Bought the denon after a week of side by side with a Cambridge ax100. Smooth weighty but still clear at the top. The Cambridge was a bit cold and fatiguing. Great review , thank you.

You've come a long way in your presenting since this video, Randy! 🙂I'm running a PMA510AE at the moment but thinking of an upgrade and this one is the front runner. Just picked up an ifi Zen Phono and your recommendation there was on the money: what an improvement in my vinyl listening! Keep up the good work... Arabest, from Scotland 🙂

Currently one of the best value amps on the world market, period. Great Bluetooth, a full weighty sound with all inputs and classic styling. I love the bass on the Denon again full and with a nice heavy slam., mids are great, full vocals and nice smooth highs. I have tried a few amps from different mid market brands and always, I repeat, always come back to Denon. My most recent comparison was with the Iota VX SA3 and while that is a nice amp too and very well built, I came back to my Denon PMA600NE and settled there. The 600ne has more weight in the bass and much better vocal and mid range over the SA3. The Denon drives my Monitor Bronze 200 speakers very well and are well suited to each other. The Monitor Audio Bronze 200 can reach as low as 35hrz with dual 5.25 inch cones so the Denon pma600ne puts some low end goodness through those with fluid partnership. My first silver amp too...usually I go for black but with my failing eyesight the silver is easier to read primarily but it's also a little more elegant cosmetically than the black version imo.

It would be FANTASTIC if you could review the NR1200 and then compare it to the Denon PMA600NE and of course, the Marantz NR1711 for those wondering if Marantz's 2-channel offering is BETTER in stereo. Also, how good is the built-in streamer? Happy Holidays!

I've just got one of these, matched with a pair of Elac DBR62 speakers, and what a combination. I'm sure that Denon has under-stated the power output, I listen around 80-85dB, and no sign of the amp strugglin when driven hard. On some of my test tracks, the tom tom hits are huge. Muscular is probably the best description. Phone stage is pretty good, and the headphone output is 90% of my JDS Element 2

Maybe because the companies tend to give more honest power ratings with stereo amps than surround receivers. When you see a well known receiver from, say Sony, and it boasts "175 Watts x 7" it is deliberately misleading. They are giving you a specious rating, which they might call "dynamic" power. Basically means driving one channel and using a midrange test tone at 1 khz (midrange frequency that any amp can perform easily) and when it spikes at about 80- 90 Watts for a few milliseconds, calling it 100 Watts. They really mean 175 divided by 7. Which would come to 25 watts RMS at most. So with that more truthful rating, the 40 Watts of this Denon 600ne is actually plenty of power. NAD too will give a 40 watt x 2 rating for their stereo amps which sounds wimpy.But they will also explain that the dynamic power of the same amp is over 100 Watts, which sounds good.

Ultimately I didn’t keep this amp , if you can stretch to a Rotel tribute which is not a lot more money , the Rotel is a keeper for me , wow it literally wipes the floor with the Denon in my opinion , in fact if we are talking about best amp under £1000 the ROTEL is a lot closer to that than the Denon , I’d say it’s twice as good , everything about it sounds so much nicer , space , detail , warmth - I love this amp. It’s a Ken special edition and it’s a beauty , it’s not got digital connections though other than Bluetooth. But add a good Dac and I can honestly say the search is over. I’m using with wharfedale speakers.

It's strange, because many people rave about this Rotel amp but I bought one and didn't get on with it at all. At first I thought it was faulty: with the volume set to 30 it was hardly making any sound. I called Sevenoaks and they said that was normal with a digital volume control. Gave it about 12 hours playing time and all the while it sounded flat and lifeless. Didn't have more patience with it as I don't really believe in night and day burn in with amplifiers, with speakers maybe, but not amps.

