossil fuels in the ground, and we need to focus on equity. And if solutions within the system are so impossible to find, then maybe we should change the system itself. We have not come here to beg world leaders to care. You have ignored us in the past, and you will ignore us again. We have run out of excuses, and we are running out of time. We have come here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people. Thank you.

@@snuffeldjuret - And yet Professor Kevin Anderson, an actual climate scientist tweeted "On climate change @GretaThunberg demonstrates more clarity & leadership in one speech than a quarter of a century of the combined contributions of so called world leaders. Wilful ignorance & lies have overseen a 65% rise in CO2 since 1990. Time to hand over the baton." This is it, to experts, what Greta Thunberg says is profound, because they understand the situation in depth, and know her analysis is the most perfect approximation of the problem. There no exaggeration at all in what Greta Thuberg says, she has correctly understood the science. Climate change is definitely an existential threat to our civilization. It really could lead to the collapse of our civilization, and the starvation of billions of people. That is what the actual science points to, if it is not addressed. However, if you are someone who doesn't understand the science, and how reliant we are on ecosystems finely adapted to the current climate regime, and you have been misled by propaganda, into believing the science isn't clear, or is mistaken, it might not make sense. But this is the thing, to a public with no insight into any science, they have no basis on which to evaluate the problem. Science is not made to be understandable to lay people. The public has no understanding of gravity, bar from what it does, no insight in Einstein's theory of relativity, or even basic Newtonian mechanics. Basically the public has at best a very sketchy of all the big scientific discoveries of the last several hundred years. Usually the public just takes word of senior scientists. There is no precedent of the public working things out for themselves, or choosing what science to accept or question. Yet this is the thing, except for a few ideologically motivated contrarian scientists, who also challenge lots of other stuff taken to be fact, there is no questioning of climate science. Every single scientific organization and institute accept anthropogenic climate change as described by the IPCC. This is from any field of science. To the vast majority of scientists without an ideological agenda, climate science is normal science and beyond question. You may see what Greta Thunberg said as grandstanding. But to anyone with a deeper understanding of the science, what she says is profound and accurate.

@@stephenbarlow2493 She says "We have come here to let you know, that change is coming. Whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people" after trash talking the grown ups. How am I to not interpret that as "you do you boo, we don't care". What she said is basically what I said when I was her age. It didn't make me deserve the Nobel Peace Price, it wasn't profound at all. It is very easy to know everything when you are a kid. She does, and so did I. It is like saying "Oh man, if no one committed any crime, the world would be a fantastic place". Oh so profound, applause! Not sure why you think I am anti-science, I am probably more pro-science than you. The statement made by Professor Kevin Anderson is hyperbolic and you know it.
@stephenbarlow24936 жыл бұрын
@@snuffeldjuret - I didn't say you were anti-science, you just made that up - I said you self-evidently didn't "understand the science" [behind climate change and the impacts], along with the history of failures to address the causes of climate change. Not understanding, is not the same as being against something. This is because if you did understand how profound and accurate what Greta Thunberg says is, you wouldn't have said what you did. I've been following climate change, the science, attempts to address the causes etc, for over 30 years, and environmental impacts for nearly 50 years. In that time I have never heard anyone speak with the clarity and accuracy of Greta Thunberg. You obviously haven't been paying attention. Listen at the beginning, where Greta Thunberg says she is speaking on behalf of "Climate Justice Now", a "grown-up" organization. What Professor Kevin Anderson says is not hyperbolic, and if you knew anything at all about him, and why he said that, you'd understand why. www.globaljustice.org.uk/who-we-are Forget Greta Thunberg's age. She is not just a kid saying things. She has had a profound effect world wide in just a few months. She has inspired many of the leading thinkers on climate change. As for your claims that she is basically saying what you did at her age, I better not say too much about it. I don't remember you being invited to sit with the UN Secretary General, or inspiring leading thinkers on whatever subject you were talking about. Likewise about your claim that you are more "pro-science" than me. Do you know me, have we met? How do presume to know this? Science is a vast subject, and only a small minority of scientists study climate science and related fields such as environmental science and ecological science. Therefore I was making no assumptions whatsoever about your knowledge of science generally, how pro-science you were etc, just that self-evidently you do not know much about climate change, the history of addressing it, or rather the failure to address the causes, the seriousness of the threat. Unless you are just pretending not to. We've reached a juncture in time where we only have a very narrow window of opportunity to address climate change. It's a life or death thing for our civilization. Many climate change activists, and climate scientists, which are entirely different, have come to realise that we must act now, and force the necessary change, because our leadership have completely misunderstood the seriousness of the threat from climate change. Almost certainly most had already decided that, before they'd ever heard of Greta Thunberg. She has simply captured the zeitgeist perfectly. There is a whole new climate activism movement forming, with people, who have not been in trouble with the law before willing to go to prison, in large numbers. Greta Thunberg knows all about this, you self-evidently do not, and haven't been following it, or you would know just how deadly serious they are. If our leadership does not take the necessary action, in the next few years you are going to see a massive rebellion by informed people. This is what Greta Thunberg is talking about.

