This was 1982, the year that Italy won the World Cup and this team Denmark had then, was the only team to beat Italy from the group stages all the way to the final against Germany. One of the best and perhaps *the* most exciting international team of the 80's emerged.

It was here that Denmark really emerged as a new European footballing force. Their implosion in the world cup in Mexico 5-1 to Spain remains one of the great mysteries of the global game.

Fucking hell that goal by Jesper Olsen was a touch of class. Silky smooth. England were lucky to get away with giving away just one penalty.

Jesper Olsen was a terrific player. Saw him in a United shirt many times. Peter Shilton was a great goalie when it came to stopping shots but couldn't save a penalty to save his life.

Denmark did so well to come back from behind, build on the result and then go from strength to strength in the group to qualify for Euro 84 - a tournament that they were good enough to win.

I remember everyone saying this was a good result away to Denmark but it wasn't quite enough in the end and Bobby Robson offered to resign but was urged to stay on.

I was at that game, I was a young 21 year old drunk England fan. The fighting before, during and after the game was unreal, the Danish police just didn't have a clue how to control it. England's notorious hooligans wrecked the bars surrounding the stadium and it carried on to the city centre well into the night. Headlines in the British press after read "Foreign secretary appologises to Danish Prime Minister for hooligans" I remember the ferry arriving back at Harwich on the friday morning and there being hundreds of police waiting dockside. Crazy days.
@shoutinghorse4 жыл бұрын
@Athelstan Edwardson Yet this was in 1982, three years before Hysel and UEFA still gave Juventus half the Liverpool section seperated only by a chicken wire fence. Again the authorities never learn. Not excusing the hooliganism but some of that blame must go to UEFA & Belgium FA
@shoutinghorse4 жыл бұрын
@Athelstan Edwardson Yeah they did. Spurs in Rotterdam, Leeds in Paris spring to mind. Man Utd too. Plus Rangers & Celtic caused trouble on their travels so it wasn't just the English.
@chelsblue73704 жыл бұрын
@Athelstan Edwardson Heysel was the convenient excuse to get rid of the English teams because they were winning most trophies from the mid-70's up to Heysel, and when you look at the grand picture, it took English club football some 20 years to start being truly competitive in Europe again. Italian treachery at its finest, cheats on and off the pitch at all times.

Yes, that was the old national stadium in Copenhagen. Almost a pure all-stander. I guess that many european stadiums were like that back then. The most infamous ones being Heysel and Hillsborough. And on top of that: Smoke bombs, firecrackers, spectators on the field etc etc. UEFA has really toughened up since then.

@@philipritson8821 I think England were in a post 1982 Greenwood rebuilding phase though Denmark were on their to being a class outfit..sadly England paid the price from post 1978 to mid 1980's of the FA's failure to appoint Brian Clough and Peter Taylor to manage the England team..
