As an Ohio election official in a slightly leaning Republican area, there was about 2 to 3 times more No votes than Yes ones once the polls closed for both precincts that voted in my location. This vote was explicitly about abortion rights! The Ohio republican representatives are on record stating as such! There is an explicit abortion rights vote on the November Ohio election ballot, currently running at 58% approval. Change the pass limit from 50% (+1 vote) to 60% and it will go from a pass to a fail vote. Why else would you call an august snap election just a few months after passing legislation to remove august snap elections and if it was so important to change the pass limit, why vote on it now in its own special election? Why was this not put on the ballot last election or put on the upcoming November election?

In Texas, I have had Republicans come to my door, but never a Democrat. I went on line the other day to see who was going to run against Cruz. What is more shocking to me was the Ohio Supreme Court said that the Ohio lawmakers passed the law to outlaw the August primary therefore they could break the law. Urh no judges, lawmakers cannot break laws that they passed. If they want to overturn a law, they need to pass a bill to repeal that law. That's how it works. Just like the Prohibition. It really should be that way here too. You should be required to show up at city hall within 30 days of turning 18. You should have to register for selective service and take a civics test and pass it and register to vote if you pass the test and get a voter ID that has to be updated every ten years with a new picture. If you don't pass the test then you should have to study and retake it till you do pass and get registered to vote.Then you should be required to vote in every single election held in your city for whatever issue or office on the ballot. I mean it's the least you could do to earn your citizenship besides just automatically being granted US citizenship just because your were born here.

The other good thing about mandatory voting is it puts the onus on the government to make it *easy* to vote - you can't demand people vote and then make it difficult for them to do so. (Well, maybe if you're a Republican you can...) So elections are held on a Saturday, there are plenty of voting options (early, postal, in person), polling stations practically everywhere and (at least in my experience) very short queues. The idea you need to bring a camp-bed and a packed lunch in order to cast your vote is insanity. (And before anyone asks, I live in the outskirts of a city of 5million people) Australia also has a well resourced and effective Electoral Commission which manages elections and monitors for voter fraud.

It's also not (usually) as big a deal as the US Presidential elections but in a general election many people will have an 'election party' as they watch the results come in on TV (we usually know most of the results by midnight) BBQ and beer, wine and pizza, champagne and finger-food - whichever floats your boat! No stipends I'm afraid, it's your civic duty after all...

Independents seldom win, but they dilute the votes for either party. It could give Republicans something else to vote for, when they don't like what the Republicans are putting out, but don't care to go full Democrat. I'm former Republican, who went Independent, but most voters or either Democrat or Republican. I no longer vote for party, but for the person. I have never seen on a voting ballot, a place where you can choose to not vote for either person.

I don't think it works that way, but they can be voted out. If you get a majority of Democrats it will still take other Republicans to impeach one of its members, same for Democrats. In Texas we have had one under indictment for years, but now members of his own party are holding impeachment hearing against him. He tried donating 3 million to the P.A.C. to the person overseeing his impeachment, who does not even run for re-election until 2026. His wife, who is a Senator, so far has not recused herself from voting on the matter.

I live in rural Wisconsin and it’s all Pro Life Republican nut jobs. I am pro abortion and a democrat, this topic came up at my work a little while back and I voiced my opinion. It was not well received. Bodily autonomy is something people here have a hard time understanding. I hope we can voice truths here and start changing a few minds.

My favorite point is no one should be able to rape a minor, force her to pay $35,000 to a million dollars in medical expenses to have the baby, then award custody to her adult rapist because she can't afford to support the baby after harm he caused. It just makes all women bodily slaves to every rapist thug in the country, and with 2% of rape cases leading to any sort of prosecution, there's a lot more of them running around free to rape more women and girls.
