Edwin Ackerman's analysis of Mexican politics is spot-on. In fact, I would go even further in making a strong case for the necessity of judicial reform. Since Norma PIna became Supreme Court chair-person,The judiciary has become the oposition's closest allies. A few judges are actually quite honest and want change. But most of them and most of the workers that benefit from the system they are defending, along with a significant portion of media outlets, union bosses, academics, intellectuals, religious hierarchies, wealthy corporations, and imperialist interests in the U.S. and Europe, have aligned themselves with the PAN and PRI. Together, they seek to attack, weaken, and ultimately overthrow the MORENA party and its allies. Their motive? The current government has dared to prioritize the people and the working class, directly challenging the corrupt and greedy neoliberal system that has long served the interests of the elites

I was disappointed by Amy Goodman’s introduction to this segment. She delivered a generic and almost completely unresearched introduction essentially drawn from the English language neoliberal press’s gross mischaracterizations and stunning failures of journalism. “Critics say” is not reporting. Concerning the judicial reform, Goodman failed to mention the enormous and widespread demonstrations in support of the reform. Goodman also failed to mention that the judicial reform is part of a package of 18 constitutional reforms, including the right to food, healthy environment, the right to water access, and the protection of the rights of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples and communities. The best source in the English language for the entire reform package is from the American big law corporate law firm White & Case. I posted a link, below. Concerning violence, murders went down in Mexico during AMLO’s term. He came into office with the highest murder rate in Mexico’s history. The murder rate skyrocketed starting in 2006 when Felipe Calderón took office as Mexico’s president and began cooperating with the DEA in the war on drugs. (He signed the Mérida Initiative in 2006.) Many of the murders were committed not by cartels but by the Mexican army, as has been widely reported in Mexico. That reporting has put a lot of journalists in danger and indeed led to the murder of some of those journalists. AMLO, to his credit, has been working on changing the leadership of the military and been putting the military to work constructing new infrastructure projects. Something that is necessary due to the hollowing out of the Mexican state and the dearth of contractors in Mexico who can work on public projects without having their palms greased and then incurring massive cost overruns. Kudos to Edwin Ackerman on his attempt to report factually in a limited amount of time.

El tren Maya, did not cause any environmental damage, Mexico leads the world in reforestation projects AMLO is the best president that Mexico has had and, only trailed India’s prime minister, he left office with 70% + of approval ratings. So. When you talk about Mexico, do the your homework.

AMLO did a great job so much so that this election people overwhelmingly voted to have the senate , and is telling you a Mexican from the south and we all approve the Mayan train , I thought this channel was unbiased but I guess I was wrong
@pidiroderics84253 ай бұрын
Exactly, Democracy Now is like the Young Turks, claiming they are left and unbiased when in reality they're are the opposite. The Mayan Train is approved by the South in Mexico, it will better that community, Amy mentioned deforestation didnt go more into detail but told its viewers the indigenous are not okay with it, it's the right in Mexico not okay with it, they hate to see the the Mayas better their lives.

Okay, let the immigrants come in and replace the Trumptards
Very interesting takes from Dr Ackerman, but some more context is needed still. The justices refusing to take a cut from their compensation is also upheld by the constitution in that no law can reduce rights of any person, including the rights to a previously agreed salary, that is why this particular law (about reducing salaries) cannot be applied retroactively. He also glosses over the "petty technicalities" over which the previous reforms were overturned, this includes the president of the parliament publishing the proposal in the wee hours when nobody could reasonably read, understand and prepare discussions and forcing a vote 7am without any formal review. This, done by the president's own party majority following his precise wishes of "not changing one iota" of the proposal. These were identified by the Supreme Court as procedural violations. It is important to note that the president had no reason to do this, they still held a majority, they could've follow formal procedure, allow some discussion and still pass the new bills. (it is speculated that he did this specifically to turn up the heat on the Supreme Court issue to win over sympathy, in preparation for the elections that ran among other things on the judicial reform). There are many many more little things like this that seem innocuous on the surface but that hide nuance that is important to at least know about before passing judgment. There's the escalating of violence and many other areas to talk about. None of this is to negate any of the clear, solid social wins of president López Obrador, but it is important to understand where are his critics coming from. Yes, as Dr Ackerman mentioned, a lot it is knee-jerk reactions of the opposition, but there are aspects of his presidency that warrant close inspection and criticism.
