I started my career working for a big branded company for 3 years (bond) through placement and the company decided my roles. I was frequently changed in some operations while I strived to work in Project management. Now I work for a company that is not any top companies but I am a valued resource and I have been working on projects and was able to crack a big brand company because I applied my experience in the PMP topics but I have decided to stay back with my current employer for the respect and the value. May be sometimes we might want to share our talent to companies like mine to help them grow... :-)

I rose to the top of my small company, thought the CEO had my back. But to my horror, he turned tables on me, pitted me against his other employees, undermined my work, never acknowledged my good contribution, and constantly put me down. I have no choice but to think about my emotional and mental well-being. I quit today. The CEO has agreed to give me a reference (I'm getting it in writing). Good riddance to bad rubbish. I know that I'll be successful in finding something good that I deserve. If your CEO /boss is a psychopath or narcissist, quit before it becomes unbearable.

I'm at my mid 20's. I almost did everything but follow these advices. I started off in a large cap company engineering firm with a permanent contract and thought I was invincible given all the job new opportunities the large cap company gave me. I quit that job for a no-name brand with promising opportunities, I did this a couple of times. Got fired once, just left out the worksite for dissatisfaction of the management twice. Finally ended up working as a day labourer on a monthly contract that may or may not get renewed at the end of the month. Resume looks like shit. Currently underpaid, underworked, overqualified. All of this in less than five years. This is my worst financial decision.

I listen to this 2 years ago at a time I was going through worst time in my career. I decided to fight back but I decided to fight back by becoming the CEO of my career. I fought back by improving my skillset, improving my professional brand. Result, my salary increased by 100% and my side income (my afterwork job) is thriving and the same workplace that ignored me and treated me like trash is doing all kind of things to keep me because I have become valuable and attractive in the market. I still comeback here to remind myself of these career advice gems.

Agree with all the points apart from leaving a big name. I'm mid 30's and did this 10 years ago to start contracting for more money. A different route than most of my friends, I could not be happier that I did. Whilst they are all ripe to go into higher paying, higher responsibility jobs (just as they are having new family's) I'm in a position to retire and live off investment income. There are more than one ways to skin a cat, but leaving for more earlier is a great option if you do it right and invest wisely. Having the choice to work, not driven by need is a game changer for workplace satisfaction and having the ability to choose what you do with your time is a game changer for life satisfaction.

Very good video with some great advice. However, I’ve been fighting against office politics, an inadequately implemented change program and a manager who simply wouldn’t support me. I managed to fight back and stand up for myself over two years and finished the project and process I needed to. Once I’d done this I then decided it was time to move on, but was very pleased I stood up to what was going on. I took a lot from dealing with the situation I was facing. I start my new job next month. I’d highly recommend fighting back, it will benefit you hugely. But equally, recognise if the situation is truly untenable to avoid unneeded ego driven damage.

Deniz, I feel that I am being bullied, and feel like is is very difficult for me to go to work. I just force myself to go and stay there up to the end of my shift. I’ve been hearing co workers talking bad behind my back them thinking I can’t hear them. It’s just so sad. I need this job so much to pay my bills i feel embarrassed everyday to be there. I sometimes want to be fired but i have been there only 3 months. I feel sometimes worthless and stupid. I really appreciate you for this video I will try to push myself to keep this job as long as i can.

Hi Wendy. I never comment but I felt compelled to after readying your comment. I was bullied at my previous job along with ageism. It was a very toxic environment and till this day I sometimes struggle. I felt as they were trying to break me. For whatever reason they felt threaten because of the many years of experience I had. It was so crazy that my hiring manager told me on my first day of work that you will see people who work and others who do not. His predecessor literally left a note on his computer and walked out never to been seen again. They had to call him to figure out he quite. Less than a month my manager quite. I quite my job without having another job. I’m not saying to do that at all. I had my wife to support me and family....I’d go to work literally crying and feeling like wtf is going to happen today. When people hear about bullying they think elementary or jr. high/high school. The worst part about bullying in a professional work environment is that it’s done covertly and subtle. I feel for you because the kind of stress you should have is work related not people related. Lastly, it was so bad even after I left my job that I would have melt downs at home. Felt like I let my family down even though I had their backing and even supported me leaving this company. I went to see therapist and went on medication. It helped a lot but every now and then I get flash backs. All I can say is that it gets better but I highly recommend you look for a new job and fight back. It takes courage but I can’t stress enough to fight back. Sorry for the rant...stay strong, be positive, and be proactive in looking for a new job. This is just a moment in time.

Sergio L : I’m going through the same thing for the second time. I quit my toxic job of 9 years and was unemployed for 2 years with a few short term temp positions. I went back to the university in a different department and experiencing the same issue. I’ve only been there for 9 months and I’m ready to quit. I am continuously being set up and harassed by the boss and another coworker. People don’t understand the extent of work place bullying.

I get that a lot of these are great points, but the job you are describing isn't the one I'm leaving. I have worked at this company for 9 years and I keep getting pushed back down to cover the entry level(used to be temp) jobs because turnover is so high. I'm not learning anything new because I work 70+ hours a week to do the jobs of 2 people. It doesn't matter that they are a big name if now my resume shows I'm not worth promoting because I've been passed over so many times because they can't afford to lose me. These reasons are why I've been miserable for 9 years and can now afford to quit. I'm going back for my masters and not looking back.

Be very careful what you talk because sometimes they will interpret it as a threat which will fire you from the company. And yes, never make the mistake of quitting.
