Hay Ealan, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to shoot this vid. I took receipt of the Denon A-110 roughly 8 weeks back. I had been having issues attempting to properly set up the 7.1.6 After watching your video, I now understand the required path to take to tell the amp I wanna use two mono blocks for my main L/R fronts. After weeks of pulling my hair out (and there is not much of that left at my age) I finally get it. The A-110 is a full onboard 13.2 capable AVR but my main fronts are rated at 300W and the Denon can only reach half that, so I picked up a set of QUAD mono's with a max out of 500W. Finally I get to appreciate the capabilities of the B&W's I own. Thanks again. Yours Kevin from Glasgow/Scotland/UK

Mission accomplished. The external amp is working (LCR channels). Later I'll check to see if those (3) internal amps are truly turned off. But for now, I'm overjoyed knowing the 3-channel ext. amp is in line, getting a signal and working. Did a quick pink noise test and while the LCR remained at the same volume level, I was able to lower the gain on about 5 of the remaining 8 channels a bit and still reach my target decibel level at the main listening area. That suggests more power is being distributed to those channels from the AVR. Based on that point alone, there has been an improvement. (Tears of happiness 😊). Thanks again for your response Ealan!

James, I have the same speaker/amp assign setup issue with my Denon AVR-X8500H with a 5 channel external amp. You say that you solved the config issue. Are you able to post the successful settings that you used? Did you the custom setting?
@jamesmiller2317 Жыл бұрын
@Ian Taylor Yes, I used the custom setting (Assign Mode). My apologies for the slow response, but to be honest, I forgot to check the settings yesterday. I took a couple of photos of the settings if you think that would be helpful. (But, I would need an email to send them to.) The only issue I've had so far is that I've picked up a slight humm whit the external 3 channel amp in line. The humm is only in the LCR speakers. So now I need a ground wire between my receiver and the smp. Otherwise I'm still very pleased with everything.
@IanTaylor-xd9yp Жыл бұрын
@@jamesmiller2317 I have since tried the custom setting (Assign Mode) and set Front, Centre, Surround in the Speaker column to "None". This was automatically selected. (This covers the 5 channel external amp: Emotiva BasX A5), then Surround Back to "Surround Back", as per the terminal connection; Height 1 and Height 2 to "Front Dolby" and "Rear Dolby" respectively. This seems to work well. I don't get any hum in the speakers with this config. Is this a similar setup to what you have and have you solved the hum issue?
@jamesmiller2317 Жыл бұрын
@Ian Taylor Yes, that is the same custom settings I used. The only exception of course is "Surround" as I only have a (3) channel external amp (OSD Nero XA3200), not a (5) channel. To hear the humm, I have to literally place my ear a few inches from the tweeter/ horn. I tried using different electrical outlets at first, but the humm only went away with the ground wire (problem solved). Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with the quality and sound of the amp. To me, it definitely made an improvement and I'm glad I made the change. I'm hopeful you'll experience a noticeable difference and are satisfied with the added amp.

Let me join all others who have said it before me, thank you for this informative video. I recently bought an SR8015 (crazy liquidation prices) and found the speaker settings confusing as I have an EMOTIVA XPA-3 Gen 3 to drive my front L/C/R speakers and use the Marantz for the rest. I wanted to assign my front L & R to the pre outs. I couldn’t figure how to do it! I have a 5.1.4 system with my 4 height speakers installed in ceiling in a TF & TM configuration. TM because the middle heights are right above our heads. The only way I could figure out to set the in ceiling above our heads as TM was to set the front in ceiling as Front Heights (instead of Top Front). Setting the front height as TF only allows TR for the in ceiling above our heads. My question… will there be a significant difference in sound using FH & TM vs TF & TR in my settings? FYI, the Marantz SR8015 replaces a Sony STR-AZ5000ES which suffered from an annoying hiss when using 360SSM. Sadly as Sony has the lead when it comes to acoustic processing. But the Marantz has a warmer sweeter sound which I really love.
@ealanosborne8 ай бұрын
FH vs TF etc won’t affect the sound itself for better or worse. It’s more of a placeholder or preliminary setting. The more important factor is running Audyssey room correction, because that will get the timing and levels right, no matter where the speakers happen to be. Also to note, Auro 3D setups aren’t supported when you choose “top front” or “top rear.” But it will be supported when you choose “front height” and “rear height.” Not sure if you care about Auro 3D, but just thought I’d mention that too. 😁

