Hi You two! Could you tell me how long the drive is to Hanauma Bay from Hilton Hawaiian Village?

I’m 40 and can remember going to Hanauma Bay and just spending a day snorkeling. No cost, no hassle, no crowds.

Yep, I'm 46 and we went in '85. We parked right on site and spent the day there snorkeling. I don't remember it being crowded at all.

Thanks for sharing the no parking at Hanauma Bay. How about Lanikai beach for snorkling. Is it easy to find parking or any 1st come basis designated parking?
@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
You could snorkel at Lanikai, there is a reef there. But it's also on the (windy) windward side, so the visibility isn't great. And oh man.. parking at Lanikai is difficult. It's a neighborhood area, and most parking spots are for the residents. Come early!

We used to spear fishing at Hanauma Bay in the old days. The water was clear and clean. The last time I was at Hanauma Bay some years ago, it was a fish sanctuary, but the water was murky.
@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
Wow spear fishing? Cool that you were able to do that! Hanauma bay sure has changed over the years.

Hello Denny &Nikkie, Thanks for replying. Hmm, if that's the case looks like Kailua maybe better for public parking right? Isn't it from there to SIM or snorkle my way, it will take 15-20 mins to Popoia Island. However, If I decided to Kayak, Lanika beach will be better. What do you think the estimate time 1 way to kayak to Popoia Island without getting lost(lol).
@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
From Lanikai beach, it would take around 30 minutes to get to Flat Island. It's probably better to kayak to Popoia from Kailua. Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands is better from Lanikai. I hope that helps!

Visiting Oahu is pretty frustrating - the reservation process for Hanauma Bay filled up within 3-4 minutes every morning, couldn't get into Pearl Harbor either, glad we paid tens of thousands of dollars and took 11+ hours for family to fly in - not tourist friendly IMO...
@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
I can definitely understand where you are coming from! It's expensive and difficult to get many of the reservations on the island now.

We will be visiting in a little less than a month. Do you recommend renting snorkeling equipment(if that's possible), buying when we arrive in Oahu, or bringing with us in our luggage?

We would just buy a set when arriving on Oahu. They aren’t that expensive :). Not sure if they rent those out now, with the covid restrictions in place.

@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
I think it just changed to $25 per person. If you are a resident of Hawaii, it's free.

@@DennyandNikki so $25 to enter the bay. Do you have to pay the $44 snorkeling fee that I see on the website? it's so confusing. and you do recommend that we buy our own gear right?
@retirednavy87202 жыл бұрын
I was stationed in Pearl Harbor for 3 years. Hanauma Bay has a lot of fish but is too "touristy." There is better snorkeling and diving on the other side of the island especially off of Kaena Point.

Why did you have to wait an hour and a half? Was it because of how many people were in line?
@DennyandNikki3 жыл бұрын
Yes! It was pretty disorganized, now they have a different system. You can reserve your parking spot online, instead of waiting outside. We waited so long, because they let a few people in, then a few cars, then people and so forth.

If you enjoy snorkeling, Hanauma Bay is definitely worth the visit after the break in tourists. Maybe try out Kaiona Beach park in Waimanalo if the weather is nice The waves can be insane on china walls this time of the year though, so maybe wait until summer for that one.
