Thanks, I just bought a bike with straight pipes but the guy threw in an assortment of baffles he never used, so this is handy information. BTW loud pipes do not save lives, I like them "louder" than stock, but there is no excuse for being obnoxious to the rest of the world.

For me, its not about getting quieter, it's about removing reversion and getting my Torque back. People weren't joking when they said some aftermarket exhaust changes your powerband. Sure my HP/Torque probably is same, but you REALLY feel it slack on the low-midrange RPM without Baffles. I popped one in my bike and boom, she rode smoother than ever and got a richer tone.

"Loud pipes save lives" is just a phrase regurgitated by many riders who dont necessarily think for themselves. Loud pipes can be fun , but on any ride more than a few miles the novelty soon wears off . Baffles are a great way to tone it down a bit . We dont always need the public attention focused on us while getting about on our machines aye.cheers

Thanks for posting. It is well worth the time to watch. Loud pipes don't save lives. Properly trained motorcycle riders, saves lives. Loud pipes are what is getting a lot of really good motorcycle riding roads, closed off to motorcycles throughout Europe. So technically, the term back pressure is wrong but also right! A small obstruction that does not increase back pressure will produce more torque and horsepower in mid and high rpm ranges on any 4 cycle engine. The Reason? Valve overlap. The rushing gases exiting the pipe keep the exhaust moving at high speed thus actually sucking more fuel and air into the motor with less spent air remaining in the cylinder. We have used lollypops many times in the past and welded simple washers into pipes to improve takeoff speed. Great for mid range power on the street. The great side effect is it runs both cooler and quieter when you want or need it to 🙂
@LowlyDegenerate Жыл бұрын
Thank. You. Back pressure is a byproduct produced by the bends and such in the exhaust system, which are needed to aid in exhaust gas scavenging as you said. Back pressure isn't a "needed" thing like we've heard from so many people over the years. It's just an unavoidable byproduct of any exhaust system because physics is a thing that exists. You ideally want an exhaust that scavenges the most gas with the least amount of back pressure possible at whatever rpm range you need

@LowlyDegenerate Жыл бұрын
You're technically not wrong. Basically a baffle is a muffler, just without a case. All three of the designs show here are pretty much what glasspack mufflers for cars have looked like in the inside throughout the years. The last one with louvers inside is very old school, like 50's and 60's style, while the one with fiberglass around it is essentially the same design as a straight through muffler you can buy today from Magnaflow or Borla. The middle one looks like the inside of a cheap homemade suppressor. While that design doesn't work very well for that application, it works pretty well for a muffler baffle insert

Back pressure never equals horsepower. Wny propagate myths?
@DennisKirk3 жыл бұрын
a little back pressure is a good thing. The right size pipe is large enough to breathe well but small enough to create a high exhaust flow. Steps in the exhaust system also create negative pressure waves that travel back to the cylinder and help empty the cylinder of those gases.