I bet those same haters never heard about 'microplastic pollution' (invisible to see with the eyes) in our waters and all of our food, yes even in fresh food in the supermarket. I bet they never heard about 'micro-organisms diversity', the base of all life, which is in very heavy decline caused by different kinds of human pollution. Even if we only decimate a little of micro-life diversity, then no single life on earth is possible anymore. Climate change isn't only about Nature, it's also about how WE can change, the climate of our brain capacity, the climate of our own intentions, for the benefit for future generations. It's surviving the next step in evolution, not only for human, but for every possible life on Earth. Don't forget, our kids are our future, eventually the new generations always wins from the older generations, it's called progress. It's progress in thinking, progress in surviving. @@yeska62 No proof, but it's not unusual to use children as presenters for marketing reasons. Maybe it's just her being nervous (which would be understandable) but she does not seem to speak very freely or from the bottom of her heart and mind but seems to read a text that uses words she would not use normally. I am convinced that someone else wrote it or at least corrected and changed parts of a speech she might have written herself. I don't think thats bad, as long as she agrees with what she reads there, as the message is still a good and important one, but it does not feel really naturally.
@fearofmusic13126 жыл бұрын
@Davvy Jannes Oh, i do not criticise her for this speech and am well aware of the intelligence and eloquence of children and teenagers in her age, which can range widely, just like among older persons. Yet, to me and most I've asked, her speech does not feel naturally nor entirely convincing in style as it seems to be polished and altered indeed. Yet of course, it could be a misunderstanding from my side and again, i do not criticise her for that. And yeah, she probably isn't the average 15 year old, but then again, maybe it would have been all the more credible if an average young person spoke about this issue in less stilted, artificial ways indeed as it is a topic that affects us all and should be communicated as just that.

I think this small change would make for a stronger, more provocative statement and one that better reflects the reality of the situation. That small critique aside, your speech was brilliant, and moving, and most of all it was motivating in its uncompromising nature. You should be very proud of the work you are doing. I'm certainly proud of you and I'm sure many others are too, all around the world. Keep fighting the good fight young lady, I'll be following your efforts from here in Australia. There aren't truly arguments about that. The climate change is scientific consensus and the arguments against it are long disproven. Well let me tell you why , we're doing tons of things, recycling, filters on engines etc. even things that make no sense like reusable bags or paper straws. Europe and the US are leading in terms of minimizing polution. The real issue is with countries like China with 50% of carbon emissions. There is also the small fact that 10 rivers currently pollute the oceans, 8 are in Africa and 2 are in Asia. The statement " Children are the Future " only refers to the fact that you will grow up to be adults that make the decisions one day, not that you're eligible to make them now. Co2 emissions are heavier than air and therefore disperse all around us. When it is cold, Co2 vaporises. A good example of this is when a plane is flying high in a clear blue sky; we will then see a great cloud of vaporised Co2. Where clouds don't rise, but in low pressure areas they can come down as rain or snow, but they don't rise up into the stratosphere. Although methane, from cows, is a potential greenhouse gas, its effect is relatively short-lived. So perhaps the climate change and the global warming that spelled the end of the recognised Ice-Age, over 12,000 years ago, is also what is happening now? When waste plastic should surely be our true concern?
@travisbarrett73295 жыл бұрын
Methane is the most potent of all greenhouse gases. short lied? Wrong again look at what CO2 and CH4(Methane) did to our sister planet of Venus.600°-900° on the surface hot enough to melt lead. This has been known since the '70"s. Check your sources before you post or ask for a raise from the oil companies or their lobby
@travisbarrett73295 жыл бұрын
Plastics are the basically the same things long chains of hydrocarbons and synthetic materials that will poison our food and fresh water supply by not degrading where humans choose to leave them. Synthetic materials engineered in the 20th century will be here long after the last human walks the planet. This is the only repeat ONLY place we know of that can support our species and the food we consume so unless we collectively get our priorities straight the next few generations of us will be the last

