I saw Eric Johnson explaining about how he approaches chord melody stuff, and how he's thinking about the introduction of Cliffs of Dover, but here's some things that I think you probably might find help demystify things a bit further!

This is the best lesson I have ever watched covering EJ... Thank you so so very much for opening my mind to these chord shapes, I could NEVER figure out any EJ chord voicings, I just simply couldn't hear what was going on. This has definitely flicked a lightbulb on for me.

Yes please do more of these :) Super helpful as EJ's chord style is one of my favorite. Sort of tells it's own story.

This is an absolutely wonderful, very useful lesson! (Although my fingers aren't quite long enough for some of the triads lower down on the neck.) But that constant high-pitched whine/drone sound in the background is driving me crazy!

@@johnnathancordy I'm hearing a lower "D" note, but there's also a higher pitched E note that's ringing out throughout the vid. Anyway, minor issue, thanks for the great EJ lesson!

Thank you for these videos. I’m very new to this style of playing, but I’ve always chased his lead sound. What would be the easiest way to achieve the hold repeat? I feel like this is a vital practice tool I’ve missed. I prefer the long soft constant that you are using.

Wonderful! I am trying to get a better handle on harmony, but I seem to have trouble visualising it on the fretboard - I know much of the theory from playing keys for many years but I find it difficult to move that knowledge over to the guitar...any tips?

Any reason you don't do the same fingering for root-on-4th-string chords as root-on-5th-string chords? For example, for D you could do xx[12][14]x[14], the same shape as x57x7x. But rather, you do xx[12]x[10][14].

Loved this episode! A side question: Do you have any issues with having no strings trees on a strat? I even have trouble with D and G strings. I feel like I need an absurd amount of windings to get a halfway decent string break over the nut. Do I need to replace my tuning machines?
@leejean1985
@leejean1985 4 жыл бұрын
Are you using staggered tuners? From the lack of the string tree on this strat, I'm venturing this is a EJ sig strat in the video.
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy 4 жыл бұрын
@@leejean1985 Lee is correct this is an EJ strat so they are staggered. However, I never stuck string trees on my self build strats and I can't really tell a difference, perhaps it's a nut issue?

Thanks for the responses. I guess staggered tuners is what I need. Looks like fender sells them for $60... not too bad

I’m about 3 minutes into the video, your getting some really pretty sounds, but the constant drone is making it really hard to listen when you’re talking. You’re an amazing guitar player, and I hate to focus on the negative but it’s overwhelming. I still gave the video a thumbs up though man. Great lesson.
