“historically, poor people have always imitated the fashion of the rich. But because your socioeconomic status comes preloaded with specific cultural, stylistic and taste based contours, poor people always wore rich clothes wrong. The colours got louder and the labels more pronounced. Fashion became a way to display wealth for people who didn’t really have it, driven by a deep seated impulse to prove to everyone you made it out of the hood. So when gucci became ghetto, the rich had to switch up their styles again, to protect themselves from appearing cringe. So the rich, for the first time ever, became demure and differential to differentiate themselves from the great unwashed. Being demure became the new form of performative status denial” This part really struck me as great writing

Trying to be Demure in Oxford Witnesses gave a description of Frankie being the total opposite of demure after five hours in the "The Four Candles" Wetherspoons in Oxford city centre. "I blame the intemperance and my impression of Borachio, That caused me to somersault out of the premises at 1:15 a.m. I thought I could have turned down the free Jägerbombs and bottles of Desperados, but I was too polite to refuse."
@Christian-os3kkАй бұрын
I didn't even know such word as 'demure' existed. So huge respect to Frankie - it seems that he can allow himself to be, at least to some degree, immersed in the current and latest social-media-driven issues present at the boundary between individuum and society, without any hindrance to the mental fortitude required to obtain the original, removed and distanced bird's-eye point of view.

I’m wayyyyyyyyy outside the age group who may be doing this. This is the weirdest understanding of demure I’ve ever heard. Like, not being seen or taking pics / videos of yourself or participating online would be the most demure you could be. I was in secondary school in the 80s (talk about weird), so no shade here. Good video, fascinating.
@Deadlyaztec272 ай бұрын
"Demure" is simply a Gen Z/Gen Alpha aesthetic that is understated, and like the video said "a heteronormative reconfiguration". It's importance is that it's redefining casual and semi-casual wear in the mid 2020's to finally form an abrupt difference in fashion eras. The last big fashion era was 2015 to 2024. Now it will be 2024-future. Demure is a rejection of wild and daring style, much like the 1980's completely clawed back the wild fashion of the 1970's. "If I saw someone in bright retro neon of the Covid era right now, that wouldn't be very Demure. It would give me 'the ick' and be giving desperate..."
