Pulled the Marti report on a 79 4x4 F150 Supercab I recently bought to restore. Bought it from the son of the original owner who said his dad special ordered it. Came with a 400-2v Engine, Ranger Package, Heavy Duty Towing Package/Trailer Special, and 4:11 gears along with other options. Love the Tool Box and Tie down hooks on the bed. Just off back surgery, so will be a few months before I can get started, so for now your videos keep me motivated. Thanks

My fathers ‘77 F250 4x4 Crewcab had the short box alright, I hadn’t realized you could only get the short box on a Crewcab. I guess the crewcab long box trucks I remember seeing were pre 1973 bump side models. One interesting note, my father’s truck had a Winnebago brand truck cap on it complete with the Winnebago logo on both sides and it had come from the dealer with that cap. To this day I have never seen another Winnebago brand truck cap.

Since they were so largely made to be work trucks, i don't know why people preferred short beds. Your lumber would hang out. A sheet of drywall and plywood is 4'x8', same size as in bed between wheel wells and length of the bed. Longbed holds a toolbox and still gives the short bed amount of usable bed... The list keeps going

Great video as always! Was the lack of the 460 for emission/fuel consumption reasons in the larger trucks?
@1971_Chevelle_SS4 ай бұрын
My bet is clearance issues, a 460 in a Bronco or F150 4x4 fits with not much room for the power steering box and hoses. The box mounts on the outside of the frame. The F250 steering box mounts inside the frame, so there’s not really enough room left.

In 1975, I went to buy a new 3/4 ton, 4x4 with a camper package. Ford would not give me both. A 1975 ford F-250, 4x4, XLT package, 360 2bbl, sliding rear window, locking hubs was $7,800. Yet you said a 1979 was $6,700? The price went down! Don’t think so. Up til buying my truck, all I had weee fords. But ford wouldn’t give me what I wanted. No 4bbl, no camper package AND 4wheel drive, no factory tie downs. Chevy was lower in height, factory tie downs plus stabilizers (shocks from top back of fender to camper), 4bbl, sliding rear window, bigger alternator and radiator, dual batteries, fuel tank skid plate, Cheyenne Super pkg for $6,300. The most overloaded pickup I ever saw was a 1997 F-150 with 4 tractor trailer axles with brake drums. He came into the scrapyard twice loaded like that. I told him he was nuts. He told me, he paid $100 for the truck and he was going to get his money’s worth.

Very cool, yes those truck were available as short beds and the 460s. Ford only offered the 460 in the 2wd trucks and the supercabs as shortbeds were only available as 2wd. A 4wd shortbed would have required Ford to manufacture another frame for what they probably deemed as not a hot seller.

I seem to remember a 1979 F350 4x4 short bead. When the 1979 F150 came out it was unleaded gas. But the F350 was still running on regular gas. One of the truck magazines noted that and did a feature article on a F350 4X4 shortbread. It’s been a long time so I may have remembered wrong, but I remember wanting one of those real bad! I had two 78 models. My new 78 was a F150 Ranger. 302 with automatic was not good enough. I sold it and later bought a plain 78 with a 300 straight 6 , manual transmission with floor shift. Not sure if they called it a 4 speed or not. The 4th gear was overdrive. It was a fun truck to drive.

My neighbor who had worked at a Ford garage in the 70's told me all about ordering parts from Ford and modifying vehicles before customer take delivery. Engines, transmissions, axles and springs and air conditioning. So there are a lot of "factory" options that were actually dealer options.

anything can be changed after the fact. Dealer AC, cruise, and all the accessories were available over the counter for these trucks. The brochures even highlighted that this was possible to do.
