Keep it as original as possible. I acquired my father's 1968 2 + 2 a couple of years ago and I'm keeping it as original as possible also but modernizing it to the point that it's now a daily driver. A modern pertronix electronic ignition system, a modern fuel pump, alternator seems to be okay if it is a solid state voltage regulator Incorporated in it, and of course get it running and make sure the radiator is good. Probably needs to have a new core and the radiator so I would do that but make it a larger core like I did and you will never have a heating problem. I got rid of all the smog on mine and I disconnected the secondaries that are located in the intake manifold and remove the secondary throttle plates. I removed the original air cleaner assembly although I kept it but I installed foam air filters on the carburetors so they breathe better and allow more room to service the car. I also put on a modern spin on oil filter conversion which makes oil changes so much easier but kept the original canister. If you want to bump up the horsepower, you can put a 3 carburetor conversion on it or you can put a triple Weber carburetor conversion and maybe a header and a more Open Exhaust plus hotter camshafts. You could probably get pretty close to 300 horsepower doing that. I'm not a big fan of Ls conversions but that's just me. You have a matching numbers car presumably so it's best to keep it that way. Replace the thin cheap headliner with a nice headliner, as I did. I need to do my front seats and Center console armrest and you should probably do the same. Your rear seats look good. The rest of your interior seems to be fine so leave it as is. If the dash is cracked then replace it. My interior is almost literally perfect except for the seats and center console armrest. It may be difficult to match that green Connolly leather. Also remember the seats are leather on the sitting surface and vinyl on the back. I think Jaguar cheaped out a little bit there. Since the alternator is up top, you probably have air conditioning so you will want to refurbished that or get an aftermarket air conditioning system for about two grand. This car can nickel-and-dime you really really quickly so Choose Wisely as to your projects and you can have an amazing car.

A "Factory Original CJ" is almost an oxymoron. Very few CJ's were unmodified after the first year. The things were so easy to work on and aftermarket parts were widely available and cheap. Often times the aftermarket parts werent just cheaper, they were better. In the late 80's and 90's My 78 had a chrome valve cover because the AMC valve cover cost 3 times more. The only time I paid more for an aftermarket part was when I switched to a Center Force clutch (Anyone who's driven a CJ in stop and go traffic knows why, that 3 finger pressure plate was hard on the left leg) You could literally pull into a truck stop, buy a new rear tail light assembly ,because semis used the same one,( they still do) and swap out the smashed assembly in the parking lot in about 10 minutes. -I changed u-joints in a Dennys parking lot. -I dropped the oil pan at a campsite, pulled out the broken piston , then removed both rocker arms for that cylinder and drove 270 miles on 5 cylinders to get home. Then I rebuilt the engine for $235 in parts. -Had a head on collision with a Chevy pick-up on a fire trail. Bought a new "front end kit ( grill ,fenders , hood) for about $200 and had the radiator rebuilt ..it cost about $500 to get it back in running shape (the Chevy truck was totalled) Most CJ's were driven hard, repaired often and had the sheet metal replaced after the original body rusted away. My CJ was eventually sold to a 14 year old kid and his dad as a "restoration project". "The kid" lets his teenagers drive it now. It blows my mind that its 42 years old now.

Hi Dennis. Well my '66 2+2 has all the rust that all normal "e"types are renown for ! I think you know what to do, let someone else make the choices. Thanks Dennis to share a video of the Jag after cleaning it. If it's documented and truly so low mileage then I highly recommend to keep it original. There are still high mileage and tired 2+2s available which are more suitable for a V8 conversion...if you really want to do it vs. having a nice sounding powerful enough Jaguar XK-engine...just my 2 cents...

That jaguar has what I referred to as 57 syndrome. Everyone chopped the four-door 57 Chevy‘s into a two door. So same thing with the Jaguars everyone’s converting them to convertibles which makes that one a little harder to find. I would fix up the seats, replace the headliner, and get it running. Let the new owner enjoy it as a starter collector car.

Hey Dennis IMO keep it original and let the new owner take it from there. I’m a huge fan of the x type I used to hang around Gus Browns in Toronto and the owner Gus Sandusky does the most amazing restorations of x types as well as the engine work with Weber side draft carbs ( jag original carbs were inefficient) just an absolute first class garage with many accolades. Mr Sandusky is definitely a go to for trouble shooting. Great vlog all the best from🇨🇦

Thought the XK motor came with a Borg Warner trans. A mate had a s2 xj12, had a borg warner in it too. 77 xjs V12 used a th400 though. Shit vacuum kickdown modulator leaked atf into the manifold making huge white smoke clouds. Aussie holdens did same with their trimatics.

The E Types are worth considerably more with the original engine than ones with any kind of swapped engine. Now the XJ sedans not so much and people routinely put small blocks in them to improve the reliability if they want to drive them.

I'm sure I had added a similar comment before regarding a "Scrambler" concept I had of installing a standard jeep front and back seat arrangement and hard or soft top. Then fabricating a custom, removable (lockable) "trunk" behind the cab. ;-) I'm guessing the back seat isn't usable for even a 5'7" tall adult (leg room)? I'm sorry but the quarter panel (wing) of the Jag sounded too solid like it had filler (bondo, plastic, whatever) on it? Lucas Electrics, aka: "Prince of Darkness" (Positive Earth/Ground?). Do you know why the British drink warm beer? Lucas refrigerators. ;-D
