Demystifying Iran and the Resistance Axis w/Rania Khalek and Nima Shirazi

Israel's genocide in Gaza has unleashed a low-grade regional war that is gradually escalating towards what could become an all-out conflict. The central players in this simmering conflict are the members of the informal Resistance Axis, which include Hezbollah in Lebanon, a number of armed Palestinian groups including Hamas, the Syrian and Iranian governments, the Houthis or Ansarallah in Yemen, and Iraq's armed Popular Mobilization Forces. Numerous strikes against Israeli and US military and commercial targets have already been carried out by these groups across the region, from US military bases in Iraq to Israel-linked commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
As the possibility of a regional conflagration looms, corporate media outlets are turning their attention the Resistance Axis-and often regurgitating stale, Orientalist narratives that have deployed for decades to justify US and Israeli aggression in the region. Central to this media narrative is the presentation of Iran as a kind of puppet master overseeing and coordinating the activities of the Resistance Axis. What this narrative fails to take into account is that it is not Iranian cunning that has created the Resistance Axis, but decades of US and Israeli aggression. Journalists Rania Khalek and Nima Shirazi join The Real News for a conversation on the media narratives spun around the Resistance Axis and Iran, and how such portrayals have primed the US public to support forever wars in West Asia for decades.

I need to find a better way to explain something. whenever there’s been a protest movement in Iran or a possible changing of the political guard like those we’ve seen more recently with women and girls protesting the mandated hijab (and plenty want to wear it as A CHOICE, but the mandate undermines the religious observance for them) or the Green Revolution, I’ve said something along the lines of, “this doesn’t mean they’re all of a sudden going to love America. don’t try to ‘help’ because it’s the fastest way to quell the uprising.” and what I really mean is a few things: 1) they have every reason to not like us because of all our meddling and bombing and arming of people we think will undermine them. all that history doesn’t disappear because they’re having an internal struggle about self-determination. 2) if the protests succeed, it should not be considered them rolling out the red carpet for our imperialists. it’s still their country and their rights. we don’t need to see it as an opportunity to go in and start dictating things as if they’re a baby country. they’re a very long standing civilization. they don’t need our condescension. 3) they don’t need help from our activists. people here need help from our activists. but our activists also need to consider listening more and dictating less when it comes to trying to assist communities we’re not part of but want to ally with. 4) they have their own culture. they’re not going to start chowing down McDonalds and wearing booty shorts. we could, quite frankly, benefit from adopting some of their cultural attitudes like not treating women as objects and maybe reading some more contemporary poetry. it’s also never going to be wrong for the government in a country that is primarily Muslim to play calls to prayer over loudspeakers. but that doesn’t mean I want that kind of state assistance here-the churches already exploit their non-taxable status quite enough and I have literally heard forced-birthers try to sound less racist by adopting the position on abortion that some of the groups which use religion as a cudgel (like, say, the Taliban-though there are definitely reasons people liked them; we fucked up their country and the Taliban started picking up the pieces village by village). yes, the axis of resistance isn’t at all what we’ve been sold. but we need to remember to curb our desire to see it as an in which a lot of people have difficulty doing in this country.

Great conversation. I often listen to The Real News Network, and it greatly annoys me that The Real Jew News with Brother Nathanel has been taken down on all platforms, but he probably told too much truth about the Jewish environment in which he grew up. Incidentally, Chris Hedge is always interesting, and BreakThrough News with its long conversations and many experts is really educational. So I visit Brian Becker and Rania Kalek every day, and otherwise "relax" with the Jimmy Dore show. Alternative media such as those mentioned rule and the only ones with the same quality are the world's largest media company, Russia Today.