@@robertmarshall7712 Yeah. I've read a lot of good things about the Tribute amp, regarding sound. However, there seems to be a fairly common opinion that the Tribute amp is a bit anemic in the power supply. Was that your experience as well? Now I wonder, if this Denon has a better, more powerful power supply. Anyone??? Another question regarding this Denon pma-600ne: does it have a full bodied, warmer sound?

I've been considering this for awhile now, once you mentioned it works well with s&m that may have convinced me. I listen to a wide range of music types, genre's, whatever, but I usually use a couple s&m tracks as well as 'one' (original version and remastered) as like reference songs to see what something sounds like. If it can handle these tracks cranked up to 11 then I'm pretty sure everything else will work fine on it. Also nice to know that it works with the unifi, that will hopefully translate to giving the cheap Maggie's a try on this amp later too?? Thanks again and keep up the good work!

@@cheapaudioman after seeing your emotiva vid now I'm leaning towards that instead. I'm thinking about a bluetooth ldac like the fiio bta30 and the regular power amp from emotiva, hoping I can use the fiio as a preamp, or atleast a volume control. I think I'll just grab the fiio and mess with it a bit and see if it works the way I'd like it to. It has an app and will function as a bt reciever or transmitter, or a dac. Honestly I really don't know exactly what I want, except just to have some fun and see where this goes. I haven't bought any electronics since my onkyo reciever about 6 years ago now, so much to choose from now!

@@Brian_Romska yeah. Good time to be in this hobby. The TA-100 also has preouts so you could hook up any power amp later. The emotiva takes a bit to get used to if you mess with tone controls but after a few times I got it all sorted. Your way would work well too. It’s also pretty powerful on its own. I’ll probably end up getting another amp to hook up to it down the road. Something maybe with a bit of a different signature.

First of all huge thanks for such an informative video. A small question though. The idea of pairing toping D50s to the denon seems appealing but that only works when you have one source right? Is it possible to connect multiple sources (like streamer and cd player) through the D50s to my denon pma-600ne and switch between them? Because I wanna be able to use the goodness of an external dac for all my digital sources.

Great review - I fully concur. Judging by price, the PMA-600NE is the weakest link in my system, but I don't care...my system sounds so good, there's nothing I wanna change, which is a testament to how good this amp is. When I listen to rave amp reviews, I’m like ‘yeah gotta get that amp’, then I listen to my system and I lose all interest in new gear. My other components are: Kef LS50, Rel T7i, and RME ADI-2 FS with a Mac as my source. I’m listening near-field in a tiny 8x10 feet room with no echo/reflections. BTW, it was only since adding the Rel that my GAS disappeared...before the Rel I was disappointed with my system and kept searching. The only thing I’m interested in now are tubes for a different more holographic sound, but I’m not in any hurry.
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 жыл бұрын
Please tell me something about the LS50. I felt like it had zero bass. The guy I sold them to said they had zero bass. I see reviews of them never mentioning this. Do yours have bass? I'm assuming since the REL stopped your journey that this may be a true statement?
@GodfreyMann
@GodfreyMann 3 жыл бұрын
@@cheapaudioman The LS50 doesn’t have slam, but that’s not what I’m after. It’s not that the LS50 doesn’t have bass - I think it does, for example, when I listen to Macy Gray’s ‘Annabelle’ from the album Stripped, it reaches down and does a good job at playing the bass notes (considering it’s a small box). The problem is it lacks richness/fullness and depth not just with bass instruments but with every instrument, even her voice and the room! ‘Annabelle’ was recorded live in a church and although you can hear the room on the LS50, it’s not very pronounced, but as soon as I switch on my T7i wow the height and volume of the room expands making it more ‘real’. Instruments can also change their imaging and depth for example with the drum solo (snare drum?) in Metallica’s ‘One’ from S&M2 between 40 secs and 1 min 50. On the LS50 it sounds distant and thin, but with my T7i, it moves forward in depth in the soundstage and has a richer/fuller more satisfying sound. The decay is short on the LS50 and the sub fills it out satisfyingly. The soundstage on the LS50 is good, but with my T7i it becomes bigger e.g. with the title track from ‘A Fist Full of Dollars’ it also becomes richer/fuller almost holographic especially the whistling. The difference is with extended bass the soundstage goes from good to amazing. Finally, instruments change their character with the T7i, for example, the cello in ‘Courante’ from Janos Starker’s 1963 recording of Bach’s Suite no. 1 for Solo Cello. On the LS50 it sounds okay, but the cello doesn’t have that satisfying big instrument sound with deep growling voice. But with the T7i, wow, the whole presentation changes...the cello puts on more girth, digs deeper and I can hear more of the room. So, what I was missing with the LS50 was richness, weight and character in every instrument (some more than others), which are related to bass, but it wasn’t bass notes that I was missing. With the T7i I get all that plus the clarity/detail and imaging that the LS50 is known for. The combination is so much more...audiophile.