@ealanosborne2 жыл бұрын
No, you’re not missing anything. Typically you’ll only use “top middle” if you have only 2 ceiling speakers you’re dealing with. Or if your AVR can support 6 height channels. Otherwise - regardless of placement - 4 ceiling speakers would still be considered top front and top rear. Although there is “SHL” and SHR” in the software for side-mounted height speakers, which you could experiment with. But my guess is it won’t make much of a difference, since in the end, running Audyssey will account for how far away the speakers are from the main listening position anyway. 🤘

Hi great video question please if you don’t mind. I also have two Klipsch RP-600m bookshelf speakers on stands as the rear and I’m using the tv as the center channel until I get dedicated center speaker, there is a 10 inch woofer as well. Now the entire setup uses hard wired connections and I just bought two Denon 150 home wireless speakers and I would like to use them as rear height speakers to make it a 7.1 but so far I’m not seeing a way in the Denon setup to add two wireless speakers it only gives options for connecting more wired speakers. So is it possible to do this? Thank you so much
@ealanosborne2 жыл бұрын
Ah…looking at the specs online, it looks like the 150 wireless speakers aren’t designed to be integrated into a traditional wired home theater system. It can be a part of a whole house audio system for music streaming through HEOS technology, but that’s not the same. And the 150’s can be used as rear surrounds for the DHT-S716H sound bar, but not in a wired system. Just runs off different technology. Would be pretty awesome if it could be used within a traditional home theater, but the technology just isn’t there…yet? 🤷♂️

Hi. Great video. I just bought the Denon AVRX4700H. In the manual I don't see a connection configuration that will represent the speakers I have to connect to it. There will 5 floor speakers (FR, FL, C, SR, SL) plus 2 Dolby enabled FHR, FHL (assume connect to Height 1) but I also want to Bi-Amp the Front Klipsch 8060's, and would like to use the Height 2 connections for that. The manual shows a 7.1 channel:Bi-Amp Connection of Front Speakers in the manual, but in that configuration they show an SBR and SBL which I do not have. Is there a way to fix that with the Speaker Config. settings? Or when I hook all the speaker wires and run Audyssey, will it figure out the correct configuration to ASSIGN? Thank you in advance for any replies.
@ealanosborne10 ай бұрын
If I have it correct, you’re wanting to set up a 5.x.2 system, right? The software only allows for Bi-amping using the SBR and SBL speaker terminals, which is great, since you aren’t using surround back speakers at all. So you would connect the hi frequencies of your 8060’s to the front L/R speaker terminals, then connect the low frequencies to the SBR/SBL terminals. 🙌 Make sense?

That’s definitely possible. And at the start, don’t worry about which speakers your using for height channels, as long as it sounds good to you. 😃 As long as you use the 11.1 software assignment, set Floor to 5CH + SB, and set the Pre Out to Front, you can power your 5 bed layer speakers with the A5, and power the rest of your speakers with the internal amps of your x4700h. 👍

@@gregoryotoole41 Oh, right. Gotcha. Yeah, it’s a weird little quirk with Denon AVRs (at least from a few years ago). You still need to choose 4 height speakers to engage the pre outs, yes. Hey Ealan! Great, great, great video btw! Excellent content and instructions. I have a Denon 4700h with a 5.1.2 speaker setup (the .2 was literally setup yesterday). I’m starting to get the feeling my speaker connections may be wrong. I have 4 satellite speakers - 2 front at the top of the wall pointing down to my listening position, 2 rear top of the wall pointing down and now 2 in ceiling directly above my position (of course the center and sub - not worried about those). The 2 fronts are connected to the AVR’s FRONT R/L, center to the CENTER, 2 rears to the SURROUND R/L and the 2 ceiling HEIGHT1 R/L. Can you advise if this is okay and if not, what changes would you make? No, sorry. 7 channel AVRs can only process 7 channels of audio (and up to 2 subwoofers). It’s only once you upgrade to the 9 channel tier that you’ll find AVRs that contain 9 internal amps, but can process a total of 11 channels with the help of an external amp (like the Denon X3700H). Not sure why manufacturers decided to do that to 7 channel AVRs, but that’s the way it is. 🤷♂️