@@wilmahestepigen8340 First of all *yes* global warming and the climatic change are documented and proven phenomenon by millions of scientists (the huge majority of them), so yeah don't even dare to say that is not happening. 1. Rise of sea levels due to the melting of polar ice caps. Many countries will be swallowed by oceans destroying ecosystems and potentially making an enormous demographic crisis (like the one that they are living in China, so little space for so many people). That without takin into account the death and extinction of the fauna in polar areas. 2. Plagues, many species will exponentially rise in population while in consequence othes became extinct (jellyfish for example, they are becoming a huge plague.). Bees for example are very sensitive animals and are the ones that suffer the most, without them plants won't be able to reproduce, a tragic chain of extinction. 3. Natural disasters like floods, storms, strong winds, droughts, extreme temperatures (not only hot ones, ignorant people like Donald Trump think that climatic change is just about that when it's the cause of both freezing and hot temperatures)... Will be very often and dangerous so health and echonomical problems will be more usual. 4. Other health problems like skin cancer due to the destruction of the ozone layer that protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays and their radiation. Pollution in general is the cause of hundreds of different diseases. That's all I can think by now, there are probably much more in the Internet, I'm not an expert

I am a sixteen year old Chinese student. What I want to say is that not all young people are as ignorant as that Swedish girl. I want to compare my own childhood and thoughts with her, and you will know why this girl is ignorant. I don't think I'm smarter than she is, but I can at least guarantee that I won't be as ignorant as she is. In addition, it has nothing to do with the state. One. He was born in Sweden. We all know that Sweden is a very rich country. People's life pressure is very, very low. Although there is no international status, people are happy. 2. I'm her age, but I don't think she knows enough about the world. Because she lived in a wealthy environment when she was a child. There's nothing to worry about. But my childhood was different from hers. Although I had enough food and clothes when I was young, you know, in 03-07, China is still a poor country with a per capita GDP of only 4000 dollars. When I was born in 03, my family had no computer, no air conditioning, or even my only toy was a car model. My only entertainment is an old TV set. I don't have a car at home. So I know how poverty feels. At that time, I was satisfied to eat enough. Three. I don't know her, but personally I think she has enough time, but she spends it on meaningless things instead of learning to make herself more educated. I am as young as she is now, but I know what is "self-knowledge". I never comment and interpret things that I do not understand. I will learn something I do not understand. When I understand, I will not immediately say I understand, but put it in my mind. 3. She apparently did not spend her time learning and understanding the world. 4. Everyone who has experienced pain will be grateful and satisfied with today's life. Nowadays, many people in the world have difficulties in living and eating. They don't have the energy to care about the "environment" because it's hard for them to get enough resources. T The so-called "environment". Rich people tell the poor: "You should protect the environment."go fuck you self. My standard of living is quite different from my childhood. Like other Chinese people, there is nothing to worry about now, even though the air quality is getting worse. I have been to 9 countries, the United States, Canada, Japan. Europe has been to France, Switzerland, Sweden and Britain. I can feel that the standard of living in Europe is really high except in France, so as I said before, people who have lived carefree since childhood think differently from those who have lived poor to carefree.
