It’s crazy hearing there was any negative takes on this film. I never thought the kids were bad actors. The way the kid played Dennis made it more memorable to me and very quotable.

It's fascinating looking back. I just watched the toy recently and was amazed that it had 0% Rotten Tomatoes from back then. It was not liked at all. But I liked it as a kid, and now I brought it up with some people and they all liked it too. If the critics could dictate the Box office, they would be producers

@@jibber27jabber I thought the same thing. Usually kids in movies and tv shows have been so trained for the spotlight and are on all the time that they don't resemble a real kid in any way. Mason wasn't that way at all which is why he was good as Dennis.

As someone who still owns this movie and watched it before Home Alone, I would never think to compare the two. Their moods were SO different. For one, there's legit characters and emotions in Dennis while Home Alone felt like a familiar 90s era comedy, though it likely just shaped the decade admittedly. Home Alone is a power fantasy for a kid, and Dennis is a family drama where you learn to understand your neighbors even as a kid. Kind of a more developed form of the relationship in Home Alone 2 between the pigeon lady and McCulkin
@MsLeenite
@MsLeenite 4 ай бұрын
I hear you, and you've made some valid points. Certainly, Kevin's remarkably clever and resourceful problem-solving was the meat of Home Alone. Everyone overlooked him, but it turned out he did fine on his own. But for me, a vital element of that film was the regular switch to Catherine O'Hara's ongoing struggle to get home to her child. Hughes could not leave her as a two-dimensional frazzled neurotic; we had to see how terribly ashamed she felt about the situation, and that she would move heaven and earth to get to Kevin. So it was mostly a kid's power fantasy, but also a neglect redemption fantasy for parents. Perhaps I was so struck by this because I was an adult when I saw Home Alone.
@Sam-lm8gi
@Sam-lm8gi 4 ай бұрын
I loved both films as a kid, but TBH, I probably watched Dennis the Menace more often than either of the Home Alone films (unless you count watching Marv's skeleton getting electrocuted on a loop fifty times in a row). Dennis the Menace was simply more emotional.

I'm glad you mentioned the British Dennis the Menace. When the movie was released over here (in the U.K), critics slammed it for being twee in comparison to our homegrown version. Although the coincidence of both stripe-shirted, dog owning, catapult wielding Dennises being created at exactly the same time on opposite sides of the pond is bizarre, that's pretty much where the similarities end. As Hank Ketcham once said; '..the British Dennis really IS a menace.'

Thanks for the video! The “little kid continually causing injury to grown adults in a semi-believable world” genre is one I could never get into, even as a kid. So I appreciate getting this perspective on it.

After having watched this movie for the first time in 25 years, I love it. And I just can't see anyone else, but Walter Matthau playing Mr Wilson. The one Grumpy Old Man is perfect for the role. I also had no idea that Phil Hartman had voiced Mr Wilson in the cartoon. Which now makes sense because he was my favorite character in the cartoon.

To this day the scene where Christopher Lloyd gets yanked up by the train and his face is so resigned to how he came to this moment but at the same time is looking at the audience in way that asks “can you believe this folks” still makes me laugh every time. This film should be an easy 80 - 90% on something like rotten tomatoes. I can understand if the humor isn’t a persons cup of tea but this is not a bad movie.

This was one of my favorite films growing up. I would watch Dennis the Menace whenever it would air on Family Channel Canada or Teletoon, and I would enjoy the comedy on display! From the pratfalls to the scary villain, the Dennis the Menace movie from 1993 managed to charm me! Plus, it introduced me to Walter Matthau and Christopher Lloyd! What's not to love!

There needs to be a minimum age for nominating an actor for a Razzie, if you ask me. I'm sorry to say Dennis Ketcham was a case like Christopher Milne, where he grew up to resent the famous thing named for him. Not just because he had to endure DECADES of his father telling all of America what a bratty kid he once was, but apparently, Hank Ketcham had a wandering eye, if you know what I mean.

There is nowadays. The razzies have been heavily criticized for nominating underage actors for worst actor in recent years, which is why they now have chosen to only nominate adults.

This is my favorite channel for making me want to revisit childhood favorites. I would have been 9 or 10 when this movie released and I loved it then, but haven't rewatched it as an adult. I'm pretty surprised to hear that people didn't like the movie as I thought all the performances were great. This movie made me a huge Walter Matthau fan and I probably saw every movie he did after.

Being from the UK this may be sacrilege to say, but I never cared for Dennis & Gnasher at all. He was a bully, but this Dennis never had any real malice behind his actions. But I would regularly watch that Dic cartoon (which, yes, was also re-titled to simply 'Dennis') and yeah, I enjoyed the movie as a 10 year old kid. As a side note, wow, I never knew that was Phil Hartman voicing Mr Wilson!!

This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. Sure it’s not a masterpiece but I did grow up with it and I always associate it with me watching it with my grandparents. Speaking of which, I know that Mr. Wilson was just a neighbor of Dennis but I always got a sense of him being Dennis’ grandfather. That’s the vibe I always got.

I loved this movie as a kid and still enjoy it as an adult. It's not groundbreaking or anything but it's a fun movie with a great cast and I miss actors like Walter Matthau and that generation in general. They made better movies and didn't feel the need to put their politics above the entertainment.
@KairuHakubi

And even if they had challenged the audience that way (instead of just been entertaining) you KNOW they would have had DIFFERENT characters have different viewpoints, and just have fun with the clashing, not really taking sides. And we wouldn't have minded it as much, because nobody felt like the other side was actively destroying their lives (and half of us are right. and the other half is right to worry because we absolutely would). And when you feel safe, you're a lot happier to hear references to conflict.

Yup, bringing back the good ol' time of the 90s, when films and actors were still allowed to be simply funny and entertain people without any political undertones and not everything had to be overly politically correct. In the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s everything in entertainment just felt so much lighter and more innocent. Today, political correctness and woke cancel culture have ruined all creativity.

As a child when this came out, I never matched this as a competitor with Home Alone. Can't recall if I had heard of the Dennis the Menace comic strip, but the movie itself was great for what it was. As for your mention of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson feeling like a real couple, it certainly did for me! Even watching this video, I'm reminded of my grandparents, who even had similar names (George and Margaret rather than George and Martha). Something about the way the two of them played those roles that just made a child WANT to be near them! Oh, and now I've seen one of my own daughters have nearly an identical look that Dennis has in a couple scenes; it is truly frightening to see it as an adult!