Following you video, I noticed in the Denon setup that you can only select to power either the front or the ceiling speaker but not both.
@ealanosborne3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the compliment! And yes, that is a software limitation of the X4700H, either assigning the front 2 speakers OR rear height speakers to be powered externally. I honestly wish you COULD mix and match to your heart’s content, but no. Although if it’s in your budget to get a BasX A4 as well, then you could put it in Preamp mode and power all speakers externally. But until you can do that, I would power all your bed layer speakers with the A7 anyway and let the Denon power the height channels. Depending on the content, the height channels will most likely be activated only sporadically and more subtly. So having your 7 bed layer speakers externally amped is a better way to go in the meantime. 👍

I have purchased a 3-channel external amp that I want to add for my LCR channels. I've been through every Speaker/Amp Assign option and I can't find any setting showing a "Pre-Out" option for the left and right main. And none of the "View Terminal Config." diagrams show the left / right front connections highlighted in the "Pre Out" section Am I to assume pre-out is always there/on for the LCR channels? This is frustrating, it's my second day trying to figure this out (and I can't find the hard copy manual, to see if it would help) Any suggestions?
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
Yes, in theory, the pre outs should just always be “on” when you connect an RCA cable to it, since you are interrupting the audio signal before it hits the internal amp. Have you tried the Custom amp assign mode? I wonder if that could help with assigning the fronts to be powered by an external amp? I wish I was more familiar with that beast of an AVR, but it’s definitely more customizable than its less expensive counterparts.

Ealan, outstanding video! If I want 7.1.4 and go with the x6700h, is there any reason to set up an external amp at this point? Today I have 7.1 and purchasing the x6700h to get me to 4 ceiling Atmos set up. I guess I'm not sure how to take into account the watt specs of my speakers to determine when to get a 2 or 3 channel external amp.
@ealanosborne2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Well, it’s just a step in the evolution of your home theater, really. Since the x6700h has a rating of 140 watts per channel (2 channels driven), so probably more like 90 watts per channel when everything is working simultaneously. So if you have speakers that work best around 100-125 watts per channel, using the internal amps should be fine for awhile. But it does make a difference to start with the front three speakers (left, center, right) being powered externally. It allows the Denon to process audio better when there are less speakers to power on its own. More details come out, dynamics are more dramatic (loud parts are louder, quiet parts are more intelligible), etc. But honestly, it’s not exactly worth it until you get more expensive speakers that need more power to really come alive. Like speakers that can handle 150-300 watts (or more!). Then you can get some external amps that can supply that kind of power to really let the speakers sing! Make sense? 😁

In amp assign, Floor should be set to 5 Ch + SB to activate the preout assignment. Choose 4 height channels (and choose either "front" or "top", depending on if you have mounted or in-ceiling speakers) and choose Front for the preout assignment. Go back to the Speaker Config page and make sure the diagram looks like your setup. The physical RCA cable connections is pretty simple - just plug in to Front Left, Front Right and connect those to your XPA Two amp. Center, Surround Left, and Surround Right preouts get connected to the BasX A3. And that should do it! The only preouts you have to assign are Front Left and Front Right. Center, Surround Left, and Surround Right don't need to be assigned, they're just ready for a signal if an RCA cable is connected to its corresponding preout.

So Gene at Audioholics is telling me the Denon amp has the ability to turn OFF the internal amplification, but in your example the Denon amp is still on!? Correct? You said it yourself, bypass. Not turn it off. So the AVR is still doing all the amplification, it's just not hooked up & driving the speakers. What am I accomplishing?
@ealanosborne2 жыл бұрын
Yes, with the 2020 and newer models, there is “preamp” mode, which shuts off all internal amps, if you happen to power all your speakers externally. Otherwise - say if you’re using a 3-channel amp to power your front soundstage - any signal that doesn’t reach the internal amp (because it’s going out the pre out first) doesn’t activate its corresponding internal amp.

There’s no way to specify a 5.1.4 with surround backs. If you happen to have your surrounds behind you in a 5.1.4 configuration, they would still be considered surrounds since you don’t have 7 ear-level speakers. It’s just a matter of labeling and identifying speakers. But in the software, you would still just use 5 floor speakers in the amp assign section, and in speaker Config you would still have 2 surrounds, and “none” for surround backs, even though they are physically in the surround back position. Make sense? 😀

@@ealanosborne Thank you for the quick response. That makes perfect sense, and I was able to define all my speakers. I am moving from a 5.1 system with some new speakers and this new Denon receiver. I would have been lost without your help.