@@cheapaudioman I've just been listening to Barley Fields by Von Meyer - it's a bass heavy track with an interesting soundstage. It plays great on my LS50s without my sub with an inexpensive Audio Vista Spark II. The bass sounds tight, fast, responsive and extended. It's enough for me....nothing missing from the presentation. However, with the sub the bass becomes richer, fuller, warmer, more visceral and the soundstage just expands and has more depth. Big difference, but the LS50 presentation is pretty good. By the way, the Audio Vista Spark II is worth you checking out as it's around the same price as the PMA-600NE (I paid around £325 inc. all taxes and delivery), but is a way better amp but has no features (no remote, no tone control, and only 25W per channel).

Ordered the PMA600NE today on the strength of this review and that of Steve Guttenberg. I've had the PMA700 & PMA710 in the past and always enjoyed the Denon sound , perhaps not the last word in detail but they were very enjoyable to listen to - kind of smooth and exciting / non tiring sound. Best integrated heard up to 1000 is a bold statement depending how many heard , anyway here's hoping. I know i could have spent more but I've got a positive feeling about this at 329GBP - why spend more?? , I'll post back for an update. I'll be pairing with some Cyrus One Linear Speakers - will see how that matches up , thanks for the review cheapaudioman.

Shane , I’ve never heard a Sansui so I can’t comment on that at all. I’d imagine the Denon would sound considerably better but you only know that by hearing the two. The phono stage on the Denon is probably like their previous amps pma700 etc and decent though I know for sure that a dedicated phono stage attached to the Denon will raise the bar quite a lot. I’ve had Tisbury and Rotel phono stages plugged into Denon amps and they sound on another level to the inbuilt stage but you have to factor in another £100 -£150 for this. It’s the old story of the better the source in the better the sound out. Speaker matching also plays an important part . Best A

Does the amp wattage absolutely need to be double the wattage of the each speaker for optimum performance? Like 240watt amp for a pair of 120watt speakers? or, will it cause damage the gear down the line? Is it absolutely necessary to get the numbers right? Thanks for any answers in advance. 👍

Andrew So here’s my update , speaker matching the denon sounds great with some kef q300 , I’m not sure it sounds particularly better than some of the previous denon models but that’s not a criticism because the denon integrated amps are very good generally. I’d say the Dac is a little disappointing and if you have a good Dac you can already use with this then that will improve things , if you have good sources to connect straight into analogue bypass again will sound very lively / good detail / well balanced . I’ve not used the phono stage but typically with denons I’ve used in the past , it will be acceptable but a dedicated stage £100 plus will sound much improved. I’d say overall the Denon pma600 is very good if you can pick one up around £300-£350 it’s probably up there as a superb option and if you like the denon sound, it’s very enjoyable . The next significant step up would be an audiolab 6000a. To say the Denon is described as potentially a best amp under £1000 , for me that’s a step too far but partner with good speakers and sources and it’s very, very good. If aesthetics are important then I would say it’s looking a little dated , using the same casing denon has been using for a number of years , no display - a little bit plasticky and bulky looking in black - maybe silver looks nicer .

