Greenland gained autonomy in 1979 within the Kingdom of Denmark. This autonomy was expanded in 2009. The Danish government and parliament handles foreign policy, immigration, citizenship, defense, the judicial system and some other minor areas, while the government and local parliament in Greenland handles legislation on all other matters. The ties between Greenland and Denmark are very tight and are not based solely on history, politics or money, but on strong family ties as well. Greenland is 54 times larger than Denmark. Greenland is the world's largest island, with a size of 2.175. 600 square kilometers. That area is larger than the following countries combined: France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, and Belgium. The population count is just under 57.000 with 19.500 living in the capital city of Nuuk located on the southwestern region of Greenland. All habitation is located along the coastlines as the interior of the country is covered by a massive ice sheet, three kilometers thick in the north central region. The northern most inhabited area is the settlement of Siorapaluk which is about 700 kilometers south of the North Pole.
@julianneheindorf5757
@julianneheindorf5757 Жыл бұрын
@mipmipmipmipmip, there are plenty of towns in the north. Just check out a map of Greenland. The northernmost inhabited place in the world is the very small settlement of Siorapaluk. It’s only 650 to 700 kilometers from the North Pole. Only weather stations or military facilities are closer to the North Pole any place in the Arctic.

Just for a laugh, in the nicest possible way, how do you think feeling would run in Greenland and in Denmark about an actual sale of Greenland to the United States? Ignoring any feelings you may have about recent events and people, Denmark has sold territory to the USA before-the USVI as I mentioned earlier. So it doesn't seem an unreasonable conversation to have. Is there pride or resentment or affiliation or antipathy that would favor or disfavor such a plan? Denmark could name its price, or just think of being free of the cost of supporting it for another thousand years. Is there anything about Greenland that Denmark desperately needs that does not involve cooperation with the United States? Unless you count Antarctica, it's the last true real estate opportunity on earth.

@@nichevo1 trump tried to buy us, but was firmly turned down by both the Greenlandic premier and the Danish prime minister. Trump didn’t like to hear the answer “no” so he insulted the Danish prime minister by calling her nasty. The reply was in Greenland was “we are open for business, but we are not for sale”. Of course, the US is the strongest military force in the world, and if they wanted to they could easily occupy us the way Germany did with a lot of countries during WWII, but Denmark is very strong alley and friend to the US on the world stage, and they are okay with the fact that Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. A lot of people in Greenland are not in favour of independence for several reasons. Unfortunately, we have a few unrealistic and unprincipled politicians who try to gain favour with a certain segment of the population by japping about independence. Denmark is not just going to ditch Greenland. What people around the world fail to appreciate is the fact that the ties between Greenland and Denmark are not just based on history, politics and money. There are many very strong family ties, and blood is thicker than anything else. As family members, we may squabble and argue among ourselves but when there is pressure from the outside Greenland and Denmarks sticks together, as we did when that lunatic wanted to buy us.

@@julianneheindorf5757 The name calling isn't really important but by all means this is Liberty Hall... Hard to see a relevant connection between Denmark and Greenland. Isn't it really just more of the old fashioned imperialist colonization ie You blundered into it sometime and it's yours fair and square? I mean, I'm sure you're nice to them and all, but surely all colonists tell themselves that. The surest proof of your unfitness to own Greenland is the fact that you're running a net loss on the place every year. Are you resource constrained from developing the 99% of Greenland which is uninhabited, or has it just never occurred to you?

I would like to note that around 25% if Greenland’s money is given to them by the Danish state, also since 2009 (or 2008 don’t remember the exact year) Greenlanders have had the legal right to claim full independence but they have as of this date not chosen to, this is because Denmark will stop giving them almost 1/4 of their economy if they go independent.

As a Dane, they're free to declare independence today if they want. But at that point DK won't be obligated to support them either. Not only the monetary support, also stuff like the free education that their populations enjoy when going to DK. And the Danish military wouldn't be patrolling their seas anymore. I'm good about the situation today, and I support more independence, my concern is just that they might not have thought full independence through... That said I really like the people and nations, hope to keep a friendly relationship even if they demand independence.

While the Mercator projection exaggerates the size, what he said isn't incorrect - Greenland is still *massive.* It's the largest island in the world not considered its own continent (ie excluding Australia and Antarctica) and is larger than the next three (New Guinea, Borneo, Madagascar) combined. At well over 2 milllion square kilometers, Greenland would be the 12th largest country in the entire world, even when not including the other territories of the Kingdom of Denmark.

I remember a weird strategy game that had the option for "baby boom" for every nation. And it always increased population by 1.5 million in 4 years. When picking Greenland Population went from 50.000 to 1.550.000 in 4 years. That's 15 kids a year. Those Greenlanders are wild
@Rex1987
@Rex1987 9 ай бұрын
actually Greenland did have a "baby boom" from around the 1950-70ies due to improvements in health care, education and other areas. The danish authorities wanted Greenland to have the same welfare state, as they where devloping in "mainland" Denmark. That meant an increase in babies born and the survivability, but the change towards a lifestyle based on a industrial welfare state, meant a great cultural shift away from the Inuit culture where you have greater connection with nature. You could argue that this change is still ongoing and has had given rise to many social problems like alkocolism and abuse in Greenland society.

Calling Greenland a "county" is pretty misleading. It's not a county, it's a COUNTRY. A country under the Kingdom of Denmark, but a separate country. unlike Iceland, neither Faroe Islands or Greenland would be able to be completely independent, since at least under the Kingdom of Denmark they are protected, they don't have to worry about defending their borders, if any of these territories would gain independence, most likely they would either lose it again to another power that might disregard the people that live there, or in the case of Greenland their borders might not be respected, Specially by US and Russia

I do feel like it's kinda shitty that the Faroe Islands were denied independence. I do wonder, however, if they are self-sufficient enough to be independent. Greenland is very dependent on Denmark, and so, while it has it's own government separate from the Danish one, wouldn't benefit from being fully independent. But I don't know if the same is true for the Faroe Islands. It could be that the Faroese believed they were self-sufficient enough to be independent, and the Danes disagreed, and that's why they denied independence. But it could also be because they didn't want to lose the territory. If so, then that was a scummy thing to do.

Its interesting how such a tiny nation like Denmark then owns such a massive piece of land, would either Greenland or the islands ever be able to function completely on their own without funding from Denmark? I highly doubt it