My question is 2 fold , # 1 the plastic grill that covers part of the metal grill on the 600 , -- is it removable without causing damage to the unit and why or what purpose does it serve ?? # 2 do you personally feel 45 W's per side is enough power to comfortably drive the R51M speakers ? Thank you for your review , and I have subscribed !! Enjoying your videos , go grab a coffee !! Take care , Dreamer 

The DAC takes either an optical (spdif) or coaxial (spdif) from a device such as your tv, computer, or cd player and translates the digital info into analog info internally. If you hook up a cd player via the rca inputs on the back then the cd player is doing the digital to analog conversion. You can bring in high res music through the digital inputs on this device. I hope this helps.

I had the Sony dh190 before the Denon pma 600n and what can I say is that the sony was pretty powerful, (not 2x100w for sure) and detailed, the bass was awfull out of the Sony. It s only boomy and no body to it. The Denon on the other hand it s powerfull and the bass is there with a punch. The sount is warm. Although after 6 months the combination with Monitor Audio bronze2 got a little on the bright side when listening to rock. Maybe the speakers are like that. Don t know what happened. So don t bother with the Sony. The Denon is on the other league. Though I regret not buying the 800ne when there was only 50 bucks in between. It's pretty good. Not as good as the emotiva but good enough to get you by until you want to buy something a bit better. Hi Jason , I didn’t say the denon was better , I said better value at maybe half the cost of arcam. I owned the SA10 for about 3 months and sold it on. The Dac section is higher quality with the arcam for sure using a sabre Dac. Digital sources will sound better , a decent analogue source into the denon is not so far off though , I put that that to the test . Also with wharfdale reva speakers I found the SA10 quite flat sounding and a little dull. The guy that bought my SA10 was also not that impressed and even got arcam to check it , they fully tested and reported back it was working fine but he swapped it out for an audiolab in the end. I’ve been told the sa20 is better . Actually I’m quite a fan or arcam in fact I use an arcam avr350 for stereo now , this wipes the floor with the SA10 in my opinion although to be fair this was a receiver that was several thousand in its day. Anyway maybe the SA10 is better with certain speakers but I found it rather disappointing and although it may be a little better than the denon potentially with the right matching equipment or as a digital amplifier , I didn’t find it to be twice as good as the denon on analogue sources or with a good quality CD player attached - have to say I found the denon more fun in that regard . I know arcam was taken over by Harman kardon recently , the SA10 not up to some of their previous highly regarded models like the FMJ and the Diva ranges before.

I got her a used NAD 3020 and boom, match perfect. I have not heard the audiobabs 6000 but I have been told its good. And just to clear the better is the sa20. I have that on a set of KEF R3's Its awesome. But I do agree for 450 the denon is great. I have not tried the Cambridge for 349. That is tempting but I have enough gear right now. :)

Yo Randy, I watch your videos religiously. My favorite reviews for sure. Denon pma 600ne paired with Sony Ss cs5. What's your thoughts on that pairing? I know you like both

Good day. I have a Denon PMA 720, DNP 730 and DCD 520. I play via a Q Acoustic 3020 plus a Q Acoustic 3060S subwoofer. Would I get better sound by buying Denon PMA 600 NE? I listen mainly from NAS in FLAC format, sometimes Spotify and original CDs, genre hard rock and metal, room 20 m square, Thanks Milan

Looks like you have a good system already. If you want something of a different flavor or improved sound quality I would probably look at a different speaker. Not saying the Q’s are bad just saying it may be more cost effective than a new amp and then you could have a bit of a different “flavor” with two different high value bookshelf speakers. I don’t have direct experience with the 720 so I wouldn’t be able to comment. If you are looking to another integrated amp I’d also suggest the Emotiva TA-100 as it has preamp outputs and you could add an external amp later down the line to improve the sound even better.
